After to-day the Counting Room of the
Pbit "will be found on the second floor of
the Post building, in the room recently
occupied by the Mercantile Agency. En

The editorial and mailing rooms are on

Not a Prisoner.
We yesterday had a brief conversation
with Lieutenant Whitten, of the Firstjaud
only) Nebraska regiment, who came from
Pittsburg Landing on the 22d ult. He
brought with him as a trophy one of
the huge, rough, unwieldy Bowie knives,
so commonly found with the rebels in the
Southwest,
_sent to a friend here by Dr.
William McClelland, formerly of thii
city. It was stated here that Dr. McC.,
(whkwas Surgeon of the First Nebraska)
had been taken prisoner at Pittsburg; but
Lieut. W. informs us this is an error. Dr.
Mee. was on the battle field and rendered
very flficient service to our wounded. He
hasunce - been promoted to the position of
Brigade Surgeon to General Thayer's bri
gade, consisting of one Illinois, two Ohio,
and the' fi rst Nebraska regiments, in Gen
eral Lew. Wallace's division. Lieutenant
Whitten returns to-day, having been here
on a brief visit to his parents in Lawrence
ville, who recently moved here from Union
town, Fayette county.
Troublesome.
Robert. Morris was arrested on Sunday,
for raising : a disturbance at the house of
Mr*. MeleFirk, in Herron's alley, Alleghe
ny. On the way to the lock-up, he es
eaped, but was. pursued and recaptured.
Just as he was being locked up, he as
saulted the officer, leaving him a black
eye: He was fined twenty dollars, yester
day, by. Mayor Drum, and in default sent
to jail for a few days. Josephine Bassett,
arrested. in McGirk's house, was sent to
jail for thirty days. Mrs. McGirk was
also arrested, but having children to at
tend to, was not kept in custody.
Aniiltliaiklrawmeager Railway.
-The citizens of Temperanceville, West
Pittsburgh and Monongahela boroughs,
held a public meeting at the aehool house
in West Pittsburgh, on Saturday evening
isisti'to take into consideration the pro
liriety of constructing a passenger railway
from this eiq to the borough of Temper
aneeville. The meeting . was largely at
tendediandeonsiderable interest was man
ifested in the project, the people apparent
ly determined to push the matter vigor
ously. Sundry committees were appoint
ed and the meeting adjourned until Sat
urday of next week. , There is no doubt
bni the improvement would pay well, as the
population of the district it passes through 1
is about 2,000.

the utmost system and regularity. Two
divisions were moved from the laver to
the front. to-day. The enemy's pickets
are m sight, but for a day or so there has
been no skirmish of any moment.
To-morrow General Halleek moves to
the front. With such an immense army
an advance is necessarily slow, and several
days must elapse before we reach Corinth.
All reports of the evacuation 44 . Corinth
are declared by General llalleck bosh.—
The enemy are intrenched, and the ', a uk
will he a deverateonc.
There have been occasional showers, but
to-day the weather is exceedingly warm.
From Gen. linneelem Army.
The Hiawatha, which reached Cairo on
Sunday morning, left Pittsburgh at 3
o'clock on Saturday morning. She re
ports that on Friday ten days' rations and
ammunition were issued, and a general ad-
Vance of the entire army was ordered
Thursday evening. The pickets of both
armies were so near that soldiers exchang
ed canteens. It was the opinion of offi
cers- that the fight would occur to-day.
The Gladiator, which, arrived about
noon, reports that eight hundred of Mor
ian's cavalry has crossed the river below
Savannah, and were advancing upon that
point. Reinforcements had been demand
ed, and Gen. Balled; sent thorn just be
fore the Gladiator left.
The Situation in Tennessee.
The Cincinnati Getzetie, of Monday. May
sth, says :
A mystery surrounds the news from
General lialleck's army. A dispatch on
Saturday told us that there was important
news, but it. had been suppressed. This
has since been repeated. The important
news is still "contraband. — Official dis
patches front Pittsburg Landing, of yes
terday, report the army in fine spirits, and
promise stirring news in two or three dap.
l'his is all calculated to excite the expec
tations of the people ; bat it is not satis
ilictory. it is diffieult to understand what
is to be gained by this extreme reticense;
especially as everybody knows our whole
army hits advanced. and that our front, is
only a few miles from the rebel lines at
Corinth. It' Beauregard is there, there
must be a battle within twenty-four hours,
and news published in the loyal States
could ant help him. It' he is not there,
advices of our advance would not aid him.
But although we are without definite
intelligence ou several points, there is still
enongh to enable us to arrive at conclu
sions, plausible, at least, with reference to
the general i;iiiiatiun at Corinth. In the
first place we are officially iii6wined that
General Pope had taken Bonneville. torn
. .
up several miles of railroad, and destroyed
twu bridges. Booneville is situated on
the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, directly
south of Corinth. General Mitchell, as is
known, has possession of the Memphis and
Charleston road east of Corinth. General
Wallace occupies Purdy, on the Mobile
and Ohio road, north of Corinth. The
only Outlet fir Beauregard then, is west,
over the Memphis and Charleston road.
Unless we have flanked him on that side,
he can escape toward the .Mississippi river;
and go either to Memphis,
Vicksburg. or
in the direction of New Orleans. If there
is anyway of escape open to him, this is
the only one. Supposing him to be at
Corinth, it is evident then that his position
is a most critical one, and that his defeat
will amount almost to annihilation. Situ
ated as hc would be, lie could not escape
from a victorious army. But is Beaure
gard at Corinth? There is every reason
to believe that General Ifalleck is of opin
ion that he is not only there, but that he
means to stand; and it is also known that
ho intends to attack the rebels as soon as
possible.
It is also known that he anticipates a
desperate battle. • This ought to be con
clusive as to the whereabouts and purpose
of the enemy. But the rebels have so of
ten deceived our Generals, and have unu
sually succeeded so well in concealing
from our side their movements, that the
evidence upon which Gen. Halleck is oe3
crating cannot be regarded as reliable.—
Besides, the rebel papers for some days
have reported that Corinth was being evac
uated. In addition, officers that left our
army on Friday morning believed that the
work of evacuation was then progressing;
and still further, it is hardly probable,
knowing as he undoubtedly does, the
strength of our army—and situated as he is,
that Beauregard would risk a battle at
Corinth. It is our impression, therefore,
from all the light we have been able to
gather, from facts, intimations, rumors,
probabilities, that we shall hear of another
evacuation before we hear of a battle. But
we shall not be much longer in suspense.
Within the next twenty-four hours the
question will be settled:. In Ore meantime
we have no apprehensions as to the re.salts
of a battle.
