' From a private letter dated ()open,
hegen, January 20, we, extract the fol.
lowing bit of skating intelli , genoe:
" There has been some pretty good
skating on the moats about the city
;late, and it was enjoyed more than
was ever known before. At last the
Danish ladies are learning this invig
.rating and healthful amusement, al
though as yet there are but few outside
of the diplomatic corps who are to be
seen on the ice; yet the ladies are
gradually overcomikg the horror u ith
Which they at first affected to look
+in the unladylike recreation. The
crown prince, Christian, and his fam
iiy set the example by ' frequently par
ticipeting, in the sport. His son,
Prince, ,Frederiok, a young man about
twenty, is a good skater. His sisters,
toe eldest of whom is spoken of as the
] i h
I' hire queen of England, are frequent
on the ice, making rapid progress.
ey are both very pretty, and care no
ore for a fall on the ice, or a seat
there when down, than other folks.

FORTRESS MCNROE, Feb: Eft—Yin Bala
timore, Feb 2 , 6.—The stesimer Spaulding
arrived this afternoon, having left Roan.
oke Island the day before yesterday and
Hatteras yes erlay.
By tte Spaulding we learn of the failure
of the attempt to lay the telegraph, table
across the Bay. On the day the Hoboken
sailed, 16 miles of the cable were laid in
the mcst enmesh:ll manner, Wi o ; open.%
tone were stopped for the night. •
Yesterday the Hoboken was busily era.
gaged in taking the soundings, when the
severe blow of that day struck her at noon.
Her steam pipe broke soon after and she
became enmansgeable, drifting upon Cape
Henry, where she .went ashore and broke
in two last night. All hands remained on
the wreck until 11 o'clock this forenoon,
when the Spaulding took them off. It is
states that the Hoboken passed within ,
ght of the blockading ste•imer Cambridge
bat4he latter paid her noon ice. A couple
other n aval vessels also passed her without
offering to render any assistance. The
Hoboken is a total loss.
The remainder ofthe cable out- kft Hiller,
war destroyed before it was abardoned...—,
About an equal quantity is laid in the Bay
and the end fa buoyed up. Mr. Heiss goes
to' Washington tonight.
The steamer B. B. Forbes was seen by
.the Spaulding, ashore near Nag's Head
'this morning; white flags were displayed
on all , the houses in the vicinity. The
Spaulding brings the marls and passengers
but no news.
The flag of truce taday took about

day, having left Elizabeth City on San=
day at noon. He represents everything
quiet in that locality. The entire fleet of
the enemy left the waters of Pasquotank
on Saturday morning, but two - gunboatil
returned in the evening. But few inhabi
tants remain in thci - plide.
The Wilmington journal of Saturday
says five °rids. Federal gun boatchad mu
tared Roanoke river.
A very severe blow from the Northwest
occurred yesterday afternoon and last night. ,
The frigate Cumberland, bt Newport ewe,
dragged her anchors, and several idioms,
ere got adrift, and some damage was done
by collisions in the Roisds.
The fire of yesterday continued during
the evening, and a guard was kept all
night. Great credit is due to Col, Bendiz
sad the members of the Tenth New York
Regiment, who all worked most manfully,
and by their efforts prevented a most dile
estrous conflagration, which was threaten
ed in consequence of the high wind.'

and beans, with the Potawatamies and
Winnebagoes, of a hich his own people
stood in the utmost need. '. With
,this
intention he had gone some distance up
Rook river, when an express from Gen.
Atkinson ordered him to return. This
order the old chief refused to obey, say
ing that the General had no right to is
sue it. A second express from Atkin
son threatened Black Hawk that if he
did not return peaceably, force would
be resorted to. The aged warrior be
came incensed at this, and utterly re
fused to obey the mandate, but at the
same time sent word to the General ,
that he would not be the one to coin- 1
mance hostilities.
" The movement of the renowned
warrior was immediately trumpeted
1 abroad as an invasion of the State, and,
with more rashness than wisdom, Gov.
Reynolds ordered the Illinois militia to
take the field; and they were joined by
the regulars under Genera] Atkinson at
„Rock Island. Major Stillman having
kinder his command 275 mounted men,
the chiefpart of whom were volunteers,
while a few like myself were regular

go on a scouting expedition
" I knew well what would follow;
but still as I was under orders, I was
obliged to obey and together with the
rest proceeded some thirty miles up
Rock river, to where sycamore creek
empties into it. This brought us to with
in six or eight miles of Black Hawk,
who on that day, May 14th, was en
gaged in preparing a dog feast for the
purpose of fitly celebrating a contem
plated visit of some Potawatomie chiefs.
"Soon after we saw three Indians
approaching us bearing a white flag,
who upon coming up were made pris

mounted militia, and two of them
killed, while the other three escaped.
