As early as the year 1761 arid 1762,
a few pious, noble-minded mennonceiv

and Christianizing the 'barbarous sav
ages of the West, and two noble disci

Post and John Heekewelder-,--went
among them for the purpose. Others
followed these glorious pioneers, and
three regular_stations on the Tuscarawas
river, in the eastern part of Ohio, with
quite a number of Indian corovertfi of
both sexes, were the result of their la
bors. These stations, besides their die
tinctive,xitles of Shoenbrun, Gnaden

known as the Moravian Missions or
Towns,
and their converted inhabitants
as the Moravian Indians. These wil

under the teachings, preachings and
practices of the good missionaries; strove
to become learned and exemplary Chris

Quakers, non-resistants. When the
war of the Revolution broke out, these
poor Indians were placed between two
fires. The warlike whites abused them
because they were Indians, and.the war
like savages palled them squaws and
cowards because they would not take up
arms against the Americans, while both
parties alike robbed and plundered them
with impunity.
Put, oh ! a thousand times worse than

be it spoken—a band of white wretches
a band of ungodly robbers, cut-throats
and assassins—we can find no milder
epithets t) suit the ruffians—a band of
white wretches, we say, numbering a I
hundred, dignified by the name of vol

Colonel Williamson, boldly marched
against these few pious, unresisting red
men, and, after deceiving them with
the most damnable lies, telling them
they were their friends, who had come
to conduct them to Fort Pitt, (now

future be protected and oared for, and
having by this mere got them collect

A HISTORICALAKETCH
BY saizssox B.ESSATT.
at what they do T We *ill tell
Whither was he going and for what ?
That little army had sworn to extermi-.
nate the Indians root and branch—to
give no quarter to any of the race,
whether friend or foe, old or young,
man, woman or child, and he was the
commander of the expedition.
That expedition too, marched over
"Williamson's trail," direct to the plun
dered Moravian towns on the Tusoarawas
and thence to the other Moravian towns
on the upper br nehes'bf the Sandusky,
hoping thus to, fled more innocent and
harmless victims to plunder and mur
der. But they were greatly disappoint
ed, for the harmless Indiana had fled,
and left desolation behind them. Then,
for the first time, it would seem, the
thought occurred to this bold army,
that, the peaceable Indians having de
parted, they teight 'possibly meet with
hostile warriors prepared to give them a
warm reception, an idea that they ap
peared to relish as little as any soldiers
that ever went into battle. Not that
we would deny there may have been
brave and generous spirits among them,
but we think there must have been
many selfish cowards, since no others
would have been concerned in the wa
ton massacre we have mentioned, or
been anxious or willing to be-foremost
in another.

of Ten Years Standing.
I have been suffering for ten years peat from
Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia. I lima of Dr.
Schenok's ooming out to Martin Hoch's, and I
thought I would go and see him, as my disease
had increased to violence within the past two yeas,
and I had been under treatment of several doctors,
from whom I reoelred no benefit. In the early
part of June of this year I went to see Dr. Schenck,
and_yras examined by him with his "13.131SPIROM
ETER." I have been bait' his Pubnonic
Ehus Wed Tonic and Mandrake PM. since then, and
I must say that I am greatly benefltt.d by their
use; indeed, I might almost say that I am well.
