The Southern papers jay about it, although if. a landing has been made, news ought to have!resehed Richmond and Norfolk be. fort this. No anxiety is felt, however, on the shbject, although It is highly probable that the first news from the Expedition will be, received at this point; yet, as General Burnside's dispatehEs would be sent to 'Washington direct, they might possibly reach their destination earlier if sent via Annopolls, since they might have to wait here nearly a whole day for the Baltimore boat. Captain Mendenhall, of the Fourth ar tillery, leaves bo.night to join his comps. ny, which is now in Lou'sville, Kentucky. He has been at this post two years and a halt, and has lately been busy drilling new batteries' just organized here. The wounded prisoners who came down from Richmond the other day and were taken to the hospital, are all doing as well as could be expected. None are thought to be in a dangerous condition, and a few have so fax recovered that they will be sent North by to.night's boat. Tao troops on board the Constitution were disembarked this morning, and marched and counter•marohed up and down the beach, within certain limits fixed by General Wool, nearly all day.— They have been on board more than two week, and enjoyed much the pleasure of stretching their limbs. They wore favored with summer weather. Meanwhile the Constitution underwent a thorough cleans. ing, which was much needed. Nothing is known of the destination of the vessel, cr the time when she sail.. No orders have been received on the subject. General Butler is expected here to personally order her sailing. A. flag of truce went to Craney Island this morning under command of Lieut. Clinton, of Gen. Wool's stall. The boat brought back the Captain and crew of the ship York, of Dublin, Captain Whalen, from Valencia for Lewistown, which was wrecked near Swanton, N. C., a week since. S ELECT TALE. B. UMBER, ARTIST Br BUSTIL 171112'08U ViCITOIL [Continued from yesterday,l This news revived my courage, which bad weakened at the sight of;two halves of my coat, which I had pled off and thrown upon the bed. /Where will we have it flantboge l'" "Put that boa upon the iied; we can sit upon either sides. Here it comes, at last." Maybe the waiter had observed that artists were queer people, for he arrang. od our repast in good styli upon the pine box, while the dignityo his nose was undisturbed by the faintest hint of a turn-up. Politer, than hie:betters, he did not even stare, until hi was going out, when the canvas upon the easel at tracted him so proftinudlc that /e re mained profoundly rooted before it. "I say, sir, did you get up them 'ere chickens ? they're done to attire." Although this remark savored some , what of Me ,prefessiNl, I was pleased by his honest praise: - - "Yes," I answered, "I painted them." "What might the price be, now, of the lot? There 's seven in all, countin' that 'on as has his head hid in the grass." Gamboge and I looked qt each -ether. "I might take ten dollars for the pic ture, from a person not able to give more," I said, presently. , "W hew 1" whistled he, "that's more 'an the live ones 'd be,' and he walked towads the door. "But these 'll last longer; won't have to cook 'em to keep 'em," and be walked back again. "There 's some fellers as fumes an -mals; but birds was tillers to itty liking— and quail chickens above all!" He laid a gold eagle upon the box by my side, and took the...little bit of canvas from the easel. I heard him chucking to the birds as he went through the hall. . "Which shall it be, coat or pants loges ? I cannot get both." "Coat, I suppose, from the looks of these remnants. But I must go. rn call for you to-morrow, a little before twelve.' Gamboge went away, and I was left with a leas pleasing task than the one of beginning my new sketch. I had decided difierently from ,Gamboge; I had seen that the coat could be mended, so that, in a darkened room, it might not be particularly noticeable; and with ten dollars I could get not only a new pair of pantaloons, but boots also; and I now for the first time reflected that my studio slippers would not Answer for making a morning oail. I could not even go out to get these new articles until the coat was mended. The next two hours were given up to the most troublesome and tedious cf tasks, bat I was kept from ill temper by the busy habit of my mind. The "coming even' which was casting its shadows before, in the shape of my present irksome em ployment, figured in the foreground of all my dreams. I had heard so much of Miss Follett, through my friend, that I was eager to meet her. She was beautiful, gifted, and a woman. Though rich, she was intelligent; though an amateur, the artist did not redieule her. Gamboge, I knew, thaught more of her than any other lady; he respected her opinions, admired her tastes, and adored her beauty. More than all, he did not feel galled, by her patronage. And she had selected my little picture for special commendation—had inquired after the artist—had expressed a wish to own it! My heart beat, loudly. and sweetly, the time, ana I began to sing a Spanish song. I had nothing but black linen thread to sew with, and that tangles and snarls so, it is enough to upset the serenity of a woman. The eye broke out of my last needle just as I was about to fasten :the concluding stitches, leaving me in some unpleas ant doubts as to the stability of my work. However, it looked tolerably, and I surveyed it with cloudy satisfaction, comforting myself with the memory of what Gamboge had said about the par lors, and hoping they would be as dim as one of his own distances. I occupied myself during the after noon, with a fancy sketch of Miss Fol- lett. Curiously enough, Gamboge had never described her; so I drew her ac cording to my own liking—tall, majes tic, with a low, -white forehead, black hair, piercing eyes, and a superb bust. In the evening, I went out and made my purchases, and got my clean shirt from the washerwoman in the next street "That ! Wu down your back cobs ; show confoundedly," said Gamboge, when he cawed for me the next morn- - ng. aaw that he began to feel nervous about .presenting• , me, and my Sown pride took fire. " Look here ! look at me !" said I, ‘. "did poi ever know me to flinch from an undertaking?" He surveyed my six feet of height, my cool air and impenetrable eyes. "Comer *long then; you can make your own way.' Miss Follett's footman looked so well dressed when he opened the door to us that I felt momentarily abashed. The mows were somewhat shadowy, i but tome they seemed abiost glaring, as I entered and found them just com fortably thronged, 000 l and perftuned, the silence disturbed, not driven out, by subdued voices. When Gamboge spoke my name; Miss Follett smiled her recognition of it; af ier addressing a few words to as, SOMA one ehfc came in, and we stepped; back. I could look at her whilst she , talked „to others. Instead of being tall invade she was slender! and • face was fair "4-2v,y4, voice incomparably sweet. She looked more as if she had , been brought op by • angels, than in a fashionable boarding school. She may, or may not lave been dressed in the Mode; I only recall , that ; her raiment was white and, float. . ing, clasped at the throat with en opal brooch. Immediately a deep sadness took, possession of me; I did not ana lyze it;,l felt here the presence of wealth, luxury, art, taste, beauty, ail things so agreeable to the artist-soul, and I recalled my lonely attic, bare . un furnished; rade, Body, and soul lznd flonrishe&welr up= plain fare seatooed with; hope; but now; hope died, out, and I felt all my • privations crushingly. All this ' perhaps, was in the gaze which Ifited unconsciously upon my hostess; for when her eyes met mine, after a time, they were arrested for a moment. I saw that the pitied me. "You know none of my friends," said she, in a low voce, owning up to me, "except Gamboge. Will you not look at these engravings? they belong to the Turner Gallery. Are they nol exquisite?". 1 followed her to the table and bent to admire them Rip ' I stood upright, and made some wan dering reply: My back was to the window, and I could only think of my coat. I heard persona suppressing laughter, who were standing behind me. "You do not like engravings ? Here is a new. pi &arc; it was hung yesterday; but it seems to me to require more light.
