On Saturday afternoon a very inter esting exhibition of Lieu. Jawed rifled cannon was made on the Monument grounds, in the presence of the Presi dent, members of the Cabinet, and of Congress, and a great number of offi• cora and scientific persona. The guns exhibited were the battery of the Secund Rhode Island Regiment, and the operations were carried on un der the command of Gov. Sprague in person, who formerly commanded the Hirst Regiment. Col. Slocum was on the field, and Capt. lionalds directed the movements of the company. This battery has only been organized a month, and it is said that the company never be tore fired ball cartridges. lhe guns are bronze six-pounders of the ordinary pattern externally, but are bored a trifle larger than if they used round shot, and are rifled acoord ing to Gen. James' plan. Tte projec tiles used were shells weighing 12 pounds and solid shot weighing 14 pounds. The principle of their con struction, for which Gen. James has a patent, is the combination of an ex panding metallic ring of flexible metal, with an elongated cast iron projectile, so arranged that when the powder burns this expanding ring is pressed into close contact with the inside of the gun, fill ing the rifled grooves, and effectually shutting off all escape of the gas. This ring dperates best when covered with canvas thouroughly greased, so that the ball glides out of the gun without bring. ing metal into contact with metal; and in this form Gen. James uses it. But if the canvas is dispensed with, the projectile answe• s very well, so long as the gun lasts, although the abrasion of metal upon metal rapidly destroys the bore. W hen used as the inventor prefers to use it, the effect of the projectile is much less Injurious to the gun than the effect of ordinary round shut, notwith standing the increased weight of the metal thrown; which is proved by the fact stated by Gen. James, that he has fired a common bronze six-pounder fifty times with two pounds of powder and fourteen pounds of common shots without producing the least injurious effect upon the gun, whereas two pounds of powder fired in the same gun behind a six-pound round shot will destroy the gun at the first fire, by swelling it so at the point where the shot rests upon the powder that it cannot be used again. Gem James also stated that one of these guns had been fired with two pounds and a half of rifle powder, and a four teen pound shot, and that there was no injury done the gun, when the re coil was fifteen feet. The same law holds good for large as well as small guns, as has been proved by practice and reported by a board of State officers; and the largest guns in service, when rifled on Gen. James' plan an f using his projectile, will throw double the weight of metal due to their size as round shot guns, to a distance much greater than before, without injuring the guns is the least. The Union gun at Old Point is on this plan, and the Government has a large number of these rifled 42-pounders, throwing 84- pound shot, ready for use. The first exhibition was throwing shells by the whole battery of six guns into the river at the distance of three quarters of a mile. As the shells struck the water they - burst, throwing up jets into the air, and scattering fragments, about in all directions. Eighteen of these shells were fired in fifty-two sec onds, and all kept together at a point aimed for on the river. One section of the battery of two guns MB then placed in position to throw down the river at long range, and sev. eral shots were fired over the Long Bridge. The guns soon Used up all the range in that direction which oould be got without striking the shore; and when the elevation reached nineteen degrees the shot maintained their flight thirty.five seconds and carried four miles and a quarter. At seventeen degrees elevation the flight was twenty-five sec onds and the distance three miles and a half. The longest range obtained by the Armstrong and Whitworth guns is at an elevation of thirty-six degrees, and as Gen. James at little more than half that elevation throws its projectile far ther than can be seen, it would seem probable that at the highest elevation it would exceed the English ones, and this is all done without making a new gun, and simply by rifling in a particu lar way an old piece now lit for use, The English government knighted Sir William Armstrong for inventing a plan by which, at great expense, a new and complicated gun, could be made to shoot at long range. General James has invented a plan by which any old gun can out-shoot Sir William Arm strong's new and costly one. Thus we have another illustration of the superi ority of American inventive genius over European, in every department of Fact tics' art and science. Mexican war, published in "Hows's Achievements of Ametidans," gives some interesting items on this head in description of the battle of. Palo. Alto, the opening battle of the war : When all was ready, both armies stood still for about twenty minutes, each wai ting for the other to begin the work of death, and during- this time I did not see a single man of the enemy move--: they stood like statues. We, remained quiet.