A RATIIZIA good tiding is told of Lord
ifalmeraton t jn . connection with the late
Aniericatr%ffifetW on
leanaggukCabiaekconncil which had met
to deliberate on the matter, was compli
mented ildfihii?deeisive4olicy whieh the
Government Ana idepted.' He replied,
"Well, and had we not done so, the Cun
ard steamers, would have been compelled
to advertise, weather and the
American Government, permitting.' "
' A vouNo fellow has been congratulating
himself upon havinp recently taken a
very pleasant, trip. Upon inquiry it was
found that he had tripped and fallen into
a young lady's lap.
When to Plant Sorghum
The Bucyrus (Ohio) Forum contains
an article from the Rev. A Myers of that
place, in which he states that the experi
ence of forty persons of his acquaintance
demonstrates that early planting is not
practicable. "Ofall the experiments from
the last of April until the 10th of May,
not one matured; those from the 10th of
May until the 20th were ripe - '
or nearly so:
and all, without exceptions,from the l 2oth
of May until the Ist of June, were per-
fectly matured, demonstrating, conclu
sively, that the latter part of May is the
best time to plant." It is absolutely es
sential to success in making sugar, he says,
that the sorghum should be fully matured,
and as - early planting is not safe, he thinks
we.must have some preparation to bring
the seed up speedily. What that 'is, he •
professes to have discovered, and will an
nounce in time for planting. We hope he
will do so.
Root Cutters and Cleaners
A writer in the • country Gentleman
says:—"When potatoes are fed whole,
or other roots are cut coarsely, the animal
is obliged tohold its head so high to keep
the root in contact with its teeth, that
gravitation alone will pass it to the gullet,
and ordinarily it will pass thence unmasti.
cated, if not too large: but if cut properly
and mixed with cut stalks, straw or hay.
as they always should be, they will be eat
en withthe head down, as in eating grass,
and 'consequently be more thoroughly
masticated and mixed with other food,
and ail danger from choking is wholly
avoided; hence the preventive that I have
used for five years, and recommended to
others to use, is, to cut up the vegetables
as finely as possible with a good root-cut
ter and cleaner.
Vanity.
There is a philosophy in the remark—
" Most people dislike vanity in others,
whatever share they have of it themselves;
but I give fair quarter wherever I meet
with it, being persuaded that it is often
productive of good to the possessor, and
others who are within his sphere of action;
and therefore, in many cases, it would not
be altogether absurd if a man were to
thank God for his vanity, among the other
comforts of life."
