LOGAL AND GENERAL NEWS.
A Pennsylvania Rebel.
Among the rebels taken at Winchester
was Lieut. George C. Jankin, a native of
this State, and a son of Rev, D. X..lnnkin,
a Presbyterian minister, well known in this
State. having once, resided in Hollidaysburg,
and received. an appointment as Chaplain
in tlw Navy. front President:Bnehanan, in
1t5.58. The tinnily had formerly resided in
ir...dnin, and George lived there with a rel
ative till the war broke out. He was
among the first to join the rebel army and
received a Lieutenant's commission. As
soon as the father heard it he secured the
ueec, sary documents. both from the pow•
ers at Washington and the rebel powers at
Richmond, with which he proceeded to
limper's Perry and used every exertion to
induce his son to resign and go North with
hint. This George refused to do under
any consideration, and the loyal f:uhci• was
cotapelled to disown him and leave him to
his line. It is a singular coincidence that
in the first Little in which ho was engaged
after Bull Run. that he was compelled to
(Ina , and tight against many of his old ac
quaintances and friends frinn Hollidays
lam; and vicinity, who were in the Kith
regiment. The young man was released - ,

THE' LEFT-HANDED 'THIEF
"I will." he replied, taking a seat near
I me. "Within the last year 1 must have
lost more than .two ihousand ~lollatra !-
It !gust have been taken frimi the store.
I knoW this. for I knoW the amount of
goods which has been sold, and I know
how much cash 1 have received. I be-an
to be watchful four months - ago. Two
months ago a man paid me in the after
noon, five hundred dollarS. T pot it in
the drawer, and on the nest morning. be-
titre you cathe, I looked at' yOur 'mat ae ;
count and found only two hundred of thal
set 'down. Froni that time 1 have been
very watchfal, and have detected a dozen
similar cases. I have noticed every dol
lar that came in after the bank accoant
was made tip; and have also taken note of
the amount entered upon the book; and
(hiring that. time there has been a leaking
of over seven hundred dollars !—.Now
who has access to that drawer and to the
safe?"
I was astonished. I could only assure my
employer that I knew nothing of it ; and I
saw that he wanted to believe me. I ask
ed him if he had spoken of this to any
one else. Not a living soul but me, he re
plied. I pondered a few moments, and
then said:
•`Mr. Wharton, could I he made to be-
IleVe that even ignorantly I had wronged
you to the value - of a dollar, I should not
feel the perfect consciousness of honor I
now feel. There must he a thief some
where. Some of the clerks may find ac
cess to the money ! But are you willing
to let the matter rest 111- a few dai ;
will strain every nerve lo detect the evil
doer."
He finally consented to let me try my hand
at detecting the thief. He promised not
to lisp a syllable upon the subject to any
one else. and also to leave the matter
wholly in my hands for a week. lie gave
me .a warn grasp when we separated, and
said that he hoped 1 would succeed.
On the following morning I entered the
store with all my energies of mind center
ed upon the work before me. There were
four clerks or salesmen, and one boy, be
sides myself, in constant attendance, and
all money received had to pass through
my hands. Sometimes I made up my cash
account at night, and sometimes not till
the next morning. In the latter ease I gen
erally put the money drawer into the safe,
and locked it up. The key to the safe was
kept in a smaller drawer to which there
were two keys, one of which I kept, while
Mr. Wharton kept the other. only
other person who ever. helped us in the
store. was Henry WhartOn, our employer's
only son, a youth twenty years (Wage. He
was preparing for college, under a private
tutor, but found time to help us when bus
iness was driving. He was akind hearted,
generous fellow, and a strong mutual at
tachment had grown ~.up between us. At
first I thought of getting him to assist, me
in finding the thief; but as Wharton had
promised to speak to no one else upon the
subject. I concluded to keep silent also.
That night I counted the money, but
made no entry of the account. There were
three hundred and forty odd dollars. I put
it into a new calf-skin pocket book—placed
that in the money drawer—and locked the
whole up in a safe. On the following morn
i I. found fifty dollars! I counted the
money over carefully, and was not mista
ken. I began to feel unpleasantly. Mr
sdspicions took a very unwelcome turn.
During that day I pondered upon the
subject, and finally hit upon the tbllowing
ex peri utviit : When I had locked up the
safe for the night. I spread upon the knob
of the door, and upon the money drawer,
some pale red lead, being careful not to
get enough on to be easily noticed. I had
left the cash account open to be closed up
in the morning. Wheu 1 next opened the
safe, all was as I had left it. Ihe next
night I fixed the knob in the same man
lier, and on the rollowing morning I found
forty dollars gone! ['lion the pocket-book
were finger marks of red lead; and whet:
eame to open my cash book I found the
same kind of marks there. So 1 had
learned one thing, the thief knew enough
to see whether any aceount had been
made. Of the money before he took it !
I felt more unpleasantly than berure
fur my unwelcome suspicions were being
confirmed. I had gained new light.
There was a peculiarity in the red finger
marks which told me a sad sturv. Still I
wish Ito try further.
