TIIRSDAY MORNING
OIM"E" MAT TM RS
A Cot.oaxn Sot STannisn.—On Satur•
day evening a colored boy named George
Butler was paesing up Wylie street, when,
on turning the corner of .I., , gan street, he
was attacked by three boys, who threw
stones at him. He turned on them, knock
ed two down, kicked the third and in the
melee received a severe stab in the left
side. Butler was able to walk to his home
on Third street, Second Ward, where 1.4
McCook examined and dressed his wound.
The knife had evidently been aimed at h 4
heart, but striking a rib, glanced off, tak,.
ing a piece out of the side. The wound ie
not dangerous. Butler did not know hie
assailants,
GUNS PROVED —on Saturday a large
number of the ruled twelve pounders mad
in this city were taken up to the proving
ground, and tested, all of them passing
c:ose examination. Tho guns have a bore
of the same calibre as the regular twelve
pound round shot, but throw an elonga
ted shell weighing some 20 pounds. For
proof, however, these guns are filled up
with lead to 36 pounds, and fired several
rounds with heavy charges. An order f, , r
an additional number of the heavy 13 inn
mortars has been received and will be vig.
orously prosecuted at the Fort Pitt Works,
Several thousand shells are also to bo
mediately east. ..-Disr a telt
A ROUNDHEAD KILLED.—One of the

Regiment, while on guard
near a pile of 10 inch bombshells, amused
himself by sticking his bayonet into the
Dise of one of them. The friction caused
the shell to explode, whereby the soldier
was so frightf4lly lacerated that he died
in two hours afterwards. A comrade, who
was standir 4 by, had his kneeopan shatter..
dd. and a third soldier had a large gash
inflicted on hi; neck-.
DISORDERLY Housk.--LEilen Gift and
two '•boarders" in her house on Cherry
Alley were bolorn "the Mayor yesterday,
charged by 9, Labadau, who occupies the
upper rooms of the house, with keeping a
disorderly bawdy house. They were re-
leased on a promise to leave the house
within a week and paving the costs.
Oct is now being shipped from the
flowing well un Dunkard creek, recently
opened by Church, Hare & Co., on the
Maples farm. The oil flows quite rapidly,
and other wells are being sunk in the vi
cinity.
THE Crescent Mills, at Wheeling
which have been suspended for some time,
are now in full blast. The contractors
have a heavy contract for malting railroad
iron for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
Stilomm..—On Tuesday last David De
yore, of Elizibelli township, committed
suicide by taking arsenic. The proper
antidote was administered by Dr. W. H.
King, but too late to be of avail, the poise
on already having sealed hi. fate. Tills is
a lamentable case, as Mr. Devore was
very worthy man, kind in his family and
respected by all who knew him, but un
fortunately addicted to drinking, and the
E „ . ^.t was committed under aberration of
mi t ,•4l, brought on by a recent excess of
strong' drink.

CAVALRY FIELD Szavicx.—Among the
military works published by J. B
Cott St Co., we have been furnished with
"Regulations and Instructions for th
Field Service of the United States Cavalry
in time of War." This book is written by
Maj. Gan. Geo. B. McClellan, unquestion.
able authority. and will supply a desidera
tum. It contains numeroas diagrams and
full instructions for picket and patrol
duty, with the signals and calla now in use
and a drill for the use of cavalry as skir
mishers, mounted or dismounted. The
v t ,:lue of such a work, on such authority, is
ap na ,-ent to all and it must meet with an
exten s ice demand. It is for sale here by

CoLny's PATiLVT CLOTHES WRINGER.
—We have examih, - )d and seen in opera
tion' Colby's Patent Improved Clothes
Wringer, and are full,' convinced that it
is one of the most useful inventions of its
class ever offered here, It combines nu
merous advantages, among- which are
cheapness, lightness, compact./ess. ease of
()Oration, simplicity, strength, dur a :bility,
and the fact that it secures itself firmly to
the tub without any fastening. It saves
time, strength, clothes and money and can
be used by any man, boy or girl, who
could not wring clothes by hand. It makes
waling more easy, helping to cleanse the
clothes and leaves them in better condition
to dry. In fact it is the best article of the
description we have seen and must come
into general use. For address of patentee
we refer to the advertisement elsewhere.
Gorlsa - rOR JANUARY.—The first num
ber of Godey for the new year is a brit..
liant one, containing new and attractive
features. The publisher promises to make
Ole magazine equal in everything,throngh
out 1812, to the initial number. If he
keeps this promise, as he has always done
heretofore, Godey's Lady's Book will be
more popular than ever. Henry Miner,
Fiftii street, has the number for sale,
Scr.rarztric AlikaicAs.—The current
number of this valuable journal should , be
in the hands of every mochanic, as it con
tains designs and descriptions which must
benefit every one. To the army officer it
will be attractive, conta ning as it does a
description, illustrated, of Gar ban te's
seat and hank tent, which gives the sol.
diers comfortable sleeping quarters. Get
the number and read it carefully.
THERE are four regiments now at Camp
Curtin, viz: Cols. Wilson's, Maxwell's
Meredith's and Campbell's.

