"The Merrimac's projectiles were most
ly permission shells, fired from 10 or 11-
inch rifled pieces. Twenty-three shots
struck us, including two from the Minim
, sota, which, during the engagement, fired

tired at a distance of twenty feet perpen

little. Three or four others struck us just

The pilot-house received ono shot on one
of the upper corners, nearly battering it
down. A little later in the action, howev
er, a heavy shell was thrown from a dist
ance of about fifteen feet, against the front,
at an angle of about thirty. degrees, strik
ing the two upper bars just at the lookout
crack, the main force being on the lower
of the two, tbreing it in about an inch, and
opening a crack of one-fourth of an inch
on the opposite side. She twice attempt
ed-to open a hole in our side with her ram,
as she did the Cumberland, once . striking
us squarely on our beam, nearly abreast of
the turret, jarring us somewhat, and leav
ing a small dent on our iron side. Our
hull remains perfectly tight, and the tur
ret, notwithstanding the severe hammer
ing, revolves as accurately and easily as
when we left Sew York.
"We experienced a severe gale un our
wan down, coming through it safely. That,
and our trial with the Merrimac proves the
Monitor. we think, a success.

'The noise ou board the Monitor was
terrific, the striking of the shot against her
sides and the turret; the awful noise of her
own guns, the whizzing of shot over the
deck4and the explosion of these enormous
rifle shells when they struck, made a terri
ble din.
• When the guns recoiled, the noise of the
maidffe pendulums swinging by end closing
the ports reverberated throughoutthe-ves
-eel. The men on boardworked like heroee i
&met with perspiration and begrimed

the Committee on the Conduct of the War.

nomination was unanimously rejected.
The President, it is said, has been asked
to bring Sigel here to take his division.
Gen. Sigle was unanimously confirmed
to-day as Alajor General. Frank Patter
son's nomination as Brigadier General was
considered. but is not yet confirmed. His
error is that Gen. McClellan recommend
ed hint.
The report of the Judiciary Committee
on the Censorship ()evasions much talk
among newspaper men. The censure vis
ited by the report on Mr. Thayer, the Cen
sor for the past three months, is not sus
tained by the majority of newspaper cor
respondents in Washington, who believe
that Mr. Thayer has administered his diffi
cult and embarrassing duties with as much
success and impartiality as could be ex
pected. The position and duties were
novel. Your correspondent does not hes
itate to say, as he did before the Commit
tee, that no one holding the office has done
so well as Mr. Thayer. Several of the
more flagrant irregularities complained of
hy the Committee, occurred whhe Mr.
Thayer was not in charge at all.
