MONDAY MORNING: HARD TIMES. People are continually grumbling. is there a man or a woman in this sublunary sphere who is contented? If there is, liar num ought to secure that individual.— .Everybody wants more money than he Las got, and everybody thinks he can make it if he only, has a chance. Here in Ameriea peo plejumpleadleng into all sorts of specula tionslO"make money " no matter how un reasonable they may. be. young men make haste to-" go into business " before they have ' by patient labor acquired a proper knowl edge of business or accumulated a dollar of capital, and away they rush. They " handle money" for a time and labor under a delu sion Aiff they have made it. With a, big sign indifienty of customers they branch out" beyond their means and sooner or later ninety-nine out or a hundred are bankrupt. With high hopeS expeCtations men go. into business, and when they see that they have over=reached themselves they make a great display to, keep up appearan ces until final ruin comes. They dazzle the world with their extravagances to conceal the rotten condition of their finances. It ia'eitravagance and false ideas of honor and position in society which makes so many complaints of bard times in this country. People spend more than they earn " to keep up appearances." To. be considered fasll - and " ariatocratic " debts must be made and remain unpaid. Friends sutler and tradesmen are 'victimized. Society is in a wrong condition. It is a false demand that men. must ruin themselves to keep up appearances. People should learn to live within their incomes if they wish to get . rid of hard times. The payment of debts - promptly should be looked upon as a . rmoral dtity. Our churches should teach the doctrine that repudiation of debts is much akin to robbery. If these things can be done, we shall at once have a remedy for hard - times, and a. sound practical recipe for promoting: human happiness. Every one should be content to live upon his income. Long :credits should be avoided, and short. credits, too, - except in cases of ab , olute cesaity. Superfluities and luxuries should 1,0 purchased for cash only. If this is dom. there will be less discussion about •' credit " and "currency," and less talk about " hard times." THE ORGANIZATION OF CONCRESN Toi;day Congress meets, and so closely are the parties balanced, that a lively contest is looked for- in completing the organization We learn from a special despatch to the New York Times, that a Democratic caucus held in Washington City on Thursday night, after careful calculation, arrived at the following suit for the iirst ballot for speaker: Depubli - cans 114, including Hickman, of Pennsylva nia ; Americans, 22; Democrats, fis ; scatter ing, 3. Tho Democrats are sanguine that the Repablicitns cannot increase the vote, while they count on the coalition of the Americans. Humphrey Marehallisactive in preventing the Americans from voting the Republican ticket- Ho says he knows but one enemy, and that, is the Republican party. By the night's telegraph n:e shall havis eor taints not - guesses or calctilstions. NULLIFICATION AC AIN. The country may well be startled by the re solutlOna adopted by the Legislature of Sduth Carolina, expmsing the willingness and even anxiety of the State to unite with other dare- State, in forming a Southern eon °le - racyotrid in taking such wise precautions . 1.• will enable her and her sister States to resent any sudden invasions or encroachment= from the Nerth. It is greatly to be regretted that any - portion of the people of the North should adopt4aentiments and favor political action of such a character as tends to destroy th., influ ence of the people of any portion - of the Unimi in their patriotism and love of the great bond • of nrilarii which binds the Stattis together.
