*ary before the war is over. The peaceful aDd
profitable pursuits of life are being forsaken
partly from choice and partly from necessity
for the warlike preparations for the field of
s;:*■< battle. There seems to be no abatement in
the military ardor of our people. It seemß as
though as many were ready to enlist as there
were when the war first broke out. We ad*
h;-. nnre this noble patriotism, but prudence and
deliberation should influence every man in
this trying hour. Thero are many young men
fz'j— whom we know, who are eagar to devote thetn
selves to the Eervice of their country, upon
whom, wives, motherland fisters are depen
dent fora liviihood. All such, who have situ
ations of & profitable character and can retain
them, should yield their places in the military
ranks to those who are out of employment.
Patriotism la's great virtue.but the duties of the
citizen are not all swallowed up in fighting bat*
ties. “He who provideth not for his own house
hold is worse than an infidel. 11 There is danger
at this time that many will go to the war whose
paramount duty it is to stay at home. There is
no danger of a lack of men for the army. The
North can and will rally a million to sustain
the government If a million should be neces
sary. But while we stand by our government
now, we must also take care that we do nothing
which shall weaken its ability in the future.
Those who, in times like these, devote their
energies and their means to the production of
value, to sustaining those who must be sutain
ed at borne, end to furnishing the means for
sustenance for those who fight the battles of
their country, are as true patriots as those who
fight those battles.
It it the worst of policy Vo permit the prolit
able pursuit* of the country to languish at a
time when all that the country can produce
will be needed as this war progresses, and when
it is over, then the taxes and the debt which
are the inevitable fruits of war are to be paid.
. While our patriotism sustains our government
let our prudence guard against those evils
which war engenders, and our industry prepare
for such demands as may be made, upon us.
A LARGER ARMY >VANTED.
There is alarm at Washington City for
fear of an attack from the rebels—although
we think the alarm is needless, for if they
had intended to attack the capital they
would hare done so before our troops had
»o effectually intrenched it.
If the despatches to the HcraU are to be
believed, the Government does not yet find
itself sufficiently prepared with troops to
risk any decisive action with the rebels.
New troops are still guiug on to the seat of
war, however, and the Federal army is daily
getting stronger and in better discipline.
- . The Herald states that the War Depart
n that the rebel force in
irginii if stronger than ours and better
, s commanded, and that our wisest military
ggl leaders entertain small hopes of victory, in
0L case a battle is precipitated before the Fed
i- J era! army is reinforced. It is estimated
C that 250,000 men will be required—an opin
ion shared by the President and General
Scott. Mr. Lincoln, in his message to Con
gress, which he is now preparing, will not
call for a new loan, but propose to issue
Treasury notes to the amount of $200,000,000
or $300,000,000, ranging from twenty dollars
udwards. This appeal to the people is on
the plan of Louis Napoleon, and is resorted
to on account of symptoms of revolt in Wall
street. The President will openly avow his
reasons for disregarding the requirements of
the Constitution, and will call on Cong Tess
to endorse his acts.
Trouble seems to be brewing in Kentucky.
General Prentiss bed sent a regiment to Co
lumbus, from Cairo, on the requisition of the
Unionists, wbo feared Invasion by Pillow’B
force from Tennessee. The Memphis Avalanche
-''proclaims vs* to the knife against the North
west, and says Kentucky will give a passage to
the Tennessee troops for the invasion of Ohio,
Indiana and Illinois, where the secessionists
are to rise e» masse so soon as the tnvaders ar
rive. Bat considering that nearly one-third
of the late popular vote was cast against seces
sion, the Tennessee rebels perhaps will have
enough to do to maintain their ground in their
own State, as Ea»t Tennessee threatens to iol-
J --. low the example of Western Virginia.
When the first news of Gen. Lyon’s vio
tory over the Missouri State troops was
received, the number killed was stated at
300, and the wounded at 600. The next
day the number killed waß reduced to 20 ;
and the last account gives the result as four
of the Federal troops killed, and nine
wounded, and four of the State troops killed
and fifteen wounded. At this rate the offi
cial aocount of the battle of Roonevitle will
read, " Nobody hurt!” The battle teats
the story of the three black crows.
The streets are full of rumors regarding
battles fought at various point*. These ru
mors are of daily recurrence. I'he special
despatches to the newspapers are the
-wind work of many of these exciting
irles. We beg the public to understand
\t, in regard to special despatches, each

The intense heat of the weather should

The street* and alleys of the city are unu

should bo thoroughly cleaned at once.

