It gives us unqualitied pleasure to say that
the art exhibition now open has. in the ten

been admitted, met with the most gratifying
t'si. The rece4ts thus far have nearly
/ea, lied the amount of the original exp••nditure,

glad of this, because, 115 it is not the object of
the projectors of the exhibition to make mo
ney out of it, it will perhaps be the means of
keeping it open longer than was at first con
tern plated.
Many of our citizens visit the gallery daily, and
in the evening the hall is always well filled .
The opening of this collection has shown that
we have amongst us more lovers of art than
was supposed, and it is hoped that this enter.
prise may have the effect of converting some
of these into its most liberal pair - DT's, as well as
of inculeating a taste for the beautiful in art
The collection is, as we have said, highly

Pane - BARKER'', CHEMICAL. LECTI:HEs
The twelfth aid last of the course of lectures
on Chemistry, which has. during the last six
weeks, been going on at University Hail, was
delivered, on Tuesday evening, by Prof. Geo
F. Barker, of Boston, the intelligent gentleman
who has so woll entertained th 0.4 4, attending
the course. The subject was Electricity, and
was illustrated by a series of entertaining ex
periments, calling into requisition a galvanic
battery, constructed for him by Messrs. Park,
McCurdy & Cu., since his arrival here, under
his personal supervision. It consists of a hun
dred cups, and is the largest west of New York
city, and of great power.

PITTSBURGH MARKETS
WEEKLY REVIEW.
Carefully Revised and Corrected by our own
Commercial Reporter
Prreseueea, December 28, 1869
The intervention of Christmas at the close of the
week. had a depressing effect on the wholesale trade;
hut the business of the week was a lair average.
Navigation has not improved since our last. as the
running of ice, and the partial closing of the river in
tirfered ,i,inewhat with the running of boats ; and the
freight business by river has consequently been small.
Flour hail advanced a trifle during the week. but the
other change; are alight. Groceries c3utmue firm,
wail a small advance in sugar.
Te treiney market contuutes moderately easy.—
There la a growing increase of diecountai while in the
iiiroulauon and deposit lines there is little
change.
The following cornparattve statement is made up from
the otheuil statements of the condition of the city banks
tor the week ending on Monday last, and for those of
the week previous
