TSB URGII POST
National Conventions.
The Charleston Convention—for the nomi
nation of candidates for President and Vico
Presideid—will be the eighth National Demo
cratic Assembly which has convened for that
purpose under the present. organization. The
first Democratic National Convention was
held tit; Baltimore, in 1832, and nominated
General Jackson for re-election as President,
arid Martin an Buren for Vice President.
The State of - Pennsylvania did not., however,
abide by the decision of the Convention on
the Vice Presidency, but threw away her vote
for William Wilkins. The next Democratic
National Convention was hold at Baltimore,
in DeceMber, 1835, and selected Martin Van
Buren for Pr_.,ident, and Richard M. John
son of Kentucky, for Vico President. In
May, 1840, the third Convention was held.
Ms. Van Buren was nominated for re-election;
but no selection for Vice President was made.
The Democrats all voted for R. M. Johnson,
except Virginia, which cast, her electoral vote
for Wm. Smith. In May 1844, the fourth
convention was held, and chose James K, Polk
for President, and George M. Dallas for Vice
President. The fifth Convention convened at
Baltimore in May, 1848, and designated Gen
eral Cass for President, and William O. Butler,
of Kentucky, for Vice President. The sixth
Convention was held at Baltimore in May,
1852, and nominated Franklin Pierce, of New
Hampshire, for President, and William R.
King, of Alabama, for Vice President. :The
seventh Convention met in Cincinnati on the
let of June 1856, and nominated Buchanan
and Breckinridge. Previous to the holding
of NatiOnal Conventions, the Democrats used
to nominate candidates for President and Vice
Prisident by a Congressional caucus. The
Democratic members of Congress convened
and nominated Jefferson, Madison and Mon
roe successively for President, and the people
ratified the selections. Those districts and
Stites that had no Democratic members of
Congress, of course had no voice in the nomi
nation. n 1824 the last Congressional cau
cus for' the nomination of a President was held.
By this time the sysein became unpopular.
Only sixty-one membZ. , a ‘ . of Congress met out I
of two hundred and fort3'. They selected Wil
liam H. Crawford of Giorgio, for President,
and Albert Gallatin, of Pennsylvania, for Vice
President. The great mass of Democracy,
however, supported General Jackson for Presi
dent. In 1829 he ran again, without any na
tional nomination as a candidate, and was tri•
umphantly elected.
The opposition to the Democracy never had
arty - National Convention for the nomi,.
nation of President find Vico president,
until December, 1839, when they met at
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and nomina
ted
General William fienry Harrison, of
Ohio, for President, and John Tyler, of Vir
ginia, for Vice President. Since then they
have had their conventions regularly ,every four
years. The Democratic people have agreed
with remarkable unanimity upon Stephen A.
Douglas-for President, who is the choice of
not less than 1,500,000 of the 1,800,000 men
who voted for Mr. Buchanan in 1850, the con
vention at Charleston will have an easy time
of it. The people having made the Domino•
Lion, all that the delegates will have to do will
be to give it form and expression by the pass
sago of a resolution declaring their will. The
convention is a representative body, and roust
and will' carry out the will of the people.

CLARKE'S LIVER PILLS.
The Bart Purgative and Purifier before the People.—Accept
td and‘Reeamrnendcd by Ertiinent Phyrulans.
DR. CLARKE, the inventor of these. celebrated
Pills. is justly distinguished for his eminent abilities and
scientific research. For 30 years in his extensive practice
he experimented in bringing the great desideratum of a
remedial agent to act as a direct purifier upon the hu
man system. In this he has been eminently successful,
as the numerous certificates from celebrated physicians
show. They are extremely mild in their operation, at
the slime time powerful and effective in removing dis
ease. They never glove pain, as do most purgatives, but
allay it in all cases. In acute cases they are more speedy
in their relief- than any Pill now offered.
The propnetor s pleased to announce that he has per
fected hie arrangements forsupplying the trade to the
fullest demand. N. I'. WALKER, Proprietor.
