While some gentlemen of distinction are desirous that General Meigs shall take the field, it is known that the Government. apreciating his eminent qualification for the discharge of the extensive and very important labors devolved upon him, is not inclined to transfer him from the Quart. tormaster General's Department to the performance of other public duties. •Mu:h speculation continues to be in dulged in relation to the Mason and Sit. deli questiou. So far as can be ascertain:, rd, the Minister of her Britanic Majesty's Government has taken no action whatever upon the subject, but will probably await instructions, nor has there been oven an informal conversation between him and, tho proper department concerning it. Those who are intimately acquainted witiC Lurd Lyons believe that in this, as in other matters, he has observed his usual discretion in refraining from premature expressions of opinion. The enemy is apparently at work on a new battery at Possum Hoes, which is far above the others, on Mr. G.terbacitp land. Wn. WCOLLe Ua General Scott's Mission The .13Jaton Courier, alluding to his visit to Europe, "WO hi-lievo that General Scott has taken this summary departure in order to serve his e untry abroad. From his great reputation, both c.vil- and military, his and eminent public service, his ad rancid unguilied patriotism, and the putile familiarity with his name and character it: Europe, he was the fitting person to proceed on such service, and we deubt not that from these very considers Lions he would have more real intluonce in Europe, than any number of diploma. Lists, 1 CHAMPION DANCE BETWEEN TWO PADUCAH CONTRABANS. The following is an extract from a private letter dated PADUCAH, Nov. 12. My flute is getting to be quite an in stitution in the camp, and, in the long evenings, I am very cften called on by some squad or other to help them pass the time round their fire, or to furnish music for them to dance to by moon., light. We have quite a %Ober of "eentiabands" in camp--cooks papers' servants, etc. Well, last night I got out the flute, and commenced playing, when presently one of them, a newly, arrived and perfectly green country darkey, stole up to the door of the tent to listen. A lot of the boys found him there and nothing would do them but he must dance. So I played up a live ly tune, and ho struck out,—and such dancing ! I never saw the like. For a while an irregular shuffling of the legs and feet, without time or step ; then suddenly falling on his knees ; then sitting down, patting the ground with his hands, and butting it with his head; then rolling over on his back and scrambling up on his feet, and so on over again, getting more and more ex cited, until it seemed he never intend ed to sten. In the meantime Ander. son, another of our contrabands, had come up, and Was perfectly horrified at such dancing,—he couldn't rest satisp. lied until he had shown what he could do. So two or three of the boys jerked the first out of the ring, and Anderson commenced. He is really a fine dam, cor, and put in some beautiful steps, which so excited the admiration and envy of the first that he couldn't be re strained from imitating them occassion ally, breaking into the ring in spite of the boys. They let him have his own way, and then followed such a scene as was never witnessed in-a minstrel hall. his efforts to keep up with Anderson were so extravagant and ludicrous that the whole company was in a roar, and I had to stop playing and laugh with the rest. The darkeys were too excited, however, to notice this, and kept on dancing. until "Greeney," in a wild at tempt to execute some sort of a double shuffle, slipped and fell all in a heap, and was dragged out by the boys. An derson was satisfied with his triumph, and left, while the crowd arranged themselves in sets for a cotillion. And so ended the most uproarious evening I have yet spent in camp. SMITH. PARK 8s CO.
