The Flood In Jefferson County
The Brookville. Jefersonian give; an
account of the flood of the 27th ult., in
that locality, as follows :
At dusk, the water in Sandy Lick and
the North Fork began to rise rapidly, rad
in a very short time the lowlands were in
undated. The bridge over the North Fork
was torn away' and borne down the cur
rent to the lower part of town, where it
lodged and still remains. Litch's steam
saw mill was filled with timber and drift,
and the dam considerably injured : his
machine shop was sadly disordered, and
the old grist mill made a narrow escape.—
hitch's loss is estimated to be very heavy ;
bu:, with that commendable perseverance
which has always characterized the man,
he has went to work with a lot of hands
and is now rapidly repairing the damages,
and we opine that before many days pass
by, the property will have an entirely dif•
ferent appearance from what it has at
present.
The foundry of Messrs. Brown & Wann
was in great danger. 0. H. and James
Brown were in the foundry at the time,
anxiously awaiting the subsiding of the
water, while their friends felt intense an x-
iety fear for their safety. On Saturday
morning they were released from their
perilous situation. The foundry wee filled
with mud, and the patterns, machinery,
etc , were more or less injured. A large
frame dwelling house, occupied by John
I'. Wane and Mr. Barr, was moved from
its foundation and carried to the lower side
of Pickering street—the occupants, seeing
their danger, had deserted the premises.—
The loss to Messrs. Brown & Wenn is
considerable, The house recently occupied
by Richard Espy and Mr. Engel was car
ried a considerable distance down the
creek. Barr's grist mill was filled with
water and-,h4 dwelling house was sub•
merged—boards, pieces of rafts and logs
lodged againstthe house, almost conceal •
tug it behind the huge pile. The White
street bridge, though not swept away, res
calved a hard shock, rendering it impassible
without repairs. Philip Taylor's property
shows the marks of the flood, it having
sustained no little damage—a portion of
the water at Taylor's dam seceded, cutting
a deep channel east of the houso. R J.
Nicholson's family were driven from their
house by the destructive element and took
shelter in the house of Lorenz) Haskell,
who assisted them in their escape. Nich
olson's house and furniture was badly
damaged. The mill dam is also somewhat
injured. A family named Doubles remain.
ed in their house until the fast rising water
seemed to cut off all hope of escape
Alarmed at their situati)n, they zero vent
to their fear in shrieks which brought L
renzo Haskell and others to their aid, who
carried the smallest members of the family
through the water and the larger ones
were placed on pieces of boards and thus
conveyed to terra firma. That pleasant
spot at Nicholson's appeared like one vast
swamp. Many other persons have sus
tained heavy damages, but we have not
learned the particulars, neither would we
have room for its insertion. Suffice it to
say that nearly every person living along
the streams, or owning lumber in the
streams or on the banks, have met with
more or less ices.
How TO KNIT STLCKINGS. —As stock
ing -knitting is to be the fashionable em
ployment of the ladies during the coming
fall and winter, and as probably a few of
cur patriotic young ladies have neglected
their education in this useful art, we copy
for their benefit the following directions,
which we find in an exchange, from an ex•
periencei knitter, how to knit stockings
for the soldiers: "Set up twenty-eight or
thirty stitches on a needle; rib two stitches;
knit plain seven inches before setting the
heel; form the heel by knitting twenty,,
three stitches each side of the seam, taking
off the first stitch without knitting; length
of heel, before narerwing, three inches;
narrow the heel by knitting ten stitches
plain; knit two together; knit plain to with
in three of the seam; knit two together,
one plain, and turn the seam; knit one
plain, slip and bind one stitch; knit plain
to within twelve of the end of the needle;
slip and bind; knit ten plain; knit back
plain; knit thus until the narrowings meet;
knit back on wrong side to seam; then
double together on the wrong side; knit
two together and bind off to one stitch;
take up the loops to the left hand, and
knit five stitches off to the instep needle on
to that one, knit off the instep needle, and
take five off the other end, to add to the
right side of the heel, and then take np the
loops; knit one round all plain; knit three
stitches and widen, by taking up a loop
between all across, to within seven of the
end of the needle; then narrow on the first
side, by knitting two together, and knit
five off plain; knitinstep needle plain; knit
five, and narrow on the last needle by slip-
ping and binding one'stit . ch; then widen
as before, bat only this one round. Now
narrow every other round, as before, until
you have twenty-four stitches on a needle;
knit plain four inches; narrow the toe on
the needle to left of instep needle; by knit
ting one plain slip ; and bind; then knit
plain to within three stitches of the end of
the needle; knit two together and one plain;
then narrow, as before, knitting three
plain rounds between ech narrowing; then
knit two rounds between, to twelve stitches
on each needle; narrow every other round
to the close."
AND STILL THEY COME. Jefferson
county has done nobly in raising volun
teers for the defence of our flag, but is still
going on 'with the geed work. Another
company is being formed for Colonel Mc-
Knight's rifle regifnent, to be called the
Jefferson Phalanx. It is proposed to have
every township and borough in the county
represented, and it will form the picked
company of theregiment, and will he armed
with the celebrated Springfield rifles. As
an inducement to prompt and speedy action
in the matter, Col. McKnight proposes to
present a beautiful sword or flag to that
township or borough which that reports
the number of enlistments allotted to it.—
In the same county Lieut. S. C. Arthura,
who was in the three months' service with
Capt. Wise, is raising a company styled
the United liagles, which be intends march
ing to the seat of war as soon as he gets
fall company. Lieut. A. was three months
in actual service.
Amer BURGEONB.—A misunderstand
ing seems to have existed in the minds of
many as to the meeting of the Medical
Board of Examiners, from this State, now
assembled at Washington city. It meets
only for the examination of surgeons and
itssistantslasneh.existingrngiments as are
now there assembled, and for none others.
