    WEDNESbAY MORNING ; 'MAY 7
CITY MD MIGHBOUNDINIILLIGINCI
The Care of the Wonaded--Let
Our Citizens do their Doty.
It was a humane act to send a sanitary
fleet to - Pittsburg Landing to bring to this
city the sick, suffering and wounded sol
diers left there after the battle of Shiloh,
and the self-sacrificing spirit of those who
, havelevoted their time and attention to
the care of the poor fellows at the Marine
Hospital and Infirmary is highlycommend
able and we are glad to know that under
kind treatment many of the sufferers are
rapidly convalescing.
But it is not fair that the burden should
fall on a few benevolent citizens. It is the
duty of every one who has the means to
contribute his share to the expenses of the
expedition and the maintenance and care
of the soldiers. It is, therefore, with sur
prise and regret that we learn that only
three wards in this city, and two in Alle
gheny, have returned any funds through
the collecting committees, and indeed we
know of only one other ward in which the
committee is at work. The entire cost of
the expedition and subsequent expendi
tuies will probably reach $6,000, of which
some $4,000 has been collected and dis
bursed. Of this amount $1,6.50 was from
the Board of Trade and $1,900 from the
Second Ward; while, as we have said,
some districts have not contributed one
cent.
_ .
Collectors were appointed in all the
wards, and they should at once set them
selves at work to perform the duty assign
ed them. The $2,000 additional must be
raised, and certainly it will not come heav
ily upon the eight districts yet to be heard
frogman proportion to the amount sub
scribed by the other wards. Indeed the
First Ward should furnish the whole
amount, or nearly so. It will require but
a small effort on the part of each, and we
hope ere long to hear of the required
amount being paid in to the committee.
Wester= Theologecial Seminary.
The closing eiercises of this institution
took place last week. At the close of the
• examination of the classes, Dr. Brown,
/ate President of Jefferson College, Chair
man of the Committee of the Board of
Directors, delivered an address to the stu
dents. It is represented as being very
able and appropriate. On Tuesday even
ing, the Rev. Dr. J. D. Smith, of Colum
bus, Ohio, delivered a discourse before the
Society of Inquiry—sUbject, The Law of
Progress in reference to the Knowledge of
Revealed Truth." On Wednesday even
ing, the closing addresses of the graduat
ing class were delivered, after which Dr.
Elliott distributed diplomas to the class of
thirty-three persons. The farewell address
was then delivered by Mr. D. Miller, after
which a copy of the Scriptures was pre
opted to each member of the class by
Rev. Dr. Paxton. It is stated five or six
of thi s ,„"biss have offered to go to the hen

The Philadelphia ..Presa.has the follow
ing: "We are reliably ;..itormed that the
prospects of an abunant p :.ach crop were
never so.Sattering as d
thus far during the
present season, and that, unless t`ome late
frost kills the fruit, by far the largeb't crop
ever grown in Eastern Maryland wii. be
gathered. One intelligent gentleman in.-
forms us that over one million of trees
have been planted this season on the pe
ninsula, embracing Delaware and the East
ern Shore of Maryland, occupying Over
ten thousand acres of land. The apple
erop, from present appearances, also
promises to be a very large one. There is
great trade in lands on the line of the Del
aware Peninsular Railroad. Large tra2ts
of land are being laid out for peach oreh

Relief Meeting.
The citizens of South Pittsburgh held a
meeting in the Public School House, on
Saturday evening, to take measures 11r
seeming immediate .relief for the families
of volunteers now in the field. The meet
ing was organized by calling W. H. Barker
to the chair, and appointing Sidney J.
Brauff Seeretary. After a free interchange
of opinion on the subject which called them
together, it was resolved that "The Bur
gess and Town Council be requested to
appropriate out of the money in. the.Bor
ougli Treasury as much us in their judg
ment they may deem proper for the imme
diate relief of the families of volunteers,
until such time as the county relief is
forthcoming; that the relief thus furnished
be pernianent, and that the amount be
collected off the county if possible; and
that we eondenin the language of Commis
sioner Collins in classing the wives and
daughters of our volunteers as 'other pau
pers.' " The meeting then adjourned.

Important Announcement,
An English paper of a late date an
nounces the joyous intelligence that
"Congress has abolished slavery in the
State of Columbia. and will, as soon as
the consent of the local legislatures can be
obtained, proceed to abolish it in the 'other
States." The American boy .who does
not know better than this should be fitted
with a dunce cap at once. Speaking of
boys reminds us that 'l'. L. Carnaghan, of
Federal street, near the Diamond, has
made a speciality of Boys' Clothing in
his business. The announcement will he
gladly received by many who have worn
Carnaghan'a clothing, as it always fits,
and is durably made out, din lest mate

New Novels,
Mrs. Henry Wood has just given to the
world another of her fine domestic stories,
entitled the "Heir to Ashley.'• It is writ
ten in her beet style and, from a brief ex
amination we believe it to be frilly equal to
"East Lynne" or any of her otherprodne
tions—it is certainly very readable and
entertaining. From the high reputation
of the author the hook must meet with an
immense sale, as it is a telling book in
every way.
"The old 3ndge, - or Life in a Colony . ' is
a humoroui book, consisting of a series of
short stories by .fudge Haliburton, author
of the Sam Slick series and other funny
books. The stories contained in this book
are brim full of the quaint humor of the
Judge and will well repay perusal.
Both the above are from the press of
Dick Fitzgerald and belong to their ex
cellent fifty cent series. They are for sale
by Henry Miner, Nos. 7 I aiid 73 Fifth
street, adjoining the Post office.