The latest intelligence from Richmond is
that troops froth States further South con
tinued to be arrive in that city. It appears
fourteen regiments have arrived there re
cently, making 35,000 in all at that point,
all well armed, some of them with European
muskets, and well commanded either by
West Point graduates or men who have
been students in the Southern military
academies. It is also stated that in addi
tion to the new intreachments eight miles
northwest of Richmond, the city is to be
defended from attack on the western side
by works at a still greater distance, in
pursuance of surveys just made by military
engineers. The survey does not extend
beyond the Blue Ridge for it is calculated
by General Beauregard that the disposition
of the Confederate forces along the Man
assas Gap Railroad, and particularly south
west of Strasburg as far as Harrisonburg,
twenty miles from Staunton, and in the
oounties of Shenandoah and Rockingham,
will protect Manassas Junction and Rich
mond from any attack from the West.
It 18 stated that the two Missouri Sena,
tors, Polk and Johnson, do not intend tak
ing their seats in the Senate of the United
States at the July Session.
The same thing has tieeu frequently as
serted of late, with regard to lohn C.
Breckinridge, of Kentucky
We presume that Mr. Breckinridge would
be ashamed to desert his post in the Senate
just after Kentucky has elected ten new
Representatives to act for her in the House.
If he does desert it, it will be lift duly lo
resign, That leaves Magoffin m the predi
cament of appointing his biiecesaor As lie
wouldn’t appoint a Union man. and as
Breckinridge might as well draw the pay--
which he probably needs—ns any other Be
cessionist, we rather think the Kx-Yiee
President will appear in Washington on the
4th of July.
ImplemeuU ol War.
While book-makers have turned their at
tention almost exclusively to the production
of military publications, the inventive talent
of the country is devoted to the production
of improved arms and more destructive
weaponsof warfare. An inventor in Marble
bead exhibits to the Government n small
shell, the explosion of which, he says in his
statements of its power, '• would kill the
devil.” We do not know that he stales
that he comes to this conclusion upon actual
experiment.
Richmond Strongly Fortified
Persona who have reached this city and
Baltimore from Richmond, slab- ihai the
Rebels are making gigantic preparations
fbr the complete defence of the last, named
city. The outposts towards the Potomac
aud y.-rktown are strengthened, masked
batteries are plaoed at advantageous point-,
aod the city is strongly fortified Not lex
than thirty thousand troops are said to he
there.
Movements in Kouth western Virginia
Some bold movements un tbo fart of the
Union troops may be looked fur in the South,
western part of Virginia. The Virginia and
Tennessee Railroad will be occupied by the
Union forces, probably even before the rebel i
are driven to the right bank of the James
river. The army steaming up the Kanawha
river, on twelve boats, at this moment, wils
doubtless accomplish this object.
Seven Thousand Feet of Bridges Burned
The repairs on the Baltimore and Ohio
Railroad will be deferred until the Govern
ment obtains fall possession of the entire
route. About seven thousand feet of
bridges have been burned and destroyed
by the Rebels.
Thb report of the Confederate troops re
tiring from Big Bethel to Yorktown was pre
mature. On the contrary the rebels still hold
both Big Bethel aad Little Bethel, and threat
en to drive the Federal troops beyond Hamp
ton. More cannon have been sent down to
the insurgents from Richmond. But they
need all their masked batteries, for Gen. Buu
ler will probably soon visit them with a large
force.
Senator* Breckinridge and Powell
It is with pleasure we can say that Ken
tucky will be represented in the United States
Senate at the approaching session ul Congress.
Major Breckinridge and Mr. Powell will both
attend and be in their seats. Wo felt aatistied
that neither of these gentlemen would flinch
from their duty, and annouooed some time ago
that they would go to W ashiugton And why
should they nor Their State ih luy»i u. the
Union, and, so far as we have seen or heard,
neither of these gentlemen has said .»r done
anything to indicate that they wish her to
change that position. OincinnrU Enquirrr.
By the way of New Orleans we learn lha*
the vail of aecresy has been removed from
the proceedings of the Virginia State Con
vention. The vote for the Seceaeion ' »rdi
nnoce on the 17th of April showed sg for it
and jj against it. on the Mth mil o war
signed by Ul delegates.
The Atlantic Monthly , for. July, haa been
received by Hunt X Miner, at the Great
Periodical Depot, Fifth street, next door to
the Postoffice, where may be had all the
latest uewspapers and publications ol Lbe
dav.
‘ >n Thursday a gentleman from Arlington
stated in Washington City that Geu. Beau
regard was advancing upon the Potomac,
and increasing his forces east and north of
Manassas .Junction. If this is true we may
look for hot work soon.
It is said he has sent five thousand men u>
Romney to act in conjunction with other Con*,
federate troops against the advancing force of
General McClellan. It is probable, therefore
that we shall soon have stirring news from that
region.
The anno lineament is officially made Jiat
the President, in consequence of the pressure
of public business, is obliged to decline re
ceiving any visitors from this lime until the
opening of the session of Ooogress.

The First Telegraph Despatch from an
Aeiiel Station
Balloons are proving a very useful aid
to the army. The large area of the
earth’s surface, to be commanded by the eye
at the high elevation to which a balloon
can ascend gives great facilities for observa
tion and millitary reoonnoisance. The
balloon poised over an enemy’s camp,
may observe his defences, count his troops
see hi* weak points, and know where In*
can be assailed with advantage. All this
can be done without exposure t » danger
itself, and is certainly preferable to mili
tary excursions in railroad cars to find out
masked batteries by having them play un
expectedly upon the troops engaged in the
reconnoisance. A remarkable and novel
feature which accompanies these balloon
experiments, is the new application which
is made of the magnetic telegraph. The
rope which holdsjthe balloon io place, also
contains a magnetic wire, through which
the observer in the balloon can continually
send information of his observations to the
commaudiog officer below, or receive any
direction upward from the same authority.
Professor Lowe has just been making use
of his balloon for this purpose, and the first
telegraph despatch from an aerial station
half a mile above the earth, was sent to
the War Department by this novel tele
graph on Tuesday. The fact demonstrates
the great assistance that aeronautics may
afford in the present campaign.

The Gincinnati Gazette, speaking of
General Sohenck, before the Vienna affair
occurred, says:—
‘•Now, the first thing that ought to be
done with such a Brigadier is to put him

This mode of making a general may ac
count for some of the unfortuuate mishaps
which have happened to our troops when
under flu- charge of«uch experiencedofficers.
