TIRE UNION CANNOT BE SUSTAINED BY FORCE. This Union cannot be held together by force. No drop of blood must be shed in the effort to keep the Northern and South ern sections of these States under one gov ernment. There can be nothing clearer than these propositions, and all thoughtful men are settled in the belief that if disunion must come, it mint be peaceful, and, to some extent, deliberate. In any partnership or association, the con sent of associates is essential to the contin uance of the compact, and each partner has a sovereign control over his own property. As well might the stockholders in a bank declare that the voice of the majority of the corporators should be taken as the rule for the administration of the private and do- mestic affairs of each, in his own proper domicile or office, as the majority of these States, claim the right to control the inter nal policy of the whole. Let us look at this matter a moment. The Southern States declare they are tired of the Union—that they have not equality of rights within it. What then? Shall we organize an army in the North to compel them to remain in the confederacy.? Shall we make them eleet, members of Congress at the point, of the bayonet Shall we drive their members, so chosen to Washington" Shall we surround the capital with hmilita ry force, and compel them to deliberate and pass laws for the Union? Every one must see how absurd and impossible this would be. But again. Suppose the North shall or ganize an army to prevent a severance of the Union. Will it bemarched to the South to make anti-slavery proselytes? They will go there uptight white people, of course. Will the enlightened and humane abolition legions seek to exterminate the white race in the South so that slavery shall exist there no mere? Will they, after destroying the whites in the South, give their lands and tenements, (mayhap their women, also,) to the beloved negroes, and setthem up as free and independent sovereigns? If any ono says that these questions look to extreme and odious results, let him say what else would be the consequence of the use of force to keep this Union together. . For it is clear the South will not seek us at our !lorries to make war upon us. No South ern tolitician has laid down any law for our local government,-- - - , none of them have un dertaken to tell us bow we shall treat any portion of, our poPulation, therefore. they will not come to the North with a pros. elyting army, for the Southern people have not presumed to tell us how to manage our in ternal concerns. The whole trouble, as we take it, comes from the fact that we are de termined to manage theirs and our own also. It is a most humiliating thing for the North, that the sentiments of true patriotism and love of the Union should have become so weak in the hearts of the people that public men are permitted to declare, in the Halls of Congress, that they will preserve the Union 'by force of arms" in case the South should attempt to leave it. Such an idea is monstrous. The compact which binds these States together, was formed for mutual in terests and the preservation of equal rights. It can be maintained only by the force of patriotism, and not of arms•and bloodshed. If the fratarnal feelitag betlyeftq l the States is destroyed by Norther aggressions, the strong bond of union is already broken.— There is no power on earth which can mend the links once severed, and least of all, the bloody force of a Sectional war - If the South _resolves to leave the Union, she because ttel North ;denies her rights which were granted her when the ori- ginalsarmact was entered into. It is not competent for such a partnership to be en forced beyond the articles of agreement upon which it wai originally baied. If the Abolitionists of the North prove strong enough .to sever the Union, the South will leave it peacefully; iluietly anti- like men, knowing their rights, and determined a every hazard -topp,t i t peyond the power of might to trample upon right. Ogden, Esq., of Chicago, (who is also one of the directors of the railroad,) is to belhe Receiver. This appointment will undoubtedly prove as acceptable to the friends of the road in the west, .as it is to contracting parties. It is understood that the Superintendency of the road has been tendered to a railroad official of great expe rience, and favorably known to the public, ,who has long been intimately connected in .the management, and who is, personally, largely interested in the success of the road. i The appointee has risst 'et accepted, and it would not be proper to indicate the individ ual at present, more particularly. Thus it will be seen that this importp,,nt work will retain a strong and efficient management, and while the interests of the finances . of the road have been promoted, the require ments of the public generally, who are more directly interested in the prompt and safe transmission of freight and passengers, will be , amply. provided for. We congratulate the gentlemen of the Board of Directors, and the committee of the bondholders, upon the liberal and enlarged policy which has characterized and governed their iinieiisaingii, which will largely redound to thear'erddit, and which augurs favorably for tb fu' ire prosperity of the railroad and .alt i interes The Newark Advertiser Bays : "An inter esting decision was made by Justice Sanford, this morning, in a civil snit. The information we have heretofore given the public, relative to the recent adjustment of the ditricultit of the above named road, are so freely and clearly stated in the fur tad States GlL:di,: of the sth. t hat we transfer the.s awe to our columns. There is now every prospect that this great enterprise, which has struggled through so many ditb ciflties to its final completion to Chicago, will soon bo extricated from the control of the Courts, by a compromise among creel i torn, as suggested in the plan recently published by Mr. Thomson. The meeting of the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne and Chicago Railroad. with the committee of bondhold