Visiting Pennsylvania Soldiers
A Fortress Monroe dispatch says :
Clement B. Barclay, Esq., Commissioner
appointed by the Governor of Pennsyl
vania to visit and relieve the sufferings of
our wounded soldiors everywhere, has ar
rived here, and has already been going
around doing good in the General Hygiea
Hospital. The kind face of this genuine
and well-known philanthropist meets
with nothing but smiles from the poor, sick
and wounded. Mr. Barclay distributes
every delicacy to the inmates of the hos
pitals where they may be needed."
Chaplains in the Army.
The Independent divides the chaplains
in the army of the several denominations
named, in the following proportions:
Methodist, one-third ; New-school Pres
byterians, one-fifth ; Congregationalists,
one-seventh; Episcopalians, one-seventh;
Baptists, one-eleventh ; Old-school Pres
byterians, one-twentieth; Unitarians. one
twentieth ; Roman Catholic, less than one
twentieth.
Juvenile Depravity.
Two little girls certainly not more than
eight and eleven years old respectively,
whose parents reside on Pennsylvania Av
enue, were arrested last evening about dusk
and locked up in the tombs, charged with
picking from the pockets of a lady, while
in a store on Webster street, her portmo
nie, containing $l5 in notes. The port
monie, with $7 of the money. was found
on one of the children: S 5 had been left by
them with a woman on Webster street and
the remainder had been spent by them.

Jewish Synagogue.
The Jews of Erie have organized a soci

both as Priest and Teacher. They have
fitted up rooms, in which the first service
was held on list tiatiirday week. A school
is to be organized as soon as the necessary
arrangements can be made.
Boxing Oil.
The Warren Ledger says that oil '•is be

teen feetsquare, and some twenty feet high.
They are - filled directly from the wells or
tanks along the creek : five of them are
then fastened together and run out of the
creek. when twenty of them are formed
together to form a river fleet. This tleet
is run to Pittsburgh. where the oil is pump

General Tom Thumb.
The levees of this, the "ladies' pet,"
continue to be well attended by enthusias
tic s udiences. His merry roguish eye,
which speaks volumes, seems to be fully
understood by the ladies, who arc fairly
elated with his peculiar receipt. He is
decidedly the most successful " General "
at conquests of this or past generations.—
Saturday will be his last appearance in this
city.
Another Death at the Hospital
A third death occurred at the Marine
Hospital on Tuesday night, viz: Charles
Barnes, of Co. B, 12th Michigan, regiment,
who , had been suffering from- a severe

the vicinity of Niles, Michigan, and was,

Gas Bills.
The Legislature, previous to its adjourn
ment, passed a bill for the relief of land
lords from the payment of gas bills of their
tenants, who may choose to act dishonest
ly, by moving away and leaving such bills
unpaid. The old law. was a most arbitrary
enactment, as it compelled one person to
pay for an article used by another, with
out receiving any consideration.
Resigned.
Captain R. H. Patterson, of the Union
Cavalry, has resigned his commission in
the army, and retired to private life. He
can he found at his old quarters on Dia

SOUTHERN EXTRACTS
From the Atlanta (Ga.) atiedereetf, March 30.
Gloomy Prospect for the Rebels.
A Dr. Banks, residing in Savannah, Ga.,
having just returned from a tour to Rich
mond, our brave Col. Armstrong went to
inquire from him what the news was.
"Cih, Colonel," said he, "we are whipped
on all .sides, everything looks dark and
gloomy for us. McCulloch and Price are
killed, Columbus and Manassas are evac
uated. and hell is to pay everywhere."
The same doctor added that the Yan
kees would have to kill the last Southern
gentleman before they could be conquered.
"It is not, said he to the Colonel, " the
negro question which is now mooted—it is
to know whether the Puritan or the Cava
lier is to rule this continent. For fifteen
year: w.• have been preparing for it, and
the Yankees cannot expect to destroy in a
day what we have taken so long to pre
pare. "

New Style of Canal Boat
The Utica Journal save that a canal boat,
built entirely oa a now plan, is in progress
of construction at the inlet, in that village.
Instead of the usual frame, plunked on the
outside and sheathed within, this boat is
composed of solid sticks of :Imber, break
ing joints and laying one upon the other,
clamped down together with heavy bolts,
and braced with strong stays throughout.
Some persons of experience in canal nav•
igatiOn claim that this boatwill have great
er capacity for her size thin other boats,
as she will be lighter, andat the same time
stronger and more subetastial.
