Frrnautag, Jam TtIBSET, 111 deBClava3twtd GLOOMY FOR Itf:reiaidjiy: those most intimate with men in Washington City, that many of our oldest and most experienced statesmen, who hav'e been the most ardent defenders of the Union, -ao 7 ffiliavers its perpetuity, 'now. speak glooinity'ot tlfe e futare. The President and Mr. Cass, the latter ,of whom at the time of the, South Carolina nullification movement, ridiculed the Idea" of disunion, express fears of the result of the present fanatical move =*nis )01:" the "Aboliticin-Republican" party. From their point of observation they see-the firm spirit of -resistance to Northern aggression which is exhibited in the South. and although they do not despair, there is a feeling of gloomy doittifen.therr mindi, never found there be fore. It need not ho said that these old men have.nrolonger the hopefulness and buoyancyof youth, and that this is the natural croaking 01 old age. In mind, neither of these men are feANN ! - On other . sqbj ects they have the char acteristic hopefulness of former days, but the ele,p.lTp :from tbe patriotic spirit and love 01 the Union, which exists, is to them, as it should be all true Americans, the subject iof the most ierious consideration. They see as plain as the noon-day sun that the , success of the Republican party with it,: present doctrines cannot fail to lead to the ino,t un . brßlied'peli ti cal - licentiousness and to a firm resisanec on the part of the youth to Northeri, aggression, which, will be of such a character as , : to :shake the very foundations of our gov ernment. In a political point of view, the New Eng land states are thoroughly demoralized. The country has nothing to hope from them. But in Zi;ey , York, Pennsylvania, and the Great West ther'e is yet time for nre actionary move ment—a " eober second thought" which may avert the impending danger. The people of these' . .-States should no longer remain idle, cry ing- k /_• , • q pence, peace, when there is no peace." Every honest mart should give his aid for the preseryation of the rights of the States and continuance of the Union under the Constitu- 4..0.- 4-- THE CONNELLSVILLE RAILROAD The Journal styles the voting of the Con nelisrille Railroad stock held by the city. at the'recent election for directors, -an aboni nable outrage." The Act of Assembly au thorizing-the issuing of the Connellsville Railroad Bonds authorizes the Mayor to vote the . .itOCk. of the city. This the Mayor of the eity,Tor the time being, has always done. The . Juurna/ asserts that the City CounclL it their last meeting had resolved not to rote the stock. Even if this were the tact. no resolution of the Councils lie- vim] -force to contravene the provision= a an Act of Assembly, and the editor of the 'ad, having been a legislator one.• our ht to know - this fact. The voting of the stock of the city lire b• difference in the result of the election was the Mayor's duty, under the Act --Assembly, to vote the stock and it ..;;;fest injustice to style his act '•an !lhOralin:tl.lp ,r outrage." The game of the repudiator , i about ` , played out, The public sentiment of this , s , conimunity is assuming a more healthy tone. -=:,,,`Thisquastion must, and will be decided by the law of the land, and not by the appeals of demagogues to popular prejudices.- It will not be lortiliefore the que, tion of the liability of municipal corporations t;jr their bonds is suodp.railrotid compluiie, wil I be decided by the Silken - le Court Of the Vnited titat and by Its decision the people will abide rather than the dicta of Thomas .1 efferz,m Bighorn, and. Thomas Williams, Esquires. A NEW MOVEMENT OF RAILROAD TRAFFIC. A Buffalo correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette, states that the New York C,intral 2 Riiiiroad proposes to abolish arbitrary rates of freight on Cincinnati business, and that the New York Central, New Yurk and Erie, Buf falo and Cleveland, Cleveland and Erie, Cleve land Columbus and Cincinnati Railroadi pro pose to ticket through to Chicago and other western points via Crestline and Pitts burgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad. lie says The New York roads with the Grand Western and Lake Shore, by the opening of the Grand Trunk, are placed at the mercy of the two Michigan roads, and when the Grand XFunk which is now making extra exertions to obtain business gives those Michigan roads lower figures fur Boston goods, they as a matter iggotirse, give the Grand Trunk the prefer-ern, over the New York lines. The New York lines-therefore propose to checkmate the Mich igan roads by ticketing and sending freight via Crestline. This arrangenient will very materially injure the business of the Michigan Southern road, as that road is of a different gunge with the Cleveland and. Toledo, and of ;course will have to continue to transfer both passengers and freight at Toledo." This movement which we understand, has already commenced, will be of great ulvan tags not only to the New York shippers, but also to the interests of the Pittsburgh. Fort Wayne and Chicago Road. The distance by this route from Now York to Chicago is a few Miles less than by either of the Michigan routes, and the time can be mado twelve hours less. While the transportation thus secures a 'cheaper, quicker route, the Fort Wayne Road will increase its income, which has been grad ually augmenting for the last year and a half. T:LIC prospect