hand. The less soil is disturbed after
planting the better, as the whole ground
is corered with a network of small,
fibcrJas roots. Never allows the vines
to bear the first year planted, but picks
off all the fruit stems andrunners. Pro

the straw is wasted each year, and needs
to be supplied every autumn. Two

each season will answer. i
Varieties that succeed in some soil
and situations fail in others. The Ho ,

when impregnated with some staminate
sorts than with others. On this sub
ject he is trying experiments. The
strawberry season ought to be length

but with proper selection of sorts may
Le extended to five weeks. The sorts
Mr. K. liked beet were the following :
Early—Baltimore Scarlet, Jenny
raincT;TtiirrTNATPine
Late—Trollope's litiotoria, Kitley's
Gdliah, Nimrod, Buist's Prize.
Medium —Brighton Pine,Boston
Pine, MeAvoy'e Superior, Scott's Seed
ling, Moyameusing, Downer's Prolific,
Fillmo Gplden Seeded, British
Queen, Vicomtesse Hericart de Thury,
Wilson's Albany, Triomphe de Gaud.
For a general crop, Wilson's Albany
and Triomphe de G-and are the most
profitable. The latter is the strawberry
of all strawberries, and possesses all
excellencies that can be desired—pro
ductive, beautiful,-large, of fine qual•
ity, berries shipping well and the plants
are hardy. It is not as productive as
the Wilson, but an acre will bring
totrtart - mr - - Setif; Mimi to Chia - Igo,
Cleveland, Philadelphia and New York.
Received orders from New York for
more than his whole crop. If confined
to one Strawberry he would plant the
Triomphe de Gand. Although not
quite as productive as the Wilson, he
could say with safety' that it produces
more than three hundred bushels to the
acre. For canning the Wilson is pre
ferred. The only Irralcire used is well
rotted stable-manure. The same plant
drummers are kept off, will bear ten
gems. A good many crowns will start
and cluster around the Original plant,
each bearing a fruit stem, and all pro.
clueing a very large amount of fruit.
Mr. Vick expressed - pleasure at the
remarks of Mi. Knox. They show
that the very best culture is success
ful..o4 4 large scale. We are too apt
to think that good"cultxtre must be con
fined to amateurs or garden culture ex
elusively, spina unsuited to the or
chard and market, garden. This is an
error. That system which is most
