Many of our readers will remember with

novel, entitled "The Collegians," and .s
admirably arranged wan regard •to stage

Killarney. Hardness Uregan, son of a
mother of high birth but poor in purse,
who desires loin to marry his cousin Ann
Chtile, an heiress, lalis in.love with and
secretly marries Eily O'Conncir,o/0 Colleen
B.wn. Corrigan, a lawyer who holds mon

foreclose (as he sees no hope of liardress,
marrying.Ann) . untess the widow OrLgan

faintly refuses. Ann Chute is in love with
one Daly, friend of Hardress, and Daddy

his cousin, and she is about to comply,
when she is prevented by Myles of the

swear, over her mother's grave, she will
never give the pa er up. Daddy

WWI'S CALL f—The question ce what
company in this State first responded to
the call for volunteers is being agitated in
the Eastern papers. The honor was first
claimed by the Ringgold Artillery, of
Reading, but it now seems that the Logan
Guards, Capt. John B. Selhelmer, are en-.
titled to that honor. The company recaiv.
ed orders to proceed to Harri, burg, on the
16th of April, and were ready to leave by
nine o'clock that night, but by some' mis
management did not - get oft until (our
o'clock nest morning, arriving at. Harris.
burg at Eli, one hour before any other
company, though four arrived FOO2l after.
They were all sworn in together; and on
the morn - ng of the 18th the five com
panies left Harrisburg for Wastongton
city. During their passage through Bal
timore, and their entrance into Washing
ton, the Logan Guards had the right, and
were the first company to report them.
salves for duty to the Ajutant General
It is but just, therefore, that the credit
should fall on those who deserve it—the
gallant Logan Guards, Captain John B.

our streets every day. S ,me of those are,
no doubt, hauling to and from the refiner ,

Perhaps not truly, for her father , eyes
shone as he put the last questiot, and
knowing the violence of his wrath,-she

on the unlucky bridegroom. t-
"I shall see you again preeetly,"
said the father. He walked to dap door,
and, taking the key, went outsnd lock
ed her in. He had not far tOgo.—
Manley had heard voices, and yeti cbm
hag up, when he encountered the man
whom, of all men living, he dreaded to
-meet.
"Are you the fellow who has stolen
my daughter 7" asked the Colonel.—
Now, whatever bravery Manley had, it
did not nerve him to look mlily on
threatening muzzles, or to be peeful
in anticipation of having his b• bro.
ken. He had a theoretical nei. senti
mental courage, very• well in AO way,
inasmuch as it has austifined smile very

Manley, feeling an uniertaintyl in his

heart, answered in words that iseemed
to have, the palsy :

"Yes, sir—that is, I uarm' her--
by her consent. She .ininrisiras not

Oh ' Not stolen. N - I want
to know about the
what was done—all about it."
Mr. Manley was not a man with a
legal education, or he would have
known better than to admit away his
ease. In fact he had a foolish sort of
frankness thesis highly commended in
story-books, bat is very bad policy, es
pecially in dealing with an antagonist
like Colonel Harwell. So, he told what
hand happened, not omitting the mend
ing of the second-hand license. A gleam
of delight lighted up the Colonel's iron
face when he heard that.
"Caught in your own trap,-you fool !"
he exclaimed. "The marriage is not
legal—not worth so much as continent
al currency—void from the beginning.
My daughter is not your wife. Go
home you fool 1 Perhaps you can make
a wagon-wheel. Think yourself lucky
that I leave you with u whole skin."
Manley was aroused by the taunts,
and said something about appealing to
the daughter. The Colonel unlocked
the door, and•standing on the threshold
to keep the unmarried couple apart,
said
"My daughter, you:have been impos
ed upon, deceived, betrayed. The
nmrri,ge W4B, a.. sham—it gives you
neither thc Nights nor the protection of
a wife. Now go home with me. I
only ask you to stay three weeks. If
at the-end ; of that time you wish to
marry this to il, you'Whall have an hon
orable wedding at my home. But I
don't believe that, possessing your sen
ses, you will marry such a mean-spirited
fellow as he has shown himself."
Here Cockburn interrupted from the
stairway : "If you are fool enough to
agree to that, Manley, then you are a
mean spirited follow, and you don't de
serve to have her."
" Who is this pitching in with his
cook-a.cloodle.do 7" inquired the Colo
