BOLD ATTEMPT AT HIGHWAY R3B BEBY. —On Monday night, a German butcher named. Joseph ',Unit, who keeps a shop on Smithfield street, left the city to go to his home across the river, near Spring Garden Run. After he had crossed the bridge over the run, and when. close to his home, he was knocked down by a blow on the back of the head, dealt by some villain. Recovering from the effects he struggled savagely with his assailant, and his cries of murder brought Mrs. Lilz• ell and a neighbor out of the house with a light. The would be robber then tried to make his escape, but the butcher held on to him long enough, so it is stated, for all three to recognize him as Charles Wilfre, who is a journeyman butcher, and works in this vicinity. The rascal then broke away, without obtaining anything for his peril. On Tuesday, Luzon went before Alderman Donaldson, and made informs. tien against Charles Wilfre for assault and battery with intent to rob, and he was arrested and held to bail to answer, Wilfre says he can prove an alibi. SURETY OF THE Pasca..-4 woman named Mre. Maryler, of Shaler town • ship, was committed to jail by Justice Graham, yesterday, charged by her moth er-in.•law, Mrs. Margaret Soelner, with threatening to kill her and her own chil dren, seven in number. Mrs. Miller's first husband, John Surliter, th'i father of seven children, she is charged with threatening to kill, has been nand for some time, and the widow married another, one Miller, who, however, left her in three weeks at_ terwards. She is, therefore, to use her own language, "as good as a widow again," and is anxious to be cleared of the aoousa• tions of the prosecutor, Margaret Soelner. Mrs. Miller utterly denies the charges made against her, and says that it proceeds from "spite work,' that she never could live quietly with her mother-in-law and that the said relative only wishes to prose cute her and get her property. Horn. &mos CAMERON, the Secretary of War, arrived here by Tuesday's mid night train from the east, and took rooms at the Monongahela House. At an early hour on Wednesday morning, after break fasting, he took a carriage and, aenompan., led by Mayor Wilson, Jno. M. Cameron was visited by a number of citizens and personal friends. He left for Louisville and St. Louis by the 12:25 train westward, intending to stop here on his return and institute a more thorough examination of tho cannon foundry, which is the object of his visit here. Gen. Cameron is accompanied on this tour by Adjutant• General Thomas. °Arr.
