'Thin important eommittee.have had sev
eral meetings lately and have elicited front
certain witnesses important testimony that
will fix guilt on several members of the
I late Legislatnre. The testimony taken, is
if the most startling character, such as
will fill the public with alarm for the purity
; of our laws and institutions. Were I only at
i liberty to writeyou what I know, you would
: feel alarmed for the stability of any law
now nu our state - hooks. It is shameful
and disgraceful to all concerned, that such
a wholesale plunder c 4 mid have taken place
with men high in authority. Were it proved
on men I Wless note, it would consign them te;
the Penitentiaries, East and West.

The "London American.
1 lake from re remarkably well written
letter of the lion. Thomas Williams to a
gentleman in London, and published in the
London American. It is so justly com
plimentary to the Secretary of War, that
I have taken the trouble to copy the same,
for your paper. The introduction to this
letter by the editor of' that paper, with the
remarks thereon, is very flattering to your
very able member. "It rejoices me now
'o be enabled to say to you that the clouds
have lifted fromus at last, and the icy ter
p.or which has so longbenumbed our limbs,'
has given way Under the quickening influ
ence imparted .to our , affairs by the new
"War Minister," of whoic advent you are,
already advised. From the moment than Stanton took the helm, the whole as
- pect of affairs has changed—the country
has breathed freely—the popular heart has
been again elated—treason has hidden its
head in terror, and our arms have gone
'forth conquering and to conquer. The ti
dings which every line of telegraph is now
hurrying to our 'ears, already assure us that
the serpent of rebellion is scotched at last.
and that before the next steamer shall
cross and re-cross the ocean, the stars and
stripes will be floating once more overall
the territories of the Union."
The appropriation bill was referred to
a Committee olConference—this will take
a few days to patch irp ere it is reported;
that is, should the Committee agree.
The appropriation bill was up and undue
consideration, the whole of the afternoon
was spent in loud.declamation. . Mr. Cess
na made a lengthly• speech in favor of t
bill reported by that gentleman. .llr.
Armstrong replied in a costic speech and
others took a pitch in, and the afternoon
was flittered away. in 'fruitless bly.ther,,
amounting to "nix.'
The House•is holding night session to
dispose of the bill left over 'from Tuesday
in the private calendari;every.thingis
hur
ry with no little contusion. This moment
your talented member who sees a bond in
every question thatames, is new address
, ing the House in regard -to a claim of some
patriot.,
,at all events the bill passes, and
Thos. took his seat looking disgusted at.
such proceedings,' for every hair on that
gentleman's head bristles - a "Rail

THE CHASE OF THE BLOODHOUNDS
From Beaten Patios; and Those Who

RI" THOMAS COLLEY GRATTAN
[Continued from Yesterday.]
We all had a fair start and a large ma
jority went cleverly over. The Squire's
horse seemed to go on invisible wings, so
beautifully did the rider lift him through
the air. I turned round rnv head and
salt two of our party splashing in the
water. Who' were they ? What matter ?
" Hark forward !" and away we went into
a rather thick copse on the right. "Heav
ens!" cried some one, "should the poor
fellow have stumbled and • fallen in the
tangled cover." A frightful chance, for
he would have surely been torn to pieces
before any of us could have come close up
with the Blood-hounds. But we struggled
-
through, the dogs - invisible in the brush
wood: but theinmisie leadingus on. While
they doubled and seemed battled in the in
tricate covert, Godroon had gallantly
worked his way through it, gaining time
by malty turns, like a close-pressed hare.
and we all gave a shout of joy and ' en
couragement as weinarked him through
an opening at an easy canter on the rising
ground leading up towards the rath.
He cut some frolicsome capers, looked
quite fresh and at ease with himself, like a I
mall who had done his work well : and he!
quietly stepped on towards the path,
where he paused. looked round him, and
then deliberately climbed iron a tree, pre- I
pared to survey and enjoy the progress ofl
the hunt. and the proceedings of the hunts

RS we got well fiat of the thicket nail gal
loped on after the dogs, now lying desper
ately close on the scent again, and running
like the wind. I and all the rest had our
eyes fixed while we rode on, as the blood
red figure of Godroon straddle-legged on
the branch which moved flexibly up' and
down at his metion, and seemed to keep
tint., with the chorus of the pack. Sud

and still yelling in fearful harmony they
seemed to drop over in a compact mimes to
the far off side of the mound before we
could gain the top. What a terrilvle few
minutes of suspense it was, and with what
dread we strained our eyes forward when
we got fairly , to the top, expecting to see
the blood-h o unds tearing the mangled body
of what we now felt to be our victim, as
well as that of the ferocious beasts. Great
and indescribable was our joy—l am sure
we all felt alike—to mark the crimson fu
gitive bounding along still some hundreds
of yards in advance ; but every action
showed that lie was now running for his
life with almost superhuman speed.
To the right and left and before him
there way not a vestige of shelter to be
seen, a bleak common eovered with light
' grass, hero and there a tuft of rank her
bage. and large blocks of stone as ifthrown
at random about—such was the dreary
and de.spairingprospect. Poor Godroon
scented to feel the horror of his situation,
for his head was frequently turned back.
to measure no doubt the decreasing dis
tance between hint and us. He was going
straight in the direction of Slievenamora
—the only object rising from the wide
spread plain, and offering the only chance
of escape, could . he hold his breath and
keep up the rapid pace for a mile or more
further. The horses scrambled with great
difficulty through the scattered blocks and
over the many crevices which now broke
the ground. There were two or three
heavy falls of beasts and men. The dogs
gained on us every moment.
We did our best to keep steady hands
and hold our horses well up ; and "the
field" bow reduced to seven, formed a
gloomy contrast in their silent anxiety to
the bounding elasticity of spirit with
which Men follow hounds who are hunt
ing natural game. A couple of hares
sprang . up . before the dogs. We hoped
this might have turned them aside, chang
ing the scent. They never seemed to
heed them more than A. well bred setter
would heed a lark,: with a pack of grouse
ore running - conveyy , of partridges before
him. Our dogs required• a. higher flavor.

last Godroon was iiiitigthe rugged base
of the mountain, the dogs closing fist on
him. and we in utter despair ,o 1 pushing
our horses up'through the crags in any

said the Squire to Heekvan, in a confi

look. "Hell 'scramble up somehow--
life is • sweet,: and -strength and activity

we still worked our way.
