FASHION VERSUS HEALTH.—A. writer, who
has ovidently.givon some attention to the sub
ject, and has, perhaps, been in our city dud rg
the winter season, says, first, then, 1 ate con
cerned for the little children. The air is often
dense with fog, yet so cold that when we leave
the cheerful fireside and venture out of doors
we feel as though we wore going into a well,
or, to speak more mildly, of if a wet blanket
had been wrappol around us. I look from my
window on such a raw, cold day, and i n -{h„
course of an hour I see many little children
pass it, not one in ton of whom is properl y
protected from the weather. I shudder as I
note the short cotton drawers, orlon not reach
ing the knee, worn by both ' , axes under ,ON ell
years of age, or themabout., and this stilt shatt
er petticoats, high.enough to display Um hand
some entbruidery with which tiler are dis, torat•
ed. .1,44 below this dainty frilling, often the
produce of many an hour's toil which the
mother-has gladly mid proudly devot,sl to the
adornment of her darling, and 1 sec several
'inches of blueish mottled th,sh between it and
the top of the little sock, which only just
reaches the ankle.
Dear ladies, tender mothers. espeMally you
whose position gives you power to lay down
the law in matter of dtaiss = for it is well 1, now II
that whatever example is set by -the gentle, -
"the simple" will not fail to follow—listen to
One; T. plead for your little ones, and, in no
selfish or intert,,,l spirit, beseech you to give
their frail bodies sumo more substantial and
fitting shelter from the cold. How can ymi
hear send to them out, when the pitiless east
wind is ready to flay their tender limbs, with
those poor little limbs covered" You love
'year child. young mother? Any one can see
that who witnesses the lighting up of your fees
•lirhen he lifts his rosy lips for a kiss. Yet you
who have complained of the cold day. though
the ample folds of your warm dress sweep the
path as. you walk, you, I s_ay, condemn this
tender little being to face the same degree
of cold as nearly as lossiblo unclad from the
waist downward. least h r ,..eze is at any
time sufficient to whirl aside: or raise the short
shirt.: in which you deem him dressed, and
)(aye him bail nak.d. I, who am but a look
er-on, having neither part nor lot in the mat
ter against which I protest, feel n thrill of pity
pervade my frame, and fairly long to gather
these starved youngters round my fire, to Minh ,
the little blue legs and encase them in more
comfortable garment?, which, however hormdy
in texture, would keep them warm.
FRANKLIN'S BIRT LIDA V.—As we took occa
sion to gat. R week since, the journeymen
printers of this city are engaged in making ar
rangements for the appropriate celebration of
the 17th of January, the anniversary of the
birth of Benjamin Franklin, the great promo
ter, in this country, of the ''art preservative of
all arts." It is the intention to give, on the
evening of that day, a grand banquet, to which
all in any way connected with the craft will
be invited and expected to be present. It is
expected that this will be the must interesting
event of the diameter which has transpired for
years, as nothing wilt be spared in making it
so. The matter is now in the hands of a com -
raittee of the Typographical union, 'which
comprises seventy members, and 1.1.. s a full
treasary: The committoe is composed of neon
rf*.the-right stamp, who will do all in their
Poiveir to Make the 4cascriii what 'it shMild
be. WO wish them all success lU their enter
prise, and hope every one interested will be
present.
DENIED.--The Harrisburg Pairl44 and
Paoli says, in reference to an agent of the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company, at thet city,
whtise rumored defalcation we noticed yester
day: `•John A. Cannon, for several years
the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's freight
agent at this place, has resigned that post and
gone to the West, where he intends to reside
permanently. The rumors prevalent in our
borough for the last few days, with which Mr.
C.'s name was associated, were greatly exagge
rated ; and we learn that the difficulties which
attended the settlement of his affairs with the
railroad company have been adjusted to the
i;t4israction of al-I concerned."
J AIL CoMMITMENTs.—IIugh Lafferty was,
on. Monday night, committed to jail by Esquire
Lake, of Elizabeth township, charged with
larceny on oath of A. IL Applegate.
Alderman Donaldson sent up Andrew J.
Vedder for further hearing on a charge of false
pretences preferred by Ben Trimble.
Clark Bates was committed by Mayor Mor
rison for further hearing, charged, on oath of
Wm. B. Neville, with larceny.
John Porterfield, of Elk county, was com
mitted on a proe. , A, Laving been arrested by
otheer Pattersom An indictment is pending
against hini 'our t.court • for stealing a raft,
but as the offence is an old one, it is doubtful
if it can be proven.
As Wn Eta.Errno.--The pretended discov •
ones of silver at the "Indian God," nine miles
below Franklin, turn out to be only mica, an
analysis having been made by Prof. William.,
of Allegheny College. We have, during the
past ten years, heard of many silver mines "up
the Allegheny," but they have all terminated
,this manner, and we expected no ,loss in
thiS : The legeMbiry lore , of the country
does not agree with thelhodeim developments.
FOUND MAIL—The body of an unknown
man was found lying in the mill-dam of Mr.
Hutchinson, Butler township, Butler county,
one day bast week. He Mid in his baud a pair
of steelyards, but his name or place of resi
dence could not be ascertained. Ho had most
probably fallen in and drowned.

Mr. McKee replied that the Democratic par

Mr. Clark wits glad to hoar it.

Mr. Clark replied that he would support

Mr. ACRea resumed his remarks, causing
much good humor. He was frequently inter

Without concluding, Mr. M'Rea gave way
to a motion to adjourn, which prevailed.
SBNATI:.-Mr. King, of New York - , pre

WEDNES DAY MORNING
Mr. Mason's, of Va., resolution to appoint a
committee of investigation to inquire into the
Harper's Ferry invasion, then camp up.
Mr. Clay also said he wished to know where
he stood; let there be no concealment; the
Senators on the other side propose to respect
the constitutional rights of the South, and de
clare they will preserve and maintain them.
If that declaration be sincere, and the Repub.
heart party will keep their pledge, there is no
cause fbr complaint ; but the South has reasons
to distrust proportions; when the conduct of
the opposition Senators are so different. One
Senator treats the whole matter with a levity
which would b'e offensive if ho did not always
treat every subject in the same manner, and
ho will probably die like Rabelais, with a jest
upon his lips, and never wake to the responsis
hility of life and death until ho is called to
judgment. Another ridicules the cowardice,
weakness and impotence or the South, inisuffer
ieg a handful of men to seize the arsenal at Har
per's Ferry, in the face of fifteen hundred inhab
itants. Another entertains us with newlydiscov
ered opinions of Washington, Jefferson and
other fathers and framers of the Declaration of
Independence anti the Federal Constittition,dis
appritving of shivery. Another endeavors to
excite domestic dissension and discord within
our own ranks at the South, by appealing to
the non miaveholders to C,llllO to t h e supp ort
the Republican party, profes.iing to vindicate
their rights and rescue them (rein the curse of
slavery, thus striving to pc-atter the dragon
teeth over the plains of the South, in the hope
that then will spring tip armed men. OthOr: ,
