RUNAWAYS. —The sound of sleigh-bells seems to set horses at their wits end, for scarcely an hour of the day passes in which we du not hear of some runaway horse and sleigh. We have heard of no serious injuries to any one until yesterday, when, soon after dinner, a horse with a sleigh attached, came dashing down Wylie street to Fifth, and along that street. Mts. Scully, an old lady of Birmingham, was standing on the corner of Fifth and Smithfield, against whom he ran, knocking her down and fracturing her shoulder blade. She was taken into Murphy's hat store, whence she was con , veyed, to her residence during the afternoon. ' lief ibjurius are severe, but not dangerous. Mr. Bonham said that the act of 1820, w hich characterized the slave trade its piracy, war blot on the statute book, and ought to be ex purged, but he knew no party in the South in favor of having the law of I a 1 4.1 repealed With regard to the latter, he was not prepared to say that it is trm.mstitutional. There is nu considerable part of the South, or the Demo cratic party, ~who agitated the miestt..n of re opening the trade, which call never be done in the confederacy. As to is holier he was in favor of imening the trade at •14111' loture time, he was nut prepared to say. Mr. Farnsworth—Does the gentleman en. urge the sentiment in the book -Black Dia mond,- for the renewal of the sl.oe trade by law'? Mr. Bonham—lt is impracticable; I do not stand in the attitude of one who endorsed the violation of any existing law. Mr. Farnsworth asked Mr. M . Hea whether he endorsed the sentiment? Mr. M'Hea, as an individual, was in favor of re opening the trade, but this was not posi tive that the Democratic party in Mississippi or any other Southern State rndorscd it. He was, however, for the faithful execution of the laws as they stand against the re-opening of that traffic. Mr. Farnsworth did not think that such a design could be fixed on the National Democ. racy, any more than that it could be justly charged that Republicans endorsed the acts of John Brown. Mr. M'Rea believed that he was the only member of the Democratic party from Missis sippi who entertained that opinion. Mr. Farnsworth asked Mr Crawford wheth er he endorsed the re-opening of the slave trade as repdmmendeddn Black 4iiitmond. Mr. Crawford replied that he had nevur read that book. Mr. Laman said that he had always been opposed to re-opening the African slave trade, He was in the Senate when Mr. Seward an nounced the doctrine, which had such a start ling effect on the South, tnat as soon as this administration shall pass away, the abolition ists would get control to overthrow Southern institutions and remodel the Supreme Court, so that its decisions should be against the terests of the South. Mr. Seward said that tit' expected - 4a his life-time there would not be the foot of a Single slave on the continent, and while he uttered this as his deliberate opinion, his form dilated and his pale face was expres sive of bad, malignant passion, and his eyes glotml i as i f the fire of hell was burning in his Mr. Farnsworth, earnestly---God grant that letixA .rosy=see shads." when the foot of a slave will not rest on the conlPeoLo4- 4 , ••• • Mr. Bonham--You'll never see it. Mr. Farnsworth said that be would not be afraid. It was the wish of Washington. It was the doctrine of men who made the repub lic, and the men who will continue the repub lic's existence. This did not endorse the raid of John Brown. As to the fugitive slave law, be and his people would not pursue the fleeing negro. They would leave that dirty work for the Democrats. Ile asked whether any South . - ern gentleman was willing to turn out and chase a fugitive slave? He understood that in that part of Illinois called Egypt people catch black men, and, instead of advertising them as runaways, advt-rtiselfor their masters. Mr. Logan, who repreuted Egypt, said that any imputation that his constituents vio lated the law, was false. It was right that ~ : tich runaways should be arrested. Mr. Farnsworth explained, a ing that he spoke for a large number of ItoMicans; not one of them will stop an inch out of the way in pursuit ,if man, woman or child, for the pur pose of capturing thorn, and restoring them to slavery, hut in saying this he did not say they would plaice thernselv 'h in reiataniuo to the fu witivc VW.
