AM ENGLISH STORY
[coimjnrxD from oca last.J
Overcome, then, by the terror of she
knew not what, Kaehel fell into i hat
«woom in which she was found by the
peonle of the inn.
Suoh was the statement of the half
distraoted mother on the examination
of Anna, whose innocence of tho mur
der of her child she declared herself as
thoroughly satisfied of as of the exist
ence of Heaven.
s *r Kalph Heritage was sent for, and
tfie shook so completely unmanned him
that, although filling the office of High
Sheriff of the county, he was compell
ed to go home, where he took his bed
from which it did not seem probable he
would rise agaiii.
Several of tho seniors of the bar had
shrunk from undertaking the defense ol
Anna Heritage, and the ease was
brought to me. I took it, and from the
moment I did so I felt a conviction that
there was some fearful mystery in it
which, unless elucidut.d, would leave
the youthful aocused to be judicially
murdered. J
And bo I thought and pondered over
the affair until I was afraid my mind
would get into some abnormal oondition
and I would be unable to do what hu
man means could do for Anna Heri-
I Baw her but onee before the trial.
. striil neTer forget the manner ’in
which she looked at me as she gently
shook her he-id, saying :
“They will kill me, sir, but Heaven
Knows lam innocent! If my death
would bring back to poor Rachel her
boy (here she burst into tears) I should
be willing to die; but as it is, 1 am very
very young to be murdered !
1 could say but little, I pressed both
her hands in mine, and on.y gasped out
some common-place expressions of hope
ful consolation, and then left her.
The case was fearfully staong agaiust
her There was but one supposition in
her favor.
The shadow—the phantom like form
seen by the mother— who was he ? Was
it this Mr. Brown ? I hunted him up
1 employed people to dog and watch
him. It came to lie was a
commercial traveler for a house in Mar
seilles, and was engaged in trying to do
business at Northampton.
Several old counsei, to whom I spoke
of the case, were'of the opinion that the
shadow seen by Rachel, was either m,
shadow at all, or the work of her imaM
uation, or the veritable shadow of some
of the people of the inn, who, alarmed
at her cues, were hastening to her room.
And goat length the morning of the
trial came, and full ol anxiety as 1 was. it
came as a positive relief to me. The
then Lord Chief Baron of the Exche
quer presided. He was a calm, enli-ht
ened judge, who never permitted his own
prejudices— as some of his successors
have done—to warp either law or jus
tice; and oome what might of the mat
ter, I knew that the young prisoner
would have a fair trial.
The court was crowded to exoess.
A positive disturbance at the door
hindered the commencement of the
day’s proceedings for a full half an
hour, and was only quelled by force.
The Attorney-General had oome
down from London to prosecute on be
half of the crown; and the counsels’
seats were so closely packed that no
one could stir, except those engaged in
the case.
The jury looked grave and half
frightened. The Judge looked pale
and more serious than usual; and as
for me, I felt sick at heart, and when
the uneasy kind of a hush that perva
ded the court let me know that Anna
Heritage was placed at the bar, it was
semo few moments before I could
muster up courage to look at her. How
pale, how wan, and yet how beautiful
she looked !
Her fair hair was dressed in the
most simple style possible, and she wore
a. dress of gray silk; which fitted close
ly around the neck, terminating in a
narrow plaited frill. Her lip, trem
bled, and her gentle eyes seemed tc
shrink behind their abundant lashes as
she met the gaze of friend and foe in
that crowded court—that is, if one so
young, so fair, and so innocent, could
have a foe.
I could see the judge taking a long
look at her from beneath his bent-down
brows, and then he rested his head on
bis hands and appeared in deep thought
I he Attorney-General tossed a scrap of
paper over the table to me. It con
tained these words :
“Tho witness Brown has absconded •
make what use ot the fact you can ” *
I nodded gratefully, and felt that he
would only just do his duty against the
prisoner.
i £ h u e V h " re 1 WM a Rtran ge half-sigh,
half-hush all through the auditory, and
a lady in deep mourning came into the
court. It was the bereaved mother,
hue went direct to the front of the
dock where her sister >as arraigned
on so dreadful a charge, and leaned over
the front of i t with both arms extend
ea, as she cried:
“Dear, dear Anna, God bless you!
and prove your innocence, as I feel it.”*
Anna was overcome by this, and
she burst into a passion of sobs and
tears The sisters oould only inter
lace their arms together, and there they
remained for some moments, until the
Judge said, in a deep, sad voice :
ceed " 1S mH3t DOt be ‘ Proceed > P ro '
The Clerk of Arraigns, in a high,
oracked, indifferent voice, proceeded to
read the indictment, and Rachel sat
d ?™\ 18 8 ° hair tfaat one had
plaoed for her just beneath the dock
Poor Anna’s fortitude i eemed to have
wholly g i V e n aW ay. Her fair face was
hidden in her hands, and rested on the
front of the bar. It was a fashion
to place a row of aromatic herbs
on the bar before the prisoner in
those days,and among them she leaned;
and Borne of them, watered by hei
tears, fell upon her “ister's lap as she
sat beneath.
Then came the question, "Prisoner
at the bar do you plead guilty or not
guilty to the present indictment ?”
Anna did not stir. The poor girl
had not heard the question ; but her I
sister rose, and in a mild clear voice
said : ’
"She is not guilty, sirs. He was my
little one. lie is in Heaven now, and
ii you take her life, she will go to him
sooner than 1, and be happy. She
is not guilty, sirs.”
The governor of the jail had by
this time jogged Anna by the arm, and
whispered to her, when she looked up
hastily and said, “0, no, a thousand
times no I”
"The plea is Not Guilty,” said the
udge, “ao eater it.”
