inga widow woman named Mrs, Lewis,
reeling in the Sixth Ward, who earns a
scanty support for her family by washing,
was lining a lamp with oil, without having
ettinguisned the flame, when the escaping
i vapor caught fire, and an explosion fel
lowed, scattering the burning fluid over
her hands, arms and neck. She screamed
for help, which was speedily rendered by a
colored man but the fire was not exttn•
gabbed until her hands and neck had been
badly burnt. Her hands were shockingly
burnt in putting out the fire, a portion of
the skin and several of the nails having
peeled off.

the train in the vicinity of Spruce Creek,

hand. He fell under the train, and had
one of the legs crushed, that it had to be
amputated.
Hosea DItOWNED. —A horse, belonging
to a man named O'Hare, residing on
Pennsylvania avenue, was drowned in the
Monongahela river yesterday, near the
foot of Noss street. He was attached to a
coal wagon, and being left unattended,
took fright and ran into the river. The i

-SHITS. —On motion, fir. Wilson's bill
to complete the defences at Washington,
was taken up, and the amendment of the
House agreed to. Mr. Wilson offered •
new section repealing the act allowing
the discharge of miners, and providing
that no persons hereafter be mustered into
service under eighteen years of age, but
the oath of enlistment shall be conclusive
as to age.
On motion of Mr. Wade, of Ohio, the
bill authorizing the Secretary of War to
appoint two Assistant Secretaries of War,
was taken up.
Mr. Wilson offered an amendment as a
substitute, to wit, that the President, with
the consent of the Senate, shall appoint
two additional Atsistant Secretaries of
War, at a salary of $3OOO each, the aloe
to last•for on , year.
The amendment was agreed to and the
bill passed.
The report of the Committee of the Joe
dietary on the resolution to expel Mr.
Bright was then taken up
Messrs • Sumner and Lane advocated the
passage of the resolution.
Mr. Bright made a reply in defence of
himself, asserting that when he wrote the
letter to Davis he had no ilea of war re
sulting from the fanaticism of the Aboli
tionists and the mad folly of the South.
The Senate then adjourned.
From Santa Fe.
8./asses CITY, Jan. 20.—The Santa Fe
mail, with dattts to the 7th, arrived.
The express from Mealla arrived at San
ta lee on the evening of the 4th, says that
1600 Texans, with 7 pieces of artillery, are
marching on Fort Craig, and were within
thirty miles of that poet. The scouts from
the fort had been driven in, and a severe
battle was expected, as the Texans were
fighting principally for food. Gov, Con.
nelly had called out the entire military.
A later express on the night of the sth
says that the enemy had retrehted without
an attack. It is not known whether Col.
Canby intends to follow him or not. The
scouts from Pecote had not arrived when
the. mail left Col. Canby has 1000 revs,
tars and 1500 volunteers and militia in hie I,
command, All is excitement at Santa lee,
and martial law had been declared in this •
district, The through passengers are Col.
Street, J. Howe Watts and John Owynne.

in spite of their fatigue. The tenor of all
official dispatches go to show that the affair
resulted in the most brilliant victory of the
war. It is said that no prominent officer
was killod on our side. Gen Schoepff was
unable to cut -, ff the retreat, owirg to the
bluffy character of the country and the
obstruction of all the roads by felled tim
bar.

Mr. Morrill, of Vt . moved to recommit
the , bill to the Post Office Committee, with
instructicns to report one increasing the
postage from 3 to 5 cents. This was Voted
down together with the motion of Mr.
Blair.
Mr. Colfax reported the substitute for
the bill referred In his - pooch, which was
disagreed to, one ct the sections proposing
a tax on telegrams.
The original bill being before the House
for final act'on, Mr. Harris moved to lay
it on the table. Carried by a vote of 76
against 60.

dent to appoint two additional Assistant
Secretaries of War, with a salary of $2OOO
