CAMP WVAITIELD gellTl' r
Ile rnit E 'VoIti:TOW.!:, VIR4INIA : -
- April lith, IM2. )
EDITOIt Poirr—ln compliance with my
promise to Write to you upon our arrival
in :Virginia, I shall now endeavor to give
you a few items from the seat of war, com
(men ciug with Our departure from Camp
i Farnum, Md.,
1 We left camp on Sunday, the 6th inst.,
lat noon, and proceeded a distance of three
miles to Liverpool Point, where we were
to embark, but upon our arrival there
I we found that there was not a suill . cieut
i number of transports at dock, to convey
lus, so we were compelled to seek quarters
- in the camp of the sth Eieelsoir Regiment
until they should arrive. We remained
here until Tuesday, tith, when we were put
aboard the steam transport State of Maine,
in company with, two companies of the
2d regiment of this Brigade. You can
readily judge of-our promenading room
when I reveal to you the fact that there
were between eleven and twelve hundred
persons aboard.. The steamer had, in ad
dition. two schooners in tow. both heavily
laden with horses, - wagons, Quarterm as- ,
ter's stores, &e. It ruined incessantly I
from the hour of our departure until Wed
neSday, tth inst., when it cleared op beau
tifully and we bad a tine sail of it until
within about forty miles of Fortress Mon
roe, when the wind arose and blew it per-1
fect
. gale, causing the Bay to be so rough f
it' awakened the men, it- being about .11
o'clock A. M.. and the officer of the guard I
( W. H. Dennison) was compelled to ranee
sentries at all the principal avenues with
fixed bayonets' to prevent the men from
leaving their quarters. lit the course of
a few hours the gale abated trig great ex-
tent. yet not enough :but what.the.vessell
pitched considerably until our arrival at
our destination. Fortunately there way '
but little sea sickness on the voyage, owing
perhaps to the-fact that the roughest por
Lion of it was accomplished durit , the
night and when the men were not a llowed
to run over the vessel. At daylight Fri- i
day morning we found ourselves in the l
Hampton Roads, and soon after at For
tress
Monroe.
Shortly after, while taking an obseria•
tion of the Fortress and the many vessels
anchored near by, our eye was attracted by
the appearance of a singular looking Craft
moored close by, which we afterwards
learned was the justly celebrated "Mold;
tor," or as the rebels choose to term it,
"cheese box upon a raft." The interest
she created was greatly heightened when
a small cloud of light blue smoke was seen
to issue, from the "box," followed by the
report of a gun. This was the signal..
Soon teissimpes and opera glasses were
levelled and the attallnig intelligence an
nounced that the "Morrimae," "James
town," and another rebel vessel were ap
proaching towards the Fortress. The ve
nous crafts: began immediately to weigh
anchor and get out of the way r as.we all
supposed, or an engagement. Such aseat
terment" of vessels has seldom been wit
nesied, and es our steamer had just re
ceived orders from the Fortress to proceed
with the regiment to Ship Point, near the
York River, our anchor was hoisted and
we put back up the Bay. Different stories
about what occurred have reached us, but
nothing defiaite. as we have received neither
paper or letter since we left Maryland, and
have no prospect for the present of a mail.
In company with the "Elm Citi," "South
America, - and several barges, we steamed
up the may to Ship Point, (about two
miles south of York River,) where we dis
embarked at the month of a small creek,
up which we proceeded a short.distance.
The place at which we landed presented
quite u lively aspect, there being at the
time some thirty or forty steamers and
quite as many sailing..eraft, all of which
had previously landed their living cargoes
and were now lying ut anchor awaiting
orders.
NEW GOODS!
The first night we were compelled to en
camp upon a low marshy spot, which was
very disagreeable I assure you. There
were some twenty or thirty other regiments
encamped immediately around us and they
laud preiiously_ procured the most desira
ble locations. However, we remained here
hut one night, next day (Sunday 13th,) we
took up the line of march, and after pro
ceeding nearly five miles through numerous
camps and over miserable corduroy roads
arrived safe and Sound at the present camp,
which is but a short distance south of
Cheeseman's Creek and about three miles
from the rebel works at Yorktown, 'Vir
ginia. The camp hi on level ground with
good 'facilities for drainage, surrounded on
two sides by dense pine woods and with a
Southern and Western exposure. The
tents. used are the "French shelter tent,"
which admits of being carried in the knap
sack.
There are at present none sick in the
Hospital, but several in the quarters, most
probably the effects of the change of cli
mate, water, de. • •
On Tuesdaylast, Private Frank S. Gough,
of Company G I committed saieide by shoot
ing. himself with hiti musket, the bill en
tering aboutthe centre of the frontal bone,
producing instant death. He was labor
ing under a :great depression of spirits for
several days previous. He was buried
yesterday without any ceremony, not even
a coffin, for it is not allowed a suicide in
the army.
The fortifications of Yorktown extend
in a line from river to river—of seven miles
—and are of the most formidable charac
ter—the earthworks are from thirty to for
ty feet in heighth—and- surrounded by a
moat of water sufficient depth to drown:
"the ruthless .invader," however our po
sition will likely overcome this little dif
ficulty. General McClellan is in the ad
vance with Berdan's Sharp . Shooters—the
latter are on picket duty, and invariably
pick off with their telescopic Allegany reb
el scoundrel who has - the presumption to
show his cranium above their entrench
ments. d have.heard several speak about
a certain member of the Sharp Shooters'
who has tweatrseven notches in his rifle
stock, (a progressive age - truly.) Severe
firing was heard in the direction of York
town to-day, and I have since learned that
it was one of our artillery companies
(Howe's) who captured a rebel battery, of
one gun, but at a dear cost, for there are
only four or five whoare . not elthersevere
ly wounded or killed.
We are under marching orders and ex
pect to advance a mile or so to-morrow.
It is currently reported that the rebel. Gen.
Magruder has promulpted an order which
in effect, limits.onrsojourriupon the "Sa
cred Soil" to ten days--said order to. date
from Sunday,, April lath.' How shall we
take it? seriously, or as a good joke ? the
latter I predict.
The attack on the rebel works eannot
be defeived. but it will require many Iliiyel
and , lives also to reduce it, Yorktown is
being daily reinforced from both Richmond
Amid Frederieksburgli. Our troops in point
; oftaaphers are vacuously estimated. The

