LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS. HARRISBURG OORRESPONDEN-0-E Heusi of RSPREMENTATIVES, • ' April 7th r 1862.• "An act to prohibit the storing of crude oil in the Fourth Ward of the city of Pitts- burgh," (reported by the Judiciary.)— This act should be applied to the city prop er, inasmuch as the oil is as dangerous as powder, and this article is prohibited in large quantities. The, safety of the people so densely crowded together, demand pro tection from the Legislathre. Will ou r members attend to this in as good faith as they have other matters pertaining to the welfare of the citizens of your county? Ou motion of Dr. (hogs, the. Farmers' Railroad bill was taken up and amended, by adding the names of a few more eorpo raters; then passed. The bill relating to compensating volun teers and paying those who furnished cloth ing, Sc., passed as amended .by Jodie Shannon, which 'not only Makes it-accept hie to all in its Present shape, but will Senate the Treasury from peculation. T o Senate should now pass it in its present 'shape, as several out West and elsewhere stand much in want of what is justly due them, and the State should be above de prising honest ? patriotic and enterprisinz men, from their honest dues. SECTION 9. "That the provisions of this act, so far as applicable, shallhe extended' to all citizens and residents of Penusylva nia who may have heretofore entered into the active service of the United States, in any other State of this Union, Provided. That such persons have not been, or shall not hereafter be.provided fqr and paid by such other State,or by the United States." The rush of business is tremendous here members doing ell in their power to obtain the ear and sight -of the Speaker, first.— Your members have their work nearly completed, and for the first time in my ex perience at the seat of government, is the business of Allegheny county so well done as at this session. So much for worth and talent in your members. The correspondent of the Sunday dfer eery uses the following language; • The labors of the different ' Investigating Com mittees are about drawing to a close.. The Hopkins Tonnage Tax Committee have made a most thorough investigation, and thus far not a particle of evidence has been elicited that will in the least implicate any gentleman connected with the Pennsylvan ia Railroad Company. It will undoubtedly end in a most emphatic, triumphant acquit tal of the charge of corruption in the pas sage of the measure, with the strong.pre judices of every member of the committee against the Company. It is natural to in fer that nothing has been left undone to bring to light all the evidence that would in the least militate against the Company. Therefore the friends of Philadelphia in popularity of this giganitic enterprise." terests have cause to rejoice in the'growing Now to all of this I most fervently state that there is net one grain of truth, and I am herein myseat instructed to sayfrom high authority that the testimony add aced before that honorable committee brands the asser tion of the correspondent as without the shadow of fairness. This will be fully cr.- tablished when you read the testimony ta ken. I know well what I say, and say to you and the public that the testimony will utterly astound the people in the frauds perpetrated by men holding positions of trust. Mr. Hopkins and the gentlemen as sociated with him are incapable of persecu ting men for the sake ofpersecution. What they did was for the public good, and that. good might result from their labors. The city will not have much to congratulate themselves with when you and others have i read the testimony in the hands , of the committee of investigation, and of which the very honorable member from Wash ington is the worthy chairman. The stay law was debated at length by several of the leading members, such as Williams, Comma, Bighlm, liopkins, Smith, (of Chester,) with others. The last hills that were taken were all marked with a small red cross upon the numerical figure in the right hand, and upper corner. You can follow those up, for I have neither had the courage nor the heart, to undertake such a thing. 'The merchant sank as pale as death. "Henry is the only lett banded person upon the premises, he groaned. owing at me as if he wished me to deny 'his statement. But I could not. I knewthat his own son was the guilty party. "Ask me no more," I said, with tears in my eyes—for the father i s agony deeply moved me. Thestricken man grasped my hand, and with sobs and tears he begged my pardon for the wrong he had done meoind blessed me for the assurance I had given him. On the following morning he brought me fifty dollars, in eight different bills, all, marked with the red cross. "I know all now," he whispered in bro ken accents. Be kind to me, and let this not go out to the world." I kept my promise, and lived to see the old man smile again; for when Henry saw the deep agony of his father, his heart was touched, aell he not only acknowledged all his wild sins, and humbly bead for par don, but he became a good and true man, —an honor and an ornament to society.
