The officers and passenger 9 on the train that arrived at 12 ' o'clock last night, on the North Missouri „road give the following partitnilion of the af fair at Monroe, which being, gathered from parties that were present, may be considered substantially correct. On Monday, Colonel Smith, 'hearing that the State troops, under 'Gen. _Harris, were encamped near Florida, left Mon roe Station with a force of'6oo men, to disperse them. After passing Florida, and when a short distance north of one of the fords of Salt river, on the other side of which the State boops were en camped, his force was suddenly fired on from the roadside by about two hun dred of Harris' command. At this spot there was an open field, lying to the right of the filed,. and about eighty yards in width. The Strife troops, who were a mounted scouting party, had left their horses a short distance back in the woods, and fired in ambush from the opposite side of the field. The only person 'injured by the fire was Capt. McAllister, of the . Sixteenth Illi nois Regiment, who • 'was mortally Wounded. The Federal fettles returned the fire without effect, and retired to 'Wards Monroe Station to await .rein forcements, the balance of Harris' cow mand having crossed - the ford and coin, menced a system of guerilla warfaie. After retreating a few miles the Fede ral forces encamped till the next day, when they again retired towards . Mon roe Station. A ehert skirmish here en gaged in, without kw to either aide. In the meantime no guard having been left at Monrixt, Capt. Owen enter ed the place -with about 200 of the State forces, and burned the depot and I some cars. The officers on the Hannibal and St. Joseph road report thirteen passenger aid seventeen freight cars destroyed, and another station house burned .a short distance from Monroe. Colonel Smith, as soon as he reached the latter place, threw his entire force into a large building used as an academy. Harris' command, some 2,500 in number sur rounded him and brought two six pound cannon to bear oil the building. Owing to the distance at which they were placed and the unskilful working they did no execution. During the constant interchange of shots that took plane, two men, not connected with either side but resi dents of Monroe, were killed. The mantrof One 'was Hotchkess. Day before yesterday strong rein forcements arrived from Hannibal and the West to the aid of Colonel Smith. General Harris, seeing that his men were incapable of making effectual re sistance, being armed with shot guns and common rifles, ordered them to leave and loo'c out for their own safe ty. He also ordered them to assemble as speedily as possible, in the northern part of Callaway county, where he in tended making another stand. Yester day, Harris, with fifty men was about ten miles from Mexico, the balance of his force being scattered over the sur rounding country. On his side there are none reported killed, and only three slightly wounded. On the Federalside only those already mentioned. Gen. Harris intends making another stand in Callaway county. The excite ment through the country is great, young men leaving with what arms they could, obtain, and in parties of tens and twenties. Hundreds of them yesterday passed through Mexico, and' it id esti mated that Gen. Harris' force when re. assembled were several thmisand men'. : The road master on the Hannibal and St. Joseph road reports the Salt River bridge destroyed, and the remains no* lying in the bed of the stream, and• all the culverts destroyed between Palmyra and salt River. A provision train from _Hudson City. for Monroe•was thrown from the track yesterday; by a rail being displiced'.= Between andson City and Monroe there is a kirge amount of track tern up, and the officers of" the North Missouri Road, report that no train arrived, at Hu soli deateiday, or will be able to under 'riling) ays.—St. Lou& Ripublioan, of Satur day. • F. F. V.'s--Fleet Footed Virginians.' The boast of aristocratic Virginianß that Pocahontas founded their families;` is but one among thetays around the brows of the F. F. V.'s. The F. F. V. has a reputation not_ only great , but growing, He is renowned for his affec tion for sherry cobblers, and his aver sion to anything calculated to induce either werineas or perspiration. If all the world were F. F. V.'s, the doom of labor upon man would never have been fulfilled. Let him alone, and the mei meres of the F. P. V. would grotv a crop of mushrooms, when two small boys would be necessary to pull his' mouth open whenever he wished . to gap. Since the F. F. V.'s have shaken of their indolence and taken to fight ing, they show that some things can be done as well as others, and that when propelled by the proper kind of fear, ad F. F. V. possesses an ability to get over. nearly as much ground in a given time as a dummy lowmotive. For this rea son, a poetical friend suggests that' he' F. F.