PITTSBURGH, WEDNESDAY MORNING, AIPIIII. 23, 1562.
The Pennsylvania Reserves a re stati o n.
rd timber back towards Fortress Mu:moo,
but Col. Hays' regintent is encamped near
us and are in line spirits. Several of our
boys (Friend Rifles) have paid them & vis
it, and speak inilowing terms of their
treatment,
treatment, tVe., bile upon the steamer
(State of Maine) 1 learned from the clerk
that they had conveyed. several Pittsburgh
regiments to Fortress Monroe, among the
rest the old 18th.
We are now minus drum calls,
&c., by a late order from headquarters,
I which prohibits the beating of drums or
playing of brass bands; therefore the latter
becomes a useless ornament. The pleas.
I are of picket duty is exemplified from the
;fact that during the past day we have lost
eight or ten men, the or six of whom be
' longed to Berdan's regiment. Our tramp
discipline is now •extremely strict, for in
stance—an inspection ofarms, equipments,
&e., daily. Col. Taylor, of the Third Ex
celiior, is now in command of the brigade,
(hen. Sickles being in Washington, and it
ia.rtnnored under arrest; (for our late skir
mish at Stafford Court Rouse, Va., where
there was some bad Generalship shown.)
The "Friend Rifles" are in fine trim and
eager for the "ball to open.*
During two or three days after our arri
val here we were unpleasantly short of
provender, and a sheet iron pig i hard crack
ers)
was a luxury I assure you. But now,
thanks to our energetic quartermaster,
(Leonard Baneker,) we are again stocked
with fine salt pork and hard broad. A I
most uncomfortable little insect has made
our acquaintance here; he is termed " n I
woodtick," and when found neon the body
can only be taken off with great care,
from the fact that it buries its head into I
the flesh, and if plucked off leaves its head
there, which immediately festers and be- i
comes quite sore. In lying upon this ground
one is very apt to find them.
The climate here is excessively hot, and
Old Se/ comes forth in ill his pristine glory,
burning ears, noses, &e., without regard
to one's feelings.
- Our position in line of battle is the cen
tre of the right wing. The boys are lux-
uriating on oysters, which are Mend here
in abundance.
I have received orders to place every
thing in readiness to move to-morrow.
would write at more length, but your space
and my time both compel me for the pres
ent to desist.
Very truly yours, &e., R. C. H

Those who foster plants through the

the trouble of keeping them ; and, above
all, the pots should, be kept clear of accu

which, potted off. brought in and placed
