DIONDiat 0I "V' MATT g, S . The Philadelphia and Erie Railroad. We Ole-the-following, from the Erie Observer; for - whatever it is worth: "We learn from an authorative source in Phila delphia that the officers of the Pennsyla vania IL R. Co. commenced signing the bonds of the first named corporation last week, according to the terms of the recent contract. This tapltles the question of the lease &finitely; and the road is now fully under the control of the Central company. We are assured that operations will be pushed forward with the greatest rapidity, Mr, Thomson, President of the Penney'. yenta company, remarked to a friend of ours a few days ago, that that corporation was determined to have a share of next fall's Lake grain trade, and everybody knows that what Mr. T. undertakes he performs. We see that half.a-dozen, or more, engineers have recently gone out the road, and naturally suppose that they have done so for the purpose of commenc ing work on the line. The company will probably build one or two grain elevators at this city, during the next season, and the organization of a lineof propellers will, in all_likelihood, soon follow, If the road is not finished by next fall, we shall be de calved more than we expect to be, It is commonly reported that Col. Black, the present Superintendent of this division, will be transferred to the Eastern section of the road, and that J. D. Potts, Req., a well known and able officer of the Penn , sylvania R. R., will take his place." 0- OIL CITY.—The Franklin Citizen has the following upon the mushroom city of Venango county; Oil Oity, reader, not town, village or borough, butaity, is rapidly assuming a position amdng the business places of the State: While on a visit to the land of 100 barrel wells, last week, we were utter. /y astoeished M the rapid growth it had made lika few brief months. It now boasts several warehouses, three refiner , les, and about as many hotels, stores, and groceries, as its older sister. Franklin.— We noticed that highly commendable im., provelnents in the streets and sidewalks had beenmade Since a former visit. Were it not that a part of the road between this place and that is almost impassable, there would be a much larger trade between the two points. As it is, we counted 200. teams in the city and on the way there.— Steps are being taken by the citizens to have the place incorporated as a borough. The enlargement of their privileges will give them an oppoitunity of ascertaining whether any of their number are willing to serve the public in the capacity of Jus tice of the Peace, Burgess and Town Councilmen. • Tim WEATHER OE THE PRESENT MONTH.—The weather thus far in the month has been very mild, for January. Of the first twenty-four days, there were but nine on which afsix o'clock. a. in., the thermometer indicated a temperature be• low the freezing point and only five on which the mercury was 82 degrees at noon. During the corresponding period In 1861, there were twelve days on which the tem perature was below 82 degrees, most of them far below, one being down to zero. Tne lowest marking of the thermometer during th present month was 12 degrees above zero. After the 14th of January, up to the close of the month, there was a change from very cold to only moder ately so, though it was cold?r than we have felt it for"the most part since the first instant. One writer says: Just at daybreak on Sunday morning, the 19th of January, sharp firing com menced with the pickets; the long toll beat in the Indiana 10th, arid they formed in instantly and marched to the support of their pickets. The 10th and Kinney's battery were close !ogether, and a halt a mile in advance of everything. The bat tery got ready for action on the instant, and awaited orders. By the.way, nerd's battery and Wetmore's four gun battery were both in park, one on each side of Kinney'e battery. The Ist Ten nessee was about a quarter of a mile in the rear of these batteries, in the woods. The 4th Kentucky, Colonel Fry, was the next regiment on the road, half a mile in the rear of the batteries; it was forming as I ran past, getting to my own regiment, (for I slept in Kinney's battery); the 2d Ten. neasee another quarter of a mile in the rear of the 4*.h Kentucky. By this time the cavalry were running their horses all over the country, in every direction, except towards the firing, whicn still continued at intervals. Tae 2d was just getting break. test, ant same sing. it to he only picket tight, kept on co , king and eating, though very few had e,o..eu anything when the column of 4.,ur force appeared coming on in our rear. Lieutenant Colonel Trewhit promptly gut u, into line and douule qulcked us into the road ahead of the ad vancing column; the 4th Kentucky had gone when we reached their encampment. The firing still continued, and very brisk ly; we kept on at double quick, all hoping and believing that we would have a chance to smell burnt powder. But when op. posite the encampment of 10. h Indiana, up rode the Colonel, and haltei us for further orders; we all thought—if we didn't say it—d—n further orders. The 10th Indiana went into the woods about a quarter of a mile iu advance of their tents, to the support of their picket., and bravely did they support them, too, i for over half an" hour, against the whole force led against them; and never retreated a step, nor give an Ina of ground, until nearly surrounded by overwhelming nume bers; then, to save themselves from being entirely sarrouded, they unwillingly gave way. Here was a crisis; and yell on yell went up from the lantern jawed Secession• ists; they thought the day was all their own. But, happily, any disastrous con. sequence was prevented by the arrival of the 4th Kentucky and the Orb Ohio, to the support of the gallant 10. h. Again our men made a stand; now there was fighting in good earnest, and the 2d Min. nesota joined in with the 10th and the 4th and the 9th Ohio. Volley after volley rat tled in quick succession, and sometimes it seemed as though there was only one con tinuous volley, interrupted now and then by the growling of the "fellow pups," which had been brought to bear on th e enemy; and when they once commenced, they distributed tteir favors freely in all directions, in the shape of shot and shell• and, gentlemen, excuse me from being the recipient of any such favors. There were only two or three shots from cannon fired by the enemy, and they were either badly aimed or the pieces were out of range, for the shot did not disturb anybody. Once they threw a shell into the air, which burst when some four or five hundred loot high. No damage was done by it, and their artillery seemed to be of no use to them whatever, while, on the contrary, ours seemed to be of immense use to us; and it was most ably and effectively handled.— After a little more than two hours of hard flghting,a moat tremendous volley of mus ketry followed by a ringing shout from our aide, seemed to have decided the bat tle in our favor, for from that time, al. though firing was kept up at intervals, the secessionists, whipped and cowed began their retreat, which in about twenty min, I utes more became a Wel rout; and from I the indications along the road which we c afterwards passed over, the flight appear. I ed to have been a regular race from that I point back to their int renchmerits, to see who could get there firat, surf the devil • take the hindmost. All the credit and honor of this battle. is due to the 10th Indiana, the Bth Ohio the 4th Kentuaky and 2d Minnesota. For they did all the teiting, as it were, single.
