DAILY POST.
- FRIDAY 11f AI;RIL 11.
lion. Andrew Johnston
From a recent speech of the Governor
of Tennesee, we select the following for
the edification of his abolition admirers :
Wo•have had soine clamorous harangues
about 'Southern rights': The most of them
have proceeded from noisy dis-unionists,
who never own•-d a uegro; they have been
terribly disturbed. 1 myself own ufer—
.only seven—and expect they cost me more
labor than those who own a hundred.
Go to South Carolina to get your rights?
I could not drop into the Legislature there,
because I only own seven negroes. three
less than the number required.
‘Vhenee the cause of this rebellion ?
What rights have been taken away ? Who
wants to take negroes into the territories
and is unable to do so? Who lost any
rights under the Constitution ? There are
two parties in existence who want dissolu
tion. Slavery and a Southern Confedera
cy is the hobby. Sunnier wants to break
up the government, and so do the aboli
tionists generally. They hold that if slit
' very survives, the Union cannot endure.—
' Secessionists argue dint if the Union con
tinues slavery is lost. Abolitionists want
no compromise; but they regard peaceable
secession as a humbug. The two occupy
the same ground. Why ? Abolition is dis
solution: dissolution is secession; one is
the other. The North is carrying on the
war to maintain the law and the Constitu
tion. When submission conies the war
ends. When I 'look around and see those
gentlemen, clothed in the uniform of their
country. my heart bleeds, and I welcome
the soldier as the protector and savior of
his country. They are not your enemies,
but friends who come here to protect those
sacred tights and privileges guaranteed by
the Constitution, and to restore peace to
oar distracted country.
