Resolved, That the course of General Simon Cameron
in the United &ace Renate, meets the decided approba
tion of this Oonventien-that is him we recognize, the
true friend of American industry.
Bedifeed, That we present him as a conservative and
proper eandtdate for the Presidency, and the delegates

NO tit* support
Tire introduction of these resolutions was a
' 'signal for battle, and had about the same effect
as the throwing of a lighted torch among a
.ems` quantity of combustible matter. We fear we
tumnot describe the scone. Mr. Brown arose
Afnin' virtuously indignant., and moved that the Imo.

introduced and referred.
Bir. Powell, of issntucky, introduced:a-ilia
to abolish the franking piivilege; "Reforolt`to
committee on Postotilce and Postwads.
Mr. Chandler, of Miehigan, introduced a
'bill making appropriations for the impente-

grant.
Mr. Johnson, of Arkansas; opposed dialref -
crones to the committee on public landie. It
did not belong 'there, and to was opposed to
taking business from one committee and giving
it to another. A desttltory debate-ensued, in
which Mr. Benjamin, of Louisiana, stated that
he had no objection to its reference to the',-com
mittee on private lend claims. The charges
iqtainst him vete too absurd to give 'him a
moment's coneern;but 'labia motives were im
pugned, he thought, it better that tbe-petition
should go to the judiciary committee. Funny,
on motion of Mr. Toom* the petition' was re
ferred to a select committee of five.
Mr. Hemphill' presented the credentials of
Lewis T Wingfall as . baited States flanator
from Texas. Mr. Wingfall was dulyn3worn
and took his seat.
Without anything further of moms' t the
Senate adjourned.
Roust. Mr. Washburn°, of qiinois,
called attention to a letter ho had ri&ceived
from a contractor at Rockville, Tll4pis, in
which the writer says that the state things
which exists, owineto the, failure afAngrees
to pay the mail contractors, cannotpe im

especially those dopenalint 'ou the mails. The
writer says he cannot get grain M. his hor
ses, &c.
Mr. Washburn° wilted to say to the con
tractors that he 414 nest Fonsider himself re•
sponsibie for their.distress.
Mr. Barksdale, of . Miss.; remarked that Mr.
Houston, the other day, proposed a resolution
for a temporary orginfization, t y which the
post oflice appropriation bill could be passed,
and this proposition received no favor from
Mr. Waskburne and his friends.
Mr. Washburn washed his hands of all re
sponsibility. No Speaker bad boon made on

Mr. Houston saidthitshow*lthe insincerity
of Washburne and his friends. He treated
Washburne's proposition with the scorn and
contempt it deserved. The gentleman intended
to defeat the object, and for him to read that
letter was adding insult to injury.
Mr. Washburn—The gentleman proposed
to elect a temporary Speaker, and left a blank
in the resolution for the insertion of a name.
Why did he not accept that of Mr. Sherman?
Mr. Houston--Why would not the gentle
man accept the name of Bocock or Millson.
Ho said if the House would agree to the reso-
luLlon he would propose to till the blank with
some individual whose name had not been
connected with the contest, and against whom
there could have been 110 serious objection.
He wanted to act in good faith.
Stevens, of Pensylvania, asked Mr. Houston
whether, at the same time, he wanted to elect
a clerk.
Houston replied that was not necessary.—
The present clerk acts until his successor is
elected. The gentlemen do not mean to pay
the contractors, they want to keep up they out
side pressure.
r.Btevens—The gentleman must know that
by the Constitution no bill can be presented
nor resolution offered till speaker and clerk
aro elected. The gentleman cannot escape in
that way. It was a mere subterfuge that the
present clerk can remain till his successor is
elected.
Much interlocutory debate and excitement,
mainly between Cox, of Ohio and the South
Americans, ten of whom replied tartly to Cox.
Much confusion ; after . which a ,ballot was
taken. Sheri:Min orretthulred and ohe thiee
short of an election. All others 106; no
change- anticipated: The lines of the four
parties in tbe House are drawn tighter than ever
The House . then adjourned.

An attempt., it is understood, will 1;41 made to

The navy department have received des

The war department is in receipt of

The British bondholders are indignant at
the consummation of the treaty.
Degallado, Gomez, Torries and others had
arrived at Vera Cruz from Tampico, and are
loud in their demands for material aid from the
United States.
There is no doubt that Minister McLane has
been instructed to use his efforts with the con
stitutional government of Mexico to obtain for
the Louisiana Company modifications of its
contract for the construction of a railroad over
the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
Messrs. Benjamin and Lascere certainly
contemplate a visit to Vera Cruz, in the event
of the ratification of the treaty, to further the
interests of the government.
MT. HOLLY, N. Y., January 4.—Peter
Lynch, convicted of the murder of Geor•. , -
Coulter, was sentenced yesterday afternoon *. '
be executed on the 23d of next March. '1 his i:
the first capital case in this county since 43„
murder of Mrs. Hamilton by (hough, many
years since. Lynch has been endeavoring to
produce the impression that he is insane, bat
the opinion is settled that he quarreled
ffi ,
and then brutally murdered his victhii, e
circumstances of the case, which were close 4
y
connected and clearly brought out in the evi
dence, tending irresistibly to this conclusion.
Etis conduct upon the trial, and during his speech
before sentence was passed, dissipated the sym
pathy which his case had excited. '\ 'Under the
law of this State the execution will be private
and within the prison walls.
LALSTON, Pe., January 4.—The Argus is out
to-day strongly in favor of Hopewell .Hep
burn for Governor. The editor says it is better
to heal up difference, to allay discoid and
unite the party than to distract it.. This is the
true wisdom that should rule in the next Con
vention Old politicians that have been
for years in harness should be unhitched.
None of them can carry the vote that Mr. Hep
burn is sure to receive. The Democrats from
the different quarters of the State shouldthink
of these things. The Convention should act
upon it. We must have anew man of Hep
.
burns stamp, or success is doubting.