ers, which commenced on WethiLtsilay of the 2 4 eith ult., at the La Pierre House, in this city, closed its labors on Monday night of this week. The conclusion was satisfactory to all the parties concerned. and may be con sidered as a final adjustment of the matters which were the issue between the bondhold ers and the directors, and which either oc casioned or were the result of the late ac tion of tha bondholders, and appointment of a receiver at Cleveland, Ohio. The agreement is matured and concluded be tween the parties, aided on both sides with able legal counsel, but awaits the formal ex amination and approval of the counsellor in Cincinnati, who conducted the proceedings in that city in behalf of the bondholders, and who was not present in this city du ring__ the conference. We understand that the provisions of this adjustment are highly honorable to all parties concerned ; that provision has been made for the payment of the recent and future running expenses of the road—for the payment, ofthe debts for which bonds of the road have been hypothecated, and for the payment of debts for which individ uals have been and are endorsers, and are personally liable. This relieves the road 'from risk of loss by sacrifice of its hypothe cated,, securities. The adjustment is such that it also protects the unsecured creditors and the stockholders from any sacrifice of their claims, leaving the road to develope its resaurces, discharge its obligations to creditors, and reimburse those who have in vested their capital in its stocks, without the fear of having its franchises wrested from them by the action of mortgage bond. holders, Haibanda Mast Pay their WiveN Board. He was in the French war previohe to the Revolution; also in the Revolutionary war, end sided with the Americans. He was a great alit to Washing ton, acting in the capacity of a runner and bearer of despatches. His family have now in their possession a silver medal that was pre. rented him by Gen. EDITOR:—It was risked by one, of ancient ticrw, •• which is the most perfect pop ular government The answer. known to all, is undisputed and if there is any one thing, more than any. other, which would ena ble us to realize the bright ideal of the Ancient Philosopher, it is that which would mast pro mote the settlement of the whole country by the owners of their firesides. This policy is now adopted by the leaders of all toolitleal partim , but the sagacious statesman, whose eloquence twice carried the measure through the lower House of Congress, then stood far In advance of public opinion Now, however. when Democrats are casting around for a candidate for the highest post in the Commonwealth, they seize upon such men. It is right. Pennsylvania should have no see ond•rato steersman at the helm. Second only in wealth and importance, and destined soon to be the Empire State, it is highly proper to look for her Governor among those of the most enlarged expehence and eminent ability. And among them, no ono would more certainly load the Democratic cOlunin to triumphant victory, than the great defender of the Homestead. His name would create an enthusiasm among the people that would ensure a triumph unequaled in Pennsylvania since the days of Jackson. Yours, HOMESTEAD. Another Dead Sea. A writer in the Unloki(Cal.) Donee:rat gives a very interesting description of Mono Lake, which has recently engrossed pub lic• attention, from the fact of the discovery of deposits of gold in the neighborhood. He says: Mono Lake is more literally a "dead sea" than the sea of Sodom. According to Dr. Clark, that "sea swarms with fishes, and shells abound on its shores." MOIIO Lake has neither. The extreme length and breadth of the Dead Sea, accordingto Merl ti, are 75 by 16 miles, giving a superficial area of 600 square miles; whereas Mono Lake contains 675 square miles. The river Jordan and Arnon, and the brook of Ke dron, besides many rivulets empty into the Dead Sea, Into Mono Lake, McLane's river falls from the north, and Crosby's river from the south, and three large brooks or creeks fall into it from the west, besides numerous rivulets and springs all around its borders. But; this lake not only responds to the Greek epithet 17307103, as being "a lone, soli tary, deserted, forsaken," bdt it also answers to the same actirctive as explained in the Spanish as being "pretty, nice, neat," The lake takes as many shapes al the points ,differ from which you view it. From the west side, about ten miles from its nor thern limit, it appears like a beautiful cres cent, its horns curving delicately around you on the right and left. From the north it appears to be nearly circular like the full moon, the islands in its waters strikingly representing the sgpts on that planet. , From the east it app'ears to have no particu lar shape, but it stretches off irregularly among the mountains. There is little or no echo around this lake, and indeed it is difficult to understand a person talking at a- little distance. A dreamy, spnl-like spirit seems to pervade the atmosphere'. The smooth, glassy sur face of the waters, the upheaved, disrupted, volcanic mountains surrounding the lake, looking down, as it were, into this abyss of their ejection ;'` the illusion of vision, and the whitened shores, thickly columned in many places with vesicular lava which looks - like monuments erected to the "mighty dead," all conspire to impress the mind with the idea of a fictitious scene, portrayed by the pencil of an omnipotent hand. Virginia Lands. Gov. Wise, in his address to the Southern medical students at Richmond, said: "I have been signing patents for the last three months for the county of Ritchie, lands which contain unlimited quantities of the best gas-genarating coal in the world, and if you ask who own them, you will find that they are chiefly in the hands of Northern men, Or at /east will be be fore twelve months. They buy land at two cents an acre, and one peck of the Ritchie coal will thus purchase a whole sere of land. I would possess ourselves of these sources of wealth.'.