of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and. Chicago Railroad were never brighter than at the present time, and if the admirable and equitable proposition suggested by Mr. Thom son for arranging its financial 'flatten., be adopted, it will soon become one of the paging railroads of the country as it certainly h. one of the most important. NUDGE DOUGLAS 'l.n the organization of the House, Judge Douglas desires all his Democratic friends, sometimes called Anti-Lecompton Democrats, to unite with the other Democrats. This is a wise and patriotic course at the present crisis. The only safety of the country lies in the un ion of the Democratic party. Mr. Douglas' present course will have the effect of bringing -back many of his former friends and admirers, who have reluctantly been estranged from him on - thn. Kansas question. Mr. Bocoek, the Democratic candidate for Speake; openly ex presses his views in favor of burying the pest, and consolidating for the future. The eulogies of Old Ih;own, by the Aboli tion preacker.s and politicians, have fairly roused up the conservative, litiion-lovitig portion of the community to the expedien cy, if not duty, of doing.c9mething to con!- : since the South that the masses of the peo: pie have nosympathy with the conspirators against their peace and safety. In Boston. Philadelphia and New York, movements of this kind have already been set on foot. Public meetings are to be held, irrespective of ,party ; and there appears to be a dispo sition on the part of the thinking 'portion of the community to show the %void(' that all are not influenced by a spirit of fanati cism. It is eminently proper that meet ing, of this kind should he held in all the principal . Northern cities and towns, in 'or der that the people of the South may un derstand what the conservative sentiment of the North really DEC. 8 DOITC LAS EN OPHId. The people of Ohio have taken the responsi bility of saying who they are for and have given their unanimous expression for Stephen A. Douglas and Popular Sovereignty. Every one of the twenty one districts of the State is reported to have elected Douglas delegates to the Charleston Convention On, the 6th of January the Stale will elect four delegates for the State at large, and will undoubtedly instruct the Ohio Delegation to vote as a unit. A Wife's Letters---Ititeresting Postal i)e- Postmaster General Ilelt has reeently deci ded an interesting and - novel question. A hus. hand who had been separated from his wife, demanded that his tillage poArnaster should deliver her letters to him, a n d threatened Is suit at la•.v if his demand was not complied with. The wife, on the other hand forbade the delivery of her letters to the husband. to these eircum4wriees the postmastei• appealed to Bolt for instruction,. That otheer pro nounces the advanced by the husband too preposterous to be seriously refuted -in deed. he says it is abhorrent to law its it is to the C.briPtian civilization of the age—and he directs the postmaster to deliver the letters to the wile. A 4 'orrespondent of the writing freroWad,ington City, says Thurls , w Weid and Mr. Greeley are here: Mr. Weed is efidentle one of the shrewdest men in the United States but Gen Simon Cameron is hard to beat. Never before havo the reepec tire claims of Pennsylvania and New or!: been so fully discussed as during the last twen four hours. Gen. Cameron will not he inter fered with, either by New York,'or Massachu setts, and least of all, by Ohio. Tie is a host by himself, and a terrible man in a deliberative assembly. It is iron against yarn, steal against ..Ndico. The attitude of the South is calm end dignified. The Southern men look as if they had resol , ed to take their stand, and that filets, riot words. must now decide the contest. IT is well known thatfirst'elass Dentistry has been beyond the reach of the masa of Teeple on account of its nostlinesa, and the majority, rather than take up with the inferior workmanahip of "cheap Dentists," have ailopted the wiser.course - and done without any, for it a- set of teeth be imperfect in _work manship axid inexact in fit, it is worse than useless and dear at any price. THE CORALITE AND PORCELAINTEETIThaie in augurated anew ere In the science of 4eiatierri—being the very Lest Irti6eial Teeth now in use, they can be afforded at prices that place them. within the reach of all. Being the first to introduce these new styles =of work to this community, I accordingly fixed stich prices as I deemed would remunerate the best artistic and 'me chanical skill. Since then, lowever, the unprecedented favor with which the work has been received, has com pelled other Dentists to adopt it, some of whom wish to retain the old gold plate prices, which I consider would be exorbitan4 for, though the new stylesi are really more valuable than the best gold work, the; are rondo of less expensive material. The increased amount of work done also compensates forthe reduction in Price On the other band, a few Detital.QuackS of this city, who possess neither mechanical skill or common hon esty, advertise the work at prices slightly less than my own. notwithstanding they have neither the ability nor the right tit being patented) to manufacture it. The -.object of this trickery is merely to obtain an opportu nity to disparage the Coralite and Porcelain and recom mend some of their own worthless work. - I have felt bound, injustice to myself and the public, to make known these facts.
