atOil creek and its branches, mostly in
Penang q county• from which the oil was
raise/by! pumping.
In thsi course of last summer a well was
sunk 470 feet de^p, and a vein was struck
from whlch the oii flaw prorusely with
out pumping, and now a barge number of
such wells eziat, mostly along Oil creek
and within a distance of seven or eight
miles, a few being on the Allegheny river
below its mnuth. These 11)wing wells
Yield variously. 100 to 500, 1000, 1600,and
in one case 3000 bar:, l. of ~,, per day,
when allowed to ft ,w Tile immense
quantity they have yielded has so reduced
the price, however, that the flow of oil has
been partially or holly shut off by stop•
cocks in the tubing, and they a-e allowed
to yield freely only when satisfactory
orders are to be filled. This temporary
closing of the flow has not been found to
affect tbeir protectiveness.
The quantity of oil raised- and ready fn•
transportation, as_ was actually observed
two weeks singe by Mr. Hickok, amounted
.40 about 26.000 barrels in — vats, near the
wells; 1 000 do. at the railroad stations,
awaitingtransportation, and 25,000 do at
Oil City, awaiting Ph , prn mt down the Al

Rebel Steamer Captured.
EtosToN, March 6 —The United States
gunboat Sazott has arrived. from
. Ship
Island, with dates to the 22d. Sfie repOrts
seeing a vessel supposed to be the steams.;
Kensington, which towed the supply ship
Vermont, from here, on Sunday last, off
lisiteras.
The health of the troops at Ship Island
was goo!. All the oyster boats in the
vicinity had been captured, with 35 priss
onere, thus cutting off the supply of oys.

to blow her up, but enlr'succeeded in kil
ling himself. The Magnolia is a large
side wheel steamer.
General Lander's Funeral,
WASHINGTON, March B.—The military
display attendant on the funeral of Briga
dier Genoral Lander, this afternoon, was
large and impressive. A number of the
most d stanguielied gentlemen connected
with thl army and navy, and in civil pok
eitions were present. The flags were
everywhere at half•mast.

BOSTON, March B.—Colonel Lee had a
formal reception from the citizens of Box
bury last evening. Gov. Andrew and the
