What Pennsylvania has llone
Scarcely more than a month ago it was
said that Pennsylvania had not furnished
more than half her quota of troops under
the act af Congress authorizing the Presi
dent to raise a force of 600,000 men to
crush out this rebellion. This may have
been true so far as related to regiments in
actual service, but in every part of the
State regiments were being formed and
rapidly filled up. It was also authorita
tively stated that drafting was about to be
resorted to for the purpose of compelling
our citizens to enlist so that the number
of men required If us could be put into
the field at once. We do not believe that,
with the knowledge they possessed, such
an idea was ever entertained by our State
authorities. But, whatever may have
been the misgivings of any as to our abili
ty to furnish the quota without compulsion,
Pennsylvania can now present a record
which is a source of pride and gratification
to every loyal citizen of the State. We
furnished twenty.six regiments for the
three months' service, three fourths of
whom, after returning home, re.enlisted
for the war and are now again in the ser
vice of the State. We now have, around
Washington City, at least fifty thousand
men, folly armed and equipped, awaiting
the opportunity to wipe out the disgrace
incurred by a few Pennsylvanians on the
day of the memorable battle at Bull's Run.
The good work has already been com
menced by Col. Geary's mon, who recent
ly acted so nobly as to almost redeem the
honor of Pennsylvania. We have just
sent three thousand good men to defend
the soil of Kentucky from rebel invaders
and we know they will give a good acs
ccount of themselves. In addition to these
fifty-three regiments, we have at least
twenty Wettest:id more men in camp, ready
to march on twenty.four hours' notice, and
several more regiments — organizing, up
(includingthe,twenty.six three months'
regiments) to. the one hundred and sixth
regiment. With such a showing as this
who shall say that Pennsylvania has not
done her duty nobly? = Otir full quota of
men would be seventy-three thousand; we
have these in service or ready whenever
called upon, and are raising more for eon -
tingenciee. Certainly no more could be
desired, yet if the quota allotted to the
State were doubled, we have so much faith
in. the loyalty of Pennsylvania, we feel
well assured that the number would bo
-cheerfully .furnished, .A.t, some future
day we may show what Pennsylvania has
done in furnishing means for the prosecu
tion-et-the war.

The reports about the rebel army being
in full retreat for Manassas, are founded
on conjecture. At least nothing of it is
