How beautifu'ly this patriotic letter
of the old hero oontraats with the thous
and fanatic and impractical,le effusions
we sec every day cmenating from our
blatent politicians. Gen. Scott quietly
and easily shows that Great Britain has
no reason to be dissatisfied with our gov
ernment seizing the rebel embassadors,
according to her own examples and
teaching. Our politicians desire nothing
but a fight with England; and fearful
that we m y not then be sufficiently en
gaged, they Wish France to interfere so
that we can chastise them both and
crush the rebellion all at the same time.
en. Scott, a soldier of established rep
utation, requires peace; our members of
Congress, and others who are anxious to
go here, are beut on war-not actual
hostilities, but an opportunity to talk of
It. True valor is always modest the
counterfeit makes up for its deficienov
by additional bluster. We a-e surprio-d
that we have not had a town meeting
called here before this in order to give
our fussy patriots an opportunity of be
ing heard upon the question of -‘, ln i, n .
pending war with England "

mg this modest petition, we do not see
that Mr. Wade offered any observations

what surprised. It js true that the path

should not abandon him on that account-
Until this session no one was louder in

Has the change of public sentiment in
his State, which elected a Union Gover

His successor is to be chosen this winter,
which may account for his moderation.
If this be so it serves to show that the

will not be half so unreasonable as many
suppose from the tone of her journals.
