THE COUNTY CONVENTION.
Un Sat•urday of this week. the .
the primary meetings of the
party, will be held to select a
County Convention, to assenthie at the (_:,,to
house on Wednesday. In a p,,lit:cal point
of view this Convention will be a uto,t im
portant one. The chief duty which it ha,
to perform is to select seven delegates to
represent the county in the State Conven
tion, which is to be held at Reading, on the
29th of February. This Convention will
have the power to express the preference ,
of the Democracy of Pennsylvania in regard
to the selection of a Presidential camlidate
in 1860.
The Democracy of Allegheny county have
a deep interest in this question. It lie
that their influence can decide the political
complexion of the state next year. Let,
then, th 2 Democratic voters of every dis
trict in the county take a personal interest
in this matter, and see to it that men tire
sent to the County Convention who will
fairly represent their wishes on the great po-
questions of the day.
; The nomination of a candidate for (lover
nor, is a most important question to th•'
Democracy of Pennsylvania at the pm=ent
crisis. We must have the best ni* to
tound in our party to lead us in the contest
of lstitt. It is for the people thimselves to
indicate, through their delegates what tnan
n•r of man they desire.

THE LAWRENCE CALAMITI.
All the terrible accident.' by ficod, tire and
railroads,pale before the terrible catastrophe
at Lawrence. ,It was a perfect
human life. Thus far the investigations of
the Coronor tend to throw the blame upon the
contractor who built the mills. The newspa

lamity given by those who escaped. and thril
ling inciden's reemded by cyo-witnesse , = to the
heart-rending scene.

KENTUCKY STATE CONVENTION
The Democratic State Conventi ,, n
met last week, adopted a platform of princi
i!es on the slavery question, hostile to popu
lar sovereignty, and in favor of Congrassio;•
al intervention. No candidate W runs for
the Presidency on meh a platform could be
gin to carry a single free State. In the North
we look upon the doctrine ofCnnngressional
intervention ae an out and out plank in the
Republican platform. The Cifolnuati plat.
form—the doctrine that the people of each
State and territory should manage their own
aflairs in their own way—is the binnuid national
ground upon which then battle must be fought.
MR. DOUGLAS IN THE SOUTH,.
Among the Democracy of the '-outh, the
opincon is rapidly gaining ground, that, with
Mr.*Douglas as the standard-bearer of the...na
tional party of the country, their success will
be more certain than with any other man.—
He has the strength and the talent to talce the
party through the coming contest victoriouo.
A perceptible change in his favor is perceived
in all quarters, and the recent unqualitiel7l
or
pressions of theDemocrticy of Ohio. Indiana
and Illinois in his favor will fuld to the num
ber of his friends everywhere.
Comedians in a Tragical Condition
Mr. and Mrs. W J. Florence had a narrow
escape from drowning. last week, at Louis
ville, Kentucky. They wore visiting at the
estate of a friend, ani went upon a pond to
state, with a party of ladies and gentlemen.
Mrs. Florenc,!skated into an air -hole, and Mr.
F. and another gentleman broke through 11,e
ice in attempting her rescue. An alarm wits
given, and a negro belonging to the family
was chiefly instrumental in saving the trio,
who.were threatened with a cold and wet
grave. Mrs. F. came nearest a fatal issue. but
was restored by the kind attentions of her
friends. The adventure might answer fur the
foundation of a play, in which an Irishman,
a Yankee girl and a negro may figure.

Revolatiinary , Soldiers.
There are now about two.huncired and seven
revolutionary soldiers living, whose names are
on the pnsion list. They have all sunk to
their graves but this sriiall band.' In a yeti
few years, not a human being who participated
in too war of 1776 will be left standing lin
the shore of time.
To BE worthy of office now-a-days, 063
must be entirely unworthy of anything
else.
