From the following correspondence it will
be seen that Mr. Dean, who proposed running
as a volunteer candidate for Alderman in the
Third ward, hat Wftlidkawn from the contest.
We hope Mr. Taggart may follow his ezam

Prrrenuiton, December 27th, 1859.
Dear Sir—Although I am not a citizen of
the Third : ward, and consequently have not,
strictly speaking, a right to interfere in any of
the local questions relating to that district.; yet
• L'n• a Democrat, and sincerely attached to
the principles of that party, and desirous to
promote its organization and the harmony
which should mark our political conduct,—l
cannot be a mute observer of the unfortunate
position of affairs in your ward.
Depend upon it that the success of our prin
ciples rests upon the good feeling and harmony
of the members of the party, and in undeviat

Let me therefore beg of you, to bury all
feelings of bitterness and resentment, and to
proclaim yourself openly and sincerely, a
friend to Mr Mcßride, and of your entire
ticket.
If you do so, you will act in an honorable
manner, and will teceive the applause of all
the good and true men belonging to the De
mocracy of this City.
Another important consideration is, that the
division of our ranks in the gallant Third
ward, may affect injuriously the election of
the nominee, this day selected, for the May

With feelings of the midst respectful kind,
and fi i• king you to excuse the liberty I thus
take, I am, dear sir,
MR. PETER DI.AN
Dear Sir:—l have received your note of the
27th inst., and admitting the propriety of your
friendly interference in regard to the position
of the Democracy of the third ward, I have
this to say upon full consideration in reply
thereto: That I do hereby publicly withdraw
my name as a candidate for the Alderrnanship
of this ward, in order that the minds of my
frienes may be disabused upun the subject.
And further, let me assure you and all my
friends that as a citizen sincerely attached to
the organization of the Democratic party, and
anxious for the Woe's of its principles. I am a
full believer in the doctrine that we should
gather around the standard of our party, at
the risk of all persoral considerations.
Thanking my numerous friends for their
warm and generous support of myself in the

felt gratitude as long as 1 hie, 1 declare that

HOCILICZTYR. December 29.--A large Union

was addressed by James Brooks and„liii-Giiii

rather a Mixed character, but the principal one
is the following •
Resolved, That we cannot too strondy

views of public policy with which thooinori

for a dissolution of the Union. We, on the
contrary, hold such sentiments to bekilsorga

Sr. Loins, December 29.—The Missouri
Democrat has the following despatch from
Warsaw, Missouri: About eleven o'clock on
Monday night the citizens of Bolivar were
aroused by shooting and throwing of stones
on the public square. A large crowd soon
congregated, when it was found that some ne
groes had attacked a few white men. When •
sisfilcdent number of whites had, collected to
gether, they attacked the negroes, driving them
into the woods. The negroes threatened to
burn the town before:morning. Vigilant watch
was kept, however, and their attempts foiled.
One negro was dangerously wounded by a
pistol shot. Several were captured and con
fined in jail. The citizens called a meeting
and appointed a vigilaie committee, who
were taking active measures to discover those
engaged In the riot. A monnted company are
pow scouring the woods. An owner of several
rebellious slaves was wounded, and only saved
himself by flight. Several blacks have been
severely punished. (:treat excitement prevails,
and every man is armed and prepared for a
more serious attack. At latest advicea, how
ever, the excitementhad somewhat abated.
WA9IIINOTON CI ty, December 29.—The
names of the six opposition members who,
to day, voted with the majority of the Demo
crats for Scott., for Speaker, are as follows :
Messrs. Booteler, Bonligny, Hardman, Vance,
Moore, of Tennessee, and Maynard.
Mr. Branch will, if he has not already, pri
vately demand of Mr. Grow, in the usual man
ner, an explanation of the language applied to
him to-day, in the House of Representatives.
It is probable, however, that by the interven
tion of friends, the cause of offence on each
side will be removed without resorting to ex
treme measures.
Chief Justice Taney and Associate Justice
Daniel are itill detained from the Supreme
Court bt , Sickness The Court of Claims has
been adjourned till next week, owing to the
sickness of Judges Blackr9ore and Scarboro.
PHILADELPHIA, December 29.—The Com
mittee of Bondholder' and Board of Directors
of the Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad, af
ter a very harmonious session, have agreed
upon W. B. Ogden, of Chicago, as Receiver.
J. K. Edgerton, Receiver, appointed by the
Ohio Courts, has resigned.
NEw ORLEANS, December 29.—The steams
