DONNA.—About 12 'o'clock en last Wed nesday night the steamer Prim Mons undertook to pass under the suspension bridge at IWheeling, when the smoke stacks came in contact with the structure. The const.quence was that both 01 the stacks were broken oil; and the tope fell with a crash upon the hurricane deck and pilot house, doing considerable damage to the frame work of the latter and frighten ing everybody on board. Cost. Olt..—The late explosions in fac tories where coal oil was being distilled have drawn public attention to the fact, and many persons have begun to doubt the propriety of using the oil in private hous es. There are many persons, not only in the country villages, but in the city, who are not favored with the introduction of gas into their premises, and who are com pelled to resort to other illuininatii,g agents. Coal oil, from its brilliant light, has become a great favorite, and as it has been represented as non explosive, it has been used where burning fluid would not be tolerated. That coal oil is non .explc ive is true, when rightly made, nutwith• standing the late acc'dents from its use In order to furnish a cheap article some manufacturers neglect to complete the clis tillation which separates the benz the explosive substance. When the nil is p:ri fled entirely of the herz le, it is impets,He to cause an explosion, unia.s the e.l be I first brought to a boiling point. Persons I f who use coal oil should be careful to nb tain the pure article; it may cost a tr:fle more, but it will be perfectly safe to use. PENNSYLVANIA. EDUCATIONAL CONVEN • Trori —Hon. Thornsg H. Burrowes, Sts'e Superintendent of C , :nynon Schools, has issued a circular stating that the Conven tion of representatives of the different classes of schools and literary institutions in the State, that was to have taken place on the 21st of last May, but was postponed in consequence of the then recent distur bance of the public peace, has been aga'n called to meet in Harrisburg, on Tw,eds,N, November 26th, 180, at 10 o'clock, a. to. It will continue in session four days, and the object will be the same as that set forth in the former announcement. The order of proceedings and subjects fogrdiecussion will be set forth in the November number of the Pennsylvania School Journal. ANOTHER. ACCIDENT.-A man supposed to belong to Col. Stambaugh's regiment, from Chambersburg, which passed through Harrisburg for the West on Monday even ing last, was found on the Cumberland Valley railroad, near Carlisle, terribly mangled, having been run over by the cars. Nothing was found upon his person to give any clue to his name, etc. His re mains were buried in the county burying. ground. COL. HIRAM HULTZ.—As we aided in giving publicity to certain charges against this gentleman, recently in command of four companies, forming part of a regi ment, quartered at Camp Wilkins, it is an act of simple justice to him to state that ho utterly denies having misappropriated any funds collected for the regiment. He states that ho collected $13:3, of which $72 was expanded for the regiment, leav ing $6l in his bands, which he has handed over to John McClaren, Esq , who will pay it over to any ono authorized to re celve it. He will publish a statement of the amounts received and expended by him. FREIGHT ON THE PENNSYLVANIA FAIL% ROAD.—The pressure of freight to the F.Ofte board is so enormous al present that the Pennsylvania, Erie and Central companies are compelled to refuse large quantities at advanced rater. The Pennsylvania Rail road Company now charges $l,lO freight on a barrel of flour from Cincinnati to Philadelphia, being an advance of 10... On wheat, the charge per 100 pounds has been advanced from 37 to 55c. BCTRLA.I. OB A 'SOLDIER. —The remains of Edward Campbell, a member of the Federal Guards, who died at Alexandria last week, was buried from the residence of his mother, Ledlie Street, Allegheny, OD Friday. His body was escorted by the Park Zouavee to St.. Mary's cemetery, where it was interred with military hon ors. Mrs. Campbell, who is a po , r, hard working woman, has another son in the Federal Guards and three others in the Union army in Western Virginia. THE RAILROAD Tax.—Friday's delphia Ledger says: " A correspondent asks, 'Please be kind enough to inform a subscriber, through the Ledger, when the interest can be collected on the Allegheny county bonds ?' We would willingly oblige this inquirer if we could, but as the subject has puzzled our Courts for several years, and some of the best of the Phila delphia lawyers, we are sure our ignorance of the fact will be excused. The tax payers have not as yet, that we are aware, sign 1- fled a disposition to pay into the county treasury tlgt necessary funds. Possibly when the war is over the subject will be seriotudy considered." Gax& EXPICCTATIoNS.