The following items we extract from l&at week’s Venango Spectator: throve & McKnight, of Bordenlown, N. J., have a good well on the Dubbs’ Refinery lot, half a mile down the rivur. Theirs is a sort of fountain well, flowng of its own accord after a Tow strokes of the pump. In starting their pump on Monday morning the walking beam broke, but the oil continued to flow at the rate of liO to 26 barrels in twenty-four hours. John Phipps Co ,on Pithole, have just commenced pumping their well. They are down 190 feet, and are getting about iu barrels pft day. The Gilmore well, on the Kalston farm, -.1 miles up French oreek, a now institution re ported in our last issue, commenced pumping on Monday morning last, and by timepiece was running at tbo rale of -6 gallons per min ute. Of course it will not continue to yield at this rate, but may be estimated as a No. 1 well. On Tuesday one of the most serious accidents yet recorded occurred at Hon. A. Plumer’s well, on the Clapp farm, near the mouth of Oil creek. A heavy vein of oil was tapped, and the flow of gas and oil was instantaneous, and both were immediately in a blaze. Two men, whose names wo could not learn, were seriously burned—one of them shockingly. The engine house, derrick, etc , were entirely consumed, and a largo quantity of oil lost. Thu engine was £aved. Messrs Curtis & Hickok, on Oil creek, have a fountain well, which we previously noticed They have, within a few weeks, without a pump, gathered without a pump upwards of 1-00 barrels of oil. This well flows every d iy, Sundays excepted. This fact is as true as it is remarkable. We commend this well as an ex ample to all who are not disposed to respect the Sabbath It is the model well of the re gion. The Mercer Register says it is rumored that oil has been Btruck by Mr. Tew, boring at Big Bend, about live miles from that place, at a depth of 140 ieet. From the Lawrence Journal ve extract the following: The Eureka Oil Company, on the "Watson farm, up the Shenango, from New Caetle, are down 160 feel. They have driven that depth of pipe. The gas now throws up large quan tities of water, and the indications for oil are good. At Pulaski, the well being sunk by Messrs. Bell & Co. on the Shenango, opposite that vil lage, is down 250 feet At this depth they struck oil. A-correspondent states mat when the vein was tapped the oil was forced up in great quantities, and still continues to flow at the rate, perhaps, of ten gallons in twenty-four boon. The firm intend boring still deeper, and are sanguine that they have a good well This is the first discovery of oil in the Snenan* go valley, and the property owners in the neighborhood are quite jubilant over it. Simpson, Camp Dell & Co., on the Small farm on the MaHuning, at the depth ol 2b.1 feet, have the best show in that section. On Friday last they struct the first vein of oil, and on Wednesday struck a very strong vein of clear oil. They intend to commence pump ing in about two weeks. Euwer «fc Alford, on the same farm, have struck oil at foot, and the show is good. U. A. Woodworth A: Co., in South New- Castle, the Pioneer well, have an abundance of oil ; it *6 thought that it will turn out to be A 20 barrel well. They have about closed operations in boring, and are making arrange menu to put in a chamber preparatory to pumping. * 'iue New Castle Courant slates that Woy* man & Alien commenced pumping their oil well on Mahoning on Tuesday, and are suc ceeding very well. It is supposed that they pumped a barrel of oil in about three hours. A few days will teat tbo matter more fully. The Mahoning correspondent of tbo Youngs* town Register sa}s Strawbridge A: Co. are still pumping from »J to 8 barrels per day. Powers A Co, have been very unlucky unco commenc ing to pomp, breaking their shaft, pump rod, etc. klssick A Bryson are down •4*o leel, and the oil and water pours out at the mouth of the well almost constantly. They are about commencing to pump. Book, Moore A Co. have opened up several new veins of oil re cently, and have now a good prospect of hav ing a large yielding well. The water that Hows from the mouth of the hole into Lho river" is so with oil that it colors the river for a great distance. They have Hied a large trough, something on the principle of a vat, through which the how from the well now runs, and most of the oil is saved in this way. The Canfield Herald says: Mr. Hosea Hoo ker, showed us, a few days since, a sample of rook oil, about '*o per cent, burning fluid— which was pumped from the well of Hoover A Co., in Lawrenco county, Pa, throe miles below Lowell. It is quite as pure as refined oil. This well is 308 feet deep, and they intend | to sink it about 50 feet lower. An act has been read in the Legislature for the incorporation of the Columbia Oil Com* pany- Tne corporators are David Kichey, Ni cholas Voeghtley, W. A. Heed, J. M. Porter, Thomas Hoge, John Noble and S. M. Smith ; and the act empowers them to hold land in Venango and Allegheny counties to the extent of live hundred acres, on which they may bore for salt, oil, etc., and prepare the products of the same for market, Ac. The capital stock is fixed at two hundred thousand dollars, and the stockholders are made individually liable for any debts due mechanics, workmon or laborers employed by the company, and for any pro duce which may bo supplied the same, always provided that said debts be sued for within six monthß from the time of their being contracted. A letter to the Cincinnati Commercial states that the great Hoeveler well, on the Kanawha, has ran dry. They are sinking it deeper. The same authority slates that the Camden and Braden drills are both yielding largely—the former as high as 1000 barrels per day. The Leclaire, which left for the oil regions on (Saturday, took si 1 engines for Oil creek, a lot of empty barrels, and some other freight. Thiatee Mb. Couldock.— Mr. Hender tost, the active manager of the Theatre, hat engaged Mr. C. W. Oouldock, the Pittsburgh favorite, who will play here for a abort lime Mr. Couldoek 1b a capital actor in bia lice, and hu always drawn well here, and we have noreaaon to auppose that his present engage ment will bo an exception. He appears for tbe first time, as Bichelieu, this evening. It is one of his best parts, next to Luke Fielding. L it a misfortune that the identity of the old man in the “Willow Copse" is so strongly apparent in all Mr. Couldock’a acting, and we hope that in lime he may succeed in miking each part distinot in itself. This done, be would have few rivals on the stage. We heartily wish him a profitable engagement, and that it may be equally so to the manages ment. Uxsworth’b Mixstkkls. —We have a new candidate for public favor in the company above named, who have entered into the wide held of competition for celebrity in cork opera. •They come to us with high encomium from the Eastern and Western press, and as the -coinpjkny combines fuurteen star performers we may expect something rich. We have had any quantity of such amusement of late and if the Cnsworths make their stay of three eights at Concert Hall, as announced else •where, profitable, ihvy must give us something #iew in songs, dunc<«H and burlesques. He bad been in the city for Beveral days, stopping at tba National Hotel, Water etreet, during which time he drank freely, and about two o'clock on Satur day Afternoon went to the American Hotel, kept by K. McFarland, corner of Ferry street and Diamond alloy, where ho lay for nearly two hours on a bench in the bar-room. Shortly before four o’clock he stepped up to the bar, in company with a friend, with whom he had been conversing, and asked for a drink, lie took the bottle, poured out a glass full and was about to drink, when he stepped back sudden! v, ezclaiming “oh! my!” He seemed faint and ill and Mr. McFarland took him to the back door, thinking bo was about to throw up. iieturniog U tho bar-room, Mr Frew took a chair, carried it to the door and sat down with his teet against tho framo, where he grew weaker and weaker. Discovering that he was about dying, the people of the house removed him inside, where he soon became insensible. A physician was sent for, and on the arrival of Dr. McDonald he was dead. Coroner Hoot wick was then sent for; he arrived about live o’clock, and the jury, after hearing the evi. denee, returned a verdict of death from the effects of intemperance.
