The defection of England from the
Anti-Mexican coalition is likely to be an
example to Spain. The Canada reports
an official declaration of the Spanish Gov
ernment, that in no circumstances will it
take part in any effort to deprive Mexico
of sovereignty and independence, and as
the projects of France clearly involve such
a privation, France, we are left to infer,
will have to pursue its projects alone.—
The attitude of Spain would no doubt
have been much less resolute if a Bourbon,
rather than a Hapsburg, had beau tho
nominee of the French Emperor for a
throne. But the l3onapartes have no af
fection for the Bourbons. It will not re
quire weary waiting to see how far this
utterance of the Spanish Cabinet is the
opening of a new policy, or the unc , k of
an old - one. •

Capt. Ericsson told the Navy Depart
ment that the' name Monitor had been
chosen for his turreted boat, because it