—Tbig thrilling drama, from Dickens last and beet novel, was played at the theatre for the second time on Saturday night to a large and de lighted audience. The piece is well drama tized, that portion which in the novel is obscure until you reach the middle of the hook, being made clear by a prologue. Toe piece was well cast and the characters well rendered. hire. Henderson as young "Pip," Mr. Stewart as Pip at manhood, Maftit as Joe Gargery, Mackay as Worn mick, Mrs. McManus as Miss Havisham, Mies Kate Newton as Estella and Miss Mollie Newton as Mrs. Gargery, "on the rampage," all did admirably, while Mr. Couldock as Abel Magwitch, the convict, was at home as always in these parts. The representation was a success and the drnou ment of the drama gave more general Fatis fa cti on than that of the novel. We are to be favored with a repititton of the piece to-night, with the same cast, and '•One Touch of Nature," in which Mr. Couldock personates Wm. Penn Holden. We expect to see a full house. Brilliant Exploit on the Po- tomac o.:t. 12 —The Navy La partwent this morning received the follow ing despatch. U. S. STEAMER UNION. I OFF .A(4l.'rA CREEK, OCL. 18, 1761. j Sir: I have the hurler to submit the fol., lowing rep.rt for your information: Her ing informed of a large vessel lying on Quantico or Dumfries Creek, and knowing also that a large number of troops was voileeted at that point, with the view of crossing the Pot 'Mac, as was reported to me, I c.mceived it to be my duty to destroy her. With this object in view, I took two launches and my boat and pulled in for the vessel at V I o'clock this morning. One of the launches was commanded by Midship man W. P. Stewart, acc.nnpanied by Mrsters Edwel and Haynes, of the Res cue, and tho other by Acting Master Amos Foster, of the Rl:solute. 1 took with me the pilot of the vessel. He was a Pennsyl vanian. Some litt:e difficulty was at first raped , enced on finding the entrariceto the creek, which Sou will remember is very narrow, but having found it we pulled up the crooked channel within pistol shot of either shore till we discovered the schooner. She was clone to the shore in charge of a sentry, who fled at our approach and alarmed the camp. She had a new suit of sails and all the furniture complete in the cabin, which was collected together and fired, producing a beautiful cocflagration, but unfortunately revealing our position to the enemy, who co' .:aced a rapid fire from both banks .: ''narrow and tor , tuous stream un beyond their range. Our crew•- u.t.ed the fire from the boats and two ✓ steamers, gave cheers and pulled for their vessels, the light from the burning schooner guiding them on their way. Her destruction was complete, and although the clothes of the men and the boats were perforated with balls, not a man was killed. The officers and men vied with each other in the performance of their duty. Actine Master Foster applied the match in the cabin of the doomed yes• eel. Acting Assistant Surgeon W. B. Bunsall accompanied the expedition, ready, should nis services be required. I hope what I have done will meet your approbation, notwithstanding I have acted without orders. This little affair will show the anon y at least that we are watch. ing him, and ready to meet and destroy hie preparations for crossing this river at all Onus. I have the honor to be your obedient servant, N. D. HANB.EL, Lieutenant Commanding Capt. T. CRAVEN, Commanding Potomac Plot'la. Telegraph .Newa by Mail.—Unfounded statements of a character prejudicial to the public interests frequently appear among the telegraphic news of journals published at a distance from the capital, and the in quiry is often made why the government permits such dispatches to pass over the wires. It is proper therefore to say by re quest that those statements really go by mail and not by telegraph, or are prepared at the points where they appear. The case of Col. Hecker, who came here on business connected with the trouble in his regiment, now in Kentucky, has left Washingteik. Major Kime, Captain Manff and Lieutenant Klakke, representing their own interests and those of the other four officers who were discharged through Col, liecker's instrumentality, are still in Washington. They have preferred seri. ous charges against Hecker, and asked that he be court martialed, but no decision has yet been made. Battle in New Mexico. ST. On the 18th inst., at Fort Foantleray, forty Nevajoes made an attack on that post and were repulsed, with a loss of twenty killed and forty four wounded and some taken prisoners. The troops in the fort had but one man wounded.
