Messrs. Clark, Gruber & Co 5 , have sot a small
mint in operation at Denver city, from which
they issue $5 and $lO pieces. These are of va
rious degrees of fineness, from 816*1000 to
888-1000—tbo standard of American gold at
the United States mint being 900-1000—that
of Kuglaud 916-1000, and therefore purer.
The silver mines of ibe Washoe region
promise to be very aound&nt. Last year they

a This Is a very brief synopsis of the precious
metals deposited from the mines of the United
Bt&tes during the last fiscal year, and it Is
merely quoted for the purpose of impressing
upon our readers the fact that this year the de
posits are largely increasing, except at Dahlo
nega and Charlotte, wherq no augmentation is
anticipated. For example, the depositsof Jan
uary in the U. S. Mint are the largest ever
known, and those of this month are expected
to exceed them inamount. Indeed, we are in
formed by Mr. Snowden that during February
the coinage wlli probably reach $9,-00<>,o<X>.
At the present time, the mint in this city ?s
unusually busy, but the chief amounts v«*d
are from England, in sovereigns and ‘-.Roths
child’s fine gold bars” From stt,OUO t uoQ to
$10,00Q,000 have been remitted and transfer

and silver at the rate of $460,00U per day.

WHAT RAKEY TEACHES HIS IN TUcaiKu
The Chritiian Inquirer awards to Mr ilaroy
the credit of being more than a tamer of
hoiia. He is a philanthropist and a philoso
pher, and leaches men suggestive lessons
This new application of the Karey theory is
thus set forth:
Hfle is ft humanitarian reformer; and many
of the ideas which, in plain and forcible lan-
utters with the hearty eloquence of
earnestness and sincerity, are capable of a
large, round-about application to men as well
as horses. His method of educating Cruiser
would be equally good for Master Tommy ; and
the reformer who seeks to hurl the evils of the
world overboard, might take a useful lesson
from his ‘masterly inactivity,’ and readiness
to allow the horse to take time to think, exam
ine, and make up his mind.
“Some of his sentences are maxims of
wisdom:
‘“Nature never lies.’
“ ‘The horse is honest. ’
“ ‘The mind of a horse governs a horse, as
the mind of a man governs a man. If you
wish, therefore, to get control of the horse's
body, first learn to direct hiß mind.’
41 ‘The gentle touch is more powerful than
blows.*
“‘Women are better drivers than men, be
cause they have a gentler touch.'
“ ‘Firmness and kindness are all the magic
there is in my method.’
‘“Fear or anger in the mind of his driver
Is instantly known to the horse.’
The &ct is, that, without knowing it, Mr.
• genius—a great diseoverer. His
way of obtaining control and guidance of the
horse-force of the world according to normal
principles, is as good a dlscovory in that sphere
as the invention of methods to control and
apply steam, fire, water, gas, electricity, in
natural mechanics. He W UI rank her ' ftfter

The Territorial Question.
The Wuhington correspondent of the Phil.
follu wing torse and
sensible view of tbe territorial question. He
says Political affairs here look still H lmost
as complicated aapossi bl«. One partv desires
to break up the Union because they profess to
want to protect siavery in the Territories,
though they know It never will go there; and
another opposes the concessions demanded by
the present exigencies, because they desire to
exolude slavery in the Territories, though ihey
also know that slavery will never go there _
Climate and soil have settled that question for
ever. ' Though they have been open to the
ingress of slave property; though New Mex
ico has even passed a law protecting slavery
within its borders, yet there are only twenty
Foußalavea at present in all tbe Territories,
which are large enough to form twenty-four
States, or onJy one negro for each district
large enough to form a great State 1 The
question now to be decided by the people is :
Shall this glorious nation, tbe most prosperous
and powerful on earth, perish ou account of an
abstract and impractical question ? Will the
citizens of the United States, while the sun of
political and material happiness and blessed*
nessisshining upon them in unparalleled splen
dor, permit our Government, which is the
freest the world ever saw, and a holy inherit
tance from our forefathers, to be destroyed,
and civil war to be brought upon thirty mil.
Hops of people t 3?or, Jissolve. the Union, and
peace and prosperity will be annihilated j /Can
