COL. Bane: Having lingered after the
"banquet halls," were deserted by the
patriots, I thought I might as well amuse
myself in jotting down a few crude ideas
in regard to- what was, but is now no
more. The members are gone, and
some of them forever. Even your own
genial, talented and eloquent son of Alle
gheny left for Washington, there to consult
with the massive mind of the great man of
the War Department, our own Stanton.
Since his advent, after the imbecile who,
unfortunately, held that high trust to pros- i
trate it in peculation by and with his fol- I
lowers, to the disgrace of his administration
be it said, for permitting such material to
represent this great nation in a foreign
court, when men of that stamp would have
been more properly provided for by a
place in some strong institution in Alle
gheny City, or at "Bush Hill" Seminary,
there to be left to repent of former mis
deeds committed on an unsuspecting, but
confiding
.people. I am left to wonder
why the virtuous Cummings was not se
lected to accompany this veritable man,
who would have you believe that he is one
of the persecuted solely for his standing
by his former friends, who so admirably as
sisted in defeating his aspirations for a seat
in the United States Senate, where his in
tegrity and talent ill befit him for such an
exalted position. But impudence and ig
norance go far with poltroons when
countenanced by men of ability. He no
longer holds potent sway, on account of his
bleating as to his power in Pennsylvania.
The farce has been played out and Simon
is no more,

The very amiable gentleman who in part
represented Westmoreland and Armstrong
in the House of Representatives, is one of
that peculiar stamp who work and let his
constituents know
.that he exists.' lie
much prefers to get business done modest
' ly, by remaining quiet and unobtrusive ;
and the fact is, thathe could get more done
by his tact and management than tit°
who were loud in their demonstrations;
then indeed the people are deeply indebted
to Richard Graham, the excellent and'
true-hearted DemoCrat, for his unwearied
exertions in behalf of the interests of his
people. It is but reasonable to presume
that the people of that District Will re- i
nominate and return to the House the un
flinching
and honest Democrat who labor-
hard during the session fur the benefit
Of the State. Mr. Graham is, I believe, a
native of Blairsville, and well may it be 111
proud of a gentleman of so much integri
ty, intelligence and sound Democratic
principle. Ire left the seat of govern-,
meat with the kind wisheeand friendship of
all men, for well was he known for his ge
niality of temper and incorruptibility as a
Legislator.
Well, as I stated, all that wereere now
only to beremerithered. I made e visit to

bills, signed and unsigned, — poring over the
contents of the latter, preparing them for
the final touch of his manly signature.
There has not been one bill vetoed this
session. This , speaks well, at all • events,
for the assembled wisdom of the State.
Clerk Small of the House is on hand set
tling up the business of the House. This
gentleman was complimented with a unani-
Aions vote of the members for his unwea
ried exertions, bland. and courteous con
duct to all.. It is more than probable this
gentleman will be the :Chief Clerk next
session, for I heard many regret that they
hid not voted for him this year. Such is
the reward of true merit, and it is proper
and right that it should be so.
The New Judgeship.
The Governor will have to appoint some
gentleman to the position created by the
new act making another Judge for your
county; who it will be is not hard to deter
mine owing to the exertions of the indi
vidual-in: his own person. This, to be sure,
is modest, but such things will take -place
in the best regulated families of F.
The Hall of the House will be appropri
ately decorated for the coming Fourth of
DemOcrutic Convention, when the
real friends of the Constitution and the
Union of the States will assemble to place
in nomination new men, fresh -from the
ranks of the people, for State offices. As
you, Mr. Editor, are named it is but right
thatyour friends should be posted all over
the State; that you are in the hands of the
people,wiffing and ready to stand,or fall by
the action'of that Con+ention; to mYinind
the West is fully entitled to a share in the
officmand why not Allegheny county, with
her ten thousand brave, staunch, unflinch
ing Democrats be heard and "known in
the gates of the elders of the land." I for
one proclaim for old Allegheny county a
fair and impartial hearing on theever mem
orable day which '
proclatmed•liberty to a
nation of people not equalled in the uni
versal world.

" I never agreed to go," said Bill
Reese.
" Look-a-here, fellers, I tell you we can
'cumulate that 'ere honey, and of you fel
lers are afeerd to go, I can find somebody
that ain't."
This left-hander at their courage set
them to warding off with other excuses.
I'm not afeerd to go," said Jed,
" but maybe Robison is a Union man, and
it wouldn't do, you know."
" Not by a dermid sight; he,ain't. He's
one of these cus.sed atautral Secesh that's
ten times wuss than an out-and -outer.
He carries news to Greenbrier camp, and
I'll prove it on him afore a week."
" But, then," interposed Bill, "we can't
set past the camp guards ; and if we could
it looks a little too much like steulid'."
" Gittin' a past the guardsain't common
amusement," said Jack, "jilt say you'll
go, and the honer is ourn. And as to'the
moral pint, we'll go-'cordin' to law and I
custom, you know. Fast, demandin' of
the Secesh bees to take the oath, they re
fusiu', we arrest them and confiscate their
property. All fair and legal, you see.
What's stealin' in times o' peace is confis

Their qualms of coascience being thus
satisfactorily disposed of, and Jack having
insured their hides against the hounds,
they agreed to go if he would get a pass to
take them through the guard lines.
" Come right along, then," said Jack,
and they followed him to a remote beat,
where was walking, to and fro, a German
sentinel, who could not read English. Af
ter the usual challenge Jackadvanced. and
drawing from the folds of his pocket-book
a crumpled paper, read as follows :

The German understood none of this,
except the name and title of the General,
and Jack, to prevent him from calling a
corporal of the guard, looked very impor
tant, and made him understand that the
General wished the expedition kept a pro
found secret. The 'sentinel deferentially
stepped aside, and they passed on.
"How in the dickens did you get that
pass, ,lack?" inquired Dia. -
"Pass be hanged ! was nothingbut
a little note Robison sent up to the Gen
eral t'other day by me, about the boys a

him, his dogs shouldn't leave har nor hide
of 'em. He done it to skeer me, as he

very day, and mebbe steal his beehive or
somethin'; Says he. 'do you: see them ?"

AbOut two hundred yards fromthe house
was a footway across the river, that part
farthest from the house being a single
plank., The water was three or four feet
deep, swift and cold, and the banks quite

In about half an hour from the time
Jack left his .friends, ;Robison was stir
