upon all sides, killing four hundred, taking -
one thousand prisoners. The balance were-'
scattered in ail directions. The Federal
loss is small.

letter received here, dated on the 2otk of
October, on board the U/8. frigate*' Sin
tee, off Gal7aston, oonfirms the’report Of
the capture of the pirate .Qumter. The
writer says she was caughtT.in her own
trap. It seeffis that she nfrstbok one' of
the U. 8. gunboats for a merchant vessel,
and started in pursuit- When the. gun
boat had drawn her out far enough, she
turnpd stnd chased her ashore. Her offit
cerr'and crew are prisoners on board the