Our Victory in East Tennessee
II
I RD'S POLN T, —On last Friday
The rebel steamer Grampus took a le.der,.l
lumber boat, anchored above, with 175,000
feet of lumber, end took it to Columbal.
The Federal troops left Cairo and Pa
ductth in large numbers, and are supposed
to be going to New Madrid, to cut off Jell
Thompson.
The Memphis Avalanche confirms hn
report of a Federal victory in Morrietlam,
East Tennessee, and thinks Msjor Gen
eral Crittenden Will overcome the Union
forces.
It is rumored at Memphis that the Fed.
Orals have become alarmed for the safety
of St Louis, and that Cairo and Paducah
are being evacuated by the Federal troops,
who are going to 6t,. I...auS with all !wash.
Me dispatch.
The New Orleans Bulletin says the Fed
orals captured two rebel steamboats, sup
posed to bathe Henry Lewis and the Wat,
son, and that the California escaped by
throwing overboard part of her cargo, and
40 head of cattle.
The Charleston Mercury says General
Ripley ordered every po•: n d of cotton
likely to fall into the hands of the enemy
to be burned.
The Savannah Republican says the Sum.
ter wed not captures, but wrecked off Trin.
idad Coast.

Important Army Order.
WASHINGTON, December _Genera,
Army Order 10 , 1 invites the attentdan of
the otileers of the army to the loilowing,in
addition to the orders of the Secretary of
War, embraced in the regulations for the
recruiting service: First. The large nuu,
ber of enlisted men diseharged on certifi
cates of disability has attracted the notice
of the Generalein.Chiet, and as it is a
special duty to render the rank and file of
the army as effective as possible, the atten.
tion of superintendents and•other officers
concerned, either with the enlistment of
men or their discharge on account of disa.
bility,is directed to the judiciou3 discharge
of their respective duties. The evidence
is abundant, attested by the records of the
Adjutant General's office, that many men
have been enlisted who were unfit for ser
vice prier to the or at the date of
merit. It should be borne in mind that the
law provides fur the enlistment of etfece
Me, able-bodied men, and if any officer
shell enlist any person contrary to the
true intent and meaning of the law, it is
further provided that for every offence-he
shall forfeit and pay the amount of the
bounty and clothing which the person so
recruited may have received from the pub..
lie, to be deducted from the pay and emu,
laments 01 such officer. With this object
in view. paragraphs 9eo and OSI of the Re
vised Ret,ulations mutt be strictly con ,
formed with. A sense of duty to the pub
lic will cause an enforcement of the laws
and regulations governing the service, and
these must be the guidance of the etlicers
obtaining recruits, Officers cannot be too
circumspect in the discharge of their du.
ties, and they are called upon to comply
strictly with all the regulations upple_abie
to the subject.
Second. As to minors, every precaution
should be Leseu to prevent tceir
rnent, except as provided by the regula
tions. A true record of their age is of the
greatest value. In a curj 'ray of cases the
locruitlng officer may be justified in re.
cord'ng tee age as stated by the person of-
fering to enlist, yet many cases occur in
which he should rely more upon his own
judgment and not on the recruits int, rma
lien, in ascertaining his probable if not his
actual age. In every doubtful case, there
fore, as to the minority or over age of the
men, it becomes the duty of the officer to
judge for himself to a certain extent, and
not, in any case, to accept a recruit, who,
under his anxiety to enlist, manifestly mis•
states his age.
REYMER
Third. It will be observed that the reg
ulations at this time contain no direct
prohibition to enlist married men. In the
regimental service this must be governed
by the want of laundresses for companies,
and in the general service by tho fuperin.
tenders t.
Fourth. It is enjoined on all superior
tondents and other officers, commissioned
and non-commissioned, to conduct the
service with diligence, increasing persona
attention, and economy. By command e
