Pittsburgh and Connellsville Railroad Com pany:in 1847, which was rejected by the Court (principally on the ground of the sub scription having been made in 1853, and - other. matter which operated as lin estoppel} consisted of the same legal oh jections which had been raised before the Cir cuit Court in the eases of Oelricks et. al. vs. the City of Pittsburgh, and sundry cases against the Commissioners of Lawrence, Butler and Washington counties, tried at a preceding term,, and which had in those cases been over ruled by the Court, and the rulings already had, being denied by Judge Grier as conclusive of this ca.se. The Judge charged the Jury, that, notwithstanding the various points, some twenty in number, tvhich had been raised by the defendants, that the plaintiff's were entitled 'to recover. Exceptions having been taken to the ruling.of the Court, the Jury, under the charge, found a general verdict in favor or the plaintiffs for $7,525 50,' being the amount clainied, with interest on the coupons from the time they fell due to the time of this rendition of-the ,verdict. The defendants took excep tion to the charge and suggested their inten tion to remove the ease to the Supreme Court of the United States in time to have it argued at its gext term. t:r tqt- ST. ANDEEIV'S DAr.-.-Yesterday, the 00th of November, being St. Andrew's day, was celebra ted by service in the Episcopalian churchesin the city. SL Andrew is the patron saint of aiot land, and the anniversary of his birth has been familiarly known in this country as " pan cake day" and celebrated by the Scotch, though no particular observance of the day is followed in, the mother country. St. Andrew was one of the Apostles, supposed to have been martyred in the year fip, in Greece, upon a cross in the ferrnof the letter X, which is still recognized ar:St- AnclreW's cross, A supposed relic of this cross, carried to Brti t sels, caused its figure to be adopted as a badge for the Knights of the Gulden Fleece. Some relics of the Apostle himself are said to'have been carried by a Greek devotee, named St. Regulus, to Scotland, where they were deposited in a church built atm place which subsequently became distinguished by the name of St. Andrew's", which place became the seat of the Scottish primacy ; and from this , carre, - problibly, it was that St. Andreiv was in tithe considered as the patron saint of Scotland. ere is &legend connected with this day, to t . e effect that maidens, on the eve of it, sought to learn what sort of husbands they were to have, by praying - in these terms :—" Oh' St. Andrew, cause that I obtain a good, pious hus band; to-night show me the fig:ire of the man who will take me to wife." It is difficult to say if the compassionate bowels of the saint were ever moved so far as to grant the maidens importunate wishes. Societies bearing the name of St. Andrew in America, are associations of Seotchmen, or tho_d of Scottish descent, for a benevolent purpose—that of assisting or giving pecuniary relief to such of.their brethren as t . be, society may deem proper objects of it. .. p• r. o --, The arris.utg ''i'e/eY7a;;/isof Monday announces the death of this gentleman, long known throughout.th . e state as a successful contrac tor, as follows : This morning, between one and two o'clock, Mr. John 0.
