—We have received the current number t f
this valuable periodical, edited by Edward

taken by everyone who wishes to b with
the age in American and foreign literature.
Of course the greatest prominence Is given
to the former, but foreign works of decided
merit and value are examined in the origi
nal and, if considered worthy, discussed in
a liberal, cosmopolitan spirit. Educational
publications receive due attention, and
now publications are fairly crit , cited. The
present number has a rich table of con

the Poetical Literature of Spain, Hans
Christian Andersen's Fairy Legends, the
influence of Music, the De Sanpures, Ma ,

ant signing himself '.Oil Creek," writes to
us in reference to Mr. Jas. McClintock, of
Dempsaytown, Venango county, who, it
was stated by the Meadville and Franklin
papers, had exprased himself in favor of
secession arid prohibited the stars and
stripes from being raised in the village.—
On hearing tide, says our correspondent,
the 'Oil Creek cavalry." and son,e resi
dents of Oil City visited Dampseytown cn
Saturday last, "to raise the stare and stripes
at the peril of their lives." Mr. McChn-
Lock met the company, welcomed them to
his hotel and avowed himself as a strong
Union loving man. It seems that Mr.
McClintock was a Douglas man and bay
dug remarked that he would raise the flag
on a hickory pole he was set down as a
secessionist. He says he is ready at any
time to aid in putting down the present re
bellion and that the stars „end stripes will
be floating in front of his house in a few
days.
The Elgittlt Regiment Ira, a Brush

The Eighth Pennsylvania Reserve, Col.
Hays, according to letters received here,
"have mot the enemy," and given them a
taste of their quality. After a severe
march from camp Tenalley to Point of
Rorke, nineteen miles, Capt. Jehnston's
company ana the Greene County Rangers
were detached as pickets, and advancing
four or five miles, put to flight a number
of rebels on the road. ThFy moved to
wards a log house which seemed to be the
rebel head quarters, and attack d it after '
loading with double cartridge. A few
shots at the chimney and an open window
brought out a woman with the stars and
stripes, and a few more a dig of truce.
Five rebels were killed, three in the woods
and two in the house, and several wound , .
ed. None of the Eighth were hurt.
Tag GERMAN REGIIIENT.—OOI. Sctrim
melfennig, with the battallion of his Ger , .
man regiment raised here, some five hun
dred men in all, left Camp Wilkins, where
they have for some time bean quartered,
about noon yesterday and marched through
the city to the Pennsylvania ltAilroad
depot, where they took passage for Phila
delphia, where they will be joined by throe
hundred more now in camp there. The
regiment is composed of stalwart Germans,
nearly all trained soldiers and, when tilled
to the war complement, which will require
two hundred more men ; will be armed
and equipped by the government at once.
We shall expect to bear a good report
from this body of soldiers.
.onsrm FOR GOVERNMENT —T:ie
ana Regisler says: "Six hundred horses
have been shipped for Washington from
this place within a few weeks. The ogent
has intelligence to the Effect that five hum
dred more will be ready for shipment as
fast as the company can provide the means
of transportation. These eleven hundred
head of horses have probably cost not lees
than one hundred thousand do:iars, which
is a handsome cash item to be placed to the
credit of this and two or three of the ad.
wining counties."
STORE ROBBED.—The Mercer Dispatch
of Wednvday says: Tile store of Newkirk

By perseverance, aed marching through
the rays of a parching but sun, dusty roads.
Bth, we in due course of time arrived at n
suitable place of halt, in a large Held Jr-6r
Woodville, where we encamped for the
remainder of the night. While at this
point oar cooking utensils arrived, and
once more we ,are luxuriating in that old
beverage, coffee. Dome Nature has pro
vided us with a brook which wends its
way through our place of encampment,
and we embraced the opportunity of again
cleansing ourselves, that on the morrow
we may feel capable of undertaking a long
march.
While in camp hero several circumstan
ces transpired which are worthy of notice,
viz:—A squad of cavalry arrested--or
captured—a rebel hlsjor, woo was snugly
ensconced in the neighborhood, and who
had furnished the seeeshers with men and
money. During a thorough search which
was instituted on his premises, a great ma.
ny articles valuable fi) the tiovernrnent
were found. Ills property was confiscated,
according to toe late 'act of Congress. A
619 of one cx !nanny brought Iran camp
three fine horses, wlt.ch were Immediately
put into U. S. use Several of his Aar•
keys accompany us, but 1 am not positive
as to the disposition to be made of them.
Among other articles taken from the
aforesaid Major were powder, a full suit of
officers' cloth, large telescope, sword, etc.
He now closes up our rear, in an ambu•
lance, as a prisoner of war.
Our scouts are now upon the trail of set ,
oral others, as deeply dyed in secessionism
es the above specimen, and have every
hope of success in capturing them.
While in line, and ready to leave the
above camp, our Colonel made us a few
remarks, prior to our setting off on our
weary way. His remarks were to the ef
fect that we would probably move on as
far as Port Tobacco, and at that
point cross the Potomac into Virginia
e., if our troops had an engage
ment at Munson's Hill, when most
probably we will witness warm work,
At 12 o'clock, the hottest part of the day
be could possibly select—he gave us the
word "march," and we again had a puffing
pack-mule time of it for a while. As a
specimen of the extreme heat, I would
only state that one of the cavalry horses
dropped dead from the effects, and yet the
Pittsburgh boys atood it,having only drop..
pact one man, from the time of starting up
to the present period, which is a standing
proof that "blood will tell," with a small
sprinkling of perseverance.
We are now quartered at a small place
called Benedict, at the junction of the
Pawtucket river and Uhesepeake Bay.—
Our entrance into the place was greeted by
a large darkey, who cried aloud ! "Ch,
Sara a Massey Benedict's gone. Bross my
soul, where did you all cum frum."—
Which saying ho repeated until our entire
line passed him; in fact the darkeys were
all astonished, and had not the remotest
idea of our intentions, thinking that we
had come to free them; under this Bopp°,
salon several followed us, by secreting
themselves in the wagons, ate., but were
always hastily returned to their masters.
Today an overseer was in the camp, after
six of his "contrabands" that, have made
themselves scarce, but with what Succors
he has met in his endeavors to pursue
them 1 am not aware,
Our present encampment is on the banks
of the Potomac, and is a beautiful location
for present protection from the weather
we have erected huts, and are making ar
rangements to remain 48 hours, where
then to proceed to I do not know, but I
will tarnish you the particulars at as early
a date as possible. Nothing has occurred
here to mar or hinder our peace, except
the long roll, which called us all from our
peaceful slumbers last night, casued by
some rebel, who shot at one of our senti.
eels, but without the desired effect. One
of our teamsters goes back to Washington,
and I thought to send you these hastily
collected items, and as he leaves now, you
must excuse farther. But more anon.
Truly yours, t&c.,