„ with two exception; Gen. Taylor, followed 1 , - hi' 4taff, rode from left to - - right at a slow pace, with his leg thrown • over like a woman, andashepassedeaeh regiment be spoke words of.encourage 7; ment. I know not what he said to the others, but when he came to where we stood, he looked steadily at us, I sup pose to see what effect the novel-sir.: cumstances in which we were ; placed had upon us, and as he gazed he said; "The bayonet, my hardy cocks; the bayonet is the thing." The ether.oc-e casion was that'of Lieut. Black, of the engineers, who volunteered gallop along the enemy's line, ,in both armies, and oeunt, their so close did he go that he might have been shot a hundred limes. One of the officers of the enemy, doubtlesS thinking he 'had some communication to inake, rode out to meet him ; Black, however, paid no attenticn to him, but rode on; and then returned and reported to Gen. Taylor: Thus stood those two belligerent armies,. face to face. What were:the feelings of those thousands. How many thoughts and fears•were crowded into= those few moments ! Look at-our men! a clammy sweat is settled all over faces slightly , pale, not from cowardly fear but from an awful sense of peril; combined with determination not to flinch from duty. These are the ma meats in which true soldiers resign themselves to the reflection that-what ever may befall them they will aetwith honor ; these are the moments when the absolute coward suffers more than death—when, if not certain he would be shot in his tracks, he would turn and flee. Fighting is very hard work; the who =Ethos passed through a two hours fight has lived through a great amount of mental and physical labor. At the end of a battle I always fOund that Iliad perspired so I rofusely as to wet through all my thick woollen clothing, and when I had got cool, I was as so - re as if I had been beaten with a club. When the battle commences the feelings un dergo a change. Reader, did you ever see your house on fire ? If so, it was then you rushed into great danger; it was then you went over Elates, climbed over walls, lifted heavy loads, which you never could have done in your cooler moments; you then have exper ienced some of the excitement of a soldier in battle. I always knew my danger—that at any moment I was liable to be killed; Set such was my excitement that I never fully realized it. All men are not alike ; some-are cool ; some are perfectly wild or crazy; others are so prostrated by fear that they are con pletely unnerved—an RN NI sinking and relaxation of all their enegies . takes place, awful to behold; they tremble like an aspen, slink into ditches and covert --places, cry like children, and are totally insensible to shame—dead to every ethotion hut the overwhelming tear of instant. death. We had a few, and but a few of such, in our army. As the two armies were facing, each• other, it was remarkable to see,,the coolness of our men; there they stcvl chewing bits of biscuit, and talklng/ about the Mexicans—some woudetiiigi if they would fight, others allowing/ that they wohld, and like demoni; Ste. , I kept my eye on the artillery of the] enemy, 'and happened to be-looking] towards their right wing, wheu.sud l denly a white curl of smoke sprang ;up there from one of their gnus, and then I saw the dust fly some distance ity front, where thehall struck. The pent,y,l . lo4 *tri =Pi idly, and their billS knockedthe 'dust about us in all directotcP; some went over our heads; others struck the ground in front and bounded away. .•t Our batteries-new went to work, and poured in npon them a Derfeet storm of iron.: Lieut. Churchill and his men began with their eighteen pounders, and when the . first was fired, it made such a loud report that our men gave a spon taneous shout, which seemed - to inspire us with renewed' confidence. I could hear every word the Lieutenant said to his then. When the first stint wig fired, he watchettlie ball, saying, " Too high, men; try another." "'Too low, men; try again—the third time is the oharm, , ' The third shot was fired, and I saw with my own eyes the dreadful effect of that and the following sho4,- "That's it my boys!" shouted Churchill, jmnping up about two feet; "you have them nbwl keep her at that!' And so they did, and every shot tore complete lanes through the enemy'slines. but they stood it manfully.. .the full chorus of battle now ranged; twenty-three pieces of artillery helehoi.4th their iron hail.
