IJ..OBIt,BBj}iSL Out rag kb in Virginia.
—A Union man named James Duncan is
now in the city, with his wife and no
means oTsubsistence, endeavoring to reach
Cincinnati. He was a resident ol Culpep.
per, Va., where he hud lived eight years.
About five weeks since his house was visi
ted by.a.band of rebels, who stolo from
him eight oows, four horses, his bedding,
dothingamd all the money and provisions
In the : house, obliging him to fly with bis
wife for safety. His two children had
been seitt to Cincinnati some time before.
He informs us that the houses of many
Union men In the vicinity were plundered
and burned and hundreds of them pressed
into the service'of the Confederate States;
that there is no crop within fifty miles of
Oulpepper(in Virginia) that will be saved,
the country having been completely de
vastated. He is left penniless and is much
in need of aaisstsnce.
The Wheeling papers say that one night
last week, in'Lewis county, no less than
five Union men were killed by roving
bandi of rebels, in the vicinity of Weston.
Their names are William Brake, OVVen
Mu Ivy, Porter Arnold, Wm. Blair and
another. Arnold was a secessionist last
spring, and ran away to Ihe rebel army.
He subsequently returned and made pro
fesaionß of loyalty, for which, it appears,
Mb life was taken. Great excitement pre
vails in Lewis and the adjoining counties,
and the Union men are fleeing from the
neighborhood as best they can, taking
with them what little effecu have been

Not Paid Off — Colonel Rippey has
written the following, contradicting the
rumor that his regiment has been paid off:
Headquarters Cist Kkuimrnt. P. V. \
tipring Bank, Nov. 8, 18(11. /
Mr Editor:— Several members of this
regiment having reported that relief had
been withheld from their families, because
they had been paid off’ and refused to send
money home, bo good enough to let mo
Siy through your paper that if such report 1
has been raised it is entirely erroneous.—
Not an officer or Boldier in the regiment
has yet, directly or indirectly, received a
cent from government. We expect soon
to be paid off, though 1 have as yet receiv*
ed no official notification to that effect.—
Still, I do not doubt that the order to mus
ter in the men was made with this view.
Yours, respectfully, O. H. Rippky.

on ‘-Apocalpytic Foreshadowings of Aineri

evening, under the auspices of the Young
Men’s Mercantile Library Association, to
a lull audience, certainly one of the most
intelligent we have ever seen gathered in
this city. The subject, a moat engrossing
one, was admirably treated by tbn lecturer,
who was listened to with profound attan-
tion. The seernd lecture, which will
have particular reference to the presont
rebellion as viewed by the light of- proph-
ecy, will be delivered to-morrow evening
and we are sure it will attract quite as
m ich attention as tta it of last evening.

The defeat of the Union forces at Guy.

the part of the inhabitants It seems that
a force of rebel cavalry variously estimat

in the country back of the town. These
proposed, with the assistance of the rebel
inhabitant of Guyandotto, to annihiate the

corsisted of 250 of the Virginia regiment,
and a lew of Ziegler’s Virginia cavalry
It was at ranged between the rebel cavalry

While they were beiog entertained, the
rebel cavalry dashed into the town. Sig

men and women, rushed to &smsand aided
the cavalry in the slaughter.' The federal

for defense, but wore overpowered and bad

the engagement with the cavalry, nearly
all the killed being murdered in the

learning the particulars ot the affair he
ordered the destruction of the town. The
