"Praise the Lord upon the harp; sing to the harp with
a sang of thanksgiving."
"Let us come before Isis presence with ihanksgiritiii,
and show ourselves glad with Him in psalms."
This, as is generally known, is the day set
apart, according to custom, by the Governor,
to be observed as a day of thanksgiving for
the blessings which we enjoy, az individuals,
and as a community. It behooves us to accord
to the festival an appropriate observance, as it
is eminently proper that we should.
r Although some of us may have " private
gliefir yet as members of this great Com
monwealth—the Keystone of the Federal
Arch. we hare much reason to express our
gratitudeAo Him who rules above, for manifold
blessings trimly good things for which to
thank the Giver of all.
- • .
iKe•. r eannot. assert that our Stele has been
favorettl,44 year, with unexampled or even
anusitalprosperitv, yet we have no occasion to
murmur.' In- the early part of the year it was
feared that-,6 - 4r props were blighted and des
troyed, and fore time lamentations long and
load were heard, but au all-seeing and benefi
cent Providenceseemed to hear them; and when
the husbandman gathered in his grain he found
not only an abundance, but in many sections,
a isuperduity, almost. What was lacking in
some localities, was supplied in others, and so
the product of the. State was equalized. We
should, therefore, thank the Creator for this
great blessing thank Him that we have_
enough for our wants, and that there is no
famine in the land.
It was Also predicted, early in the year, that
another financial crisis, which would br3 more
disastrous in its effects than the last, ass
pending, but this, too, has proved groundless.
The year is nearly gone, and we have not vet
felt the threatened blow. For this, then, we
owe Him gratitude, which we should make
manifest.
Out commepcial interests have not suffered
'Attring the year, and though our merchants
have been obliged to exercise all their prudence
and economy, yet they have gleaned a fair
bar Vest, and suffered few losses. And for this
it is-our duty to return thanks.
Another blessing we have enjoyed in a high
degree is that of health, for while no epiderpie
of any character has aisited us, our bills of
mortality show that our community has been
but lightly afflicted with the ordinary " ills
which flesh is heir to." And this should com
mie/id our lasting gratitude.
We'have many other blessings, of which we
should manifest our appreciation--our exemp
:Pop from accidents by flood and fire—oar com
parative freedom from the fears occasioned by
the brand of the incendiary, the knife of the
murderer, and the midnight depredations of
thieves and marauders—from riot, rapine and
bloodshed, and many.minor evils incident to a
lapge city.
For all; these things it is our bounden duty to
return heartfelt thanks, and in this view this
Festival was wisely ordained. Cmtom has
made the day one of rest—one of feasting,
pot fasting. To-day each family will gather
round the table at home and partake of the
„local things of this life, while some will spend
the time in relaxation and recreation. The
churches will belopen, and "the congregations
will sin. , ' praises unto the-Lord." All will ob
serve the occasion in the way which to them
seems proper, and we trust that no violence
maT • rearits propriety:
While we. are enjoying -ourselves, and 'lsing
ifig'prideris to the Most High" for the mercies
accorded to us,- we should also devote a passing
thought to those who are not so highly favor
ed—the suffering poor of our city—for there
are many in our midst who feel the pangs of
hunger and the piercing winds of winter, from
an insufficiency of fobd, fuel and clothing. It
should comprise a part of the observance of
this day for all who are able to give something
out of their abundance to the relief of such as
need it. This we should include among our
duties, and we will find an abundant reward, as
Holy Wilt tells us that that giveth to the
poor, lendeth to the Lord."
Again: me Tsay, dei:trie day be properly ob
served, and let all be thankful for the good
things we baize:and pray for what they expect
in the future.

•• Mrs. Walter's long engagement at the Walnut has
been one of the most bri bout histrionic triumphs that
has been witnessed in this city. Her impersonation of
Geraldine is, without a dissenting voice, acknowledged
to be a did' d'aetivre, and if anything were wanting to
show that the versitality of her genius is as great as it
is perfect in the highest creations of dramatic art it may
be found in her performance of the part of Meg Mernl
lies. in the play of "Guy Manuering." All who have
read the beautiful story, by Scott,. in which this old
Gipsey witch is so forcibly drawn, will acknowledge the
faithfulness of Mrs. Waller's portray,. Thc contrast
between this diaracter and that, of the noblerninded
Geraldine, is so strong that it is scarcely possible for
the spectator to realize that it is the same person that
represents them. The actress isventirely lost. and the
illusion is roost perfect. The reputation of Mrs. Waller

TROOPS AT HAItPER'S FERRY
Gov. Packer Offers 10,000 Pennsylva
nia Troops to Guard the Dividing
Line.
CHARLF.STOIVI;, November 21—Governor
Wire left Harper's Ferry this morning for
Richmond, after receiving a despatch from
Governor. Packer, of Pennsylvania, tendering
him the service of ten thousand men, and of
fering to station a guard along the dividing
line between .Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Governor wise returned thanks for the offer,
with the assurance that Virginia was able to
protect her honor. After the departure of
Governor Wise, Col.' Elliott addressed the
military, telling them that it was poisible that
they might have to undergo arduous and peril-
OW duty, and he felt satisfied that if the vene
rated Commonwealth should be invaded, they
would effectually wipe out the stain.
Last night at nine o'clock an alarm was
'given by ono of the sentinels firing his rifle.
The military orders wore immediately, sounded
i.orn one end of the town to the other, and
r io panic among the women and children, and
mse of the men, whose nervous systems have
- 3come much disordered by the late.events,
.as very great. Shutters were closed and
ghts extinguished in quick time. The ex
.. stement continued until ten o'clock, when it
was ascertained that the sentinelled mistaken
a cow for a man—that she would na halt
when he commanded, and he fired. Another
alarm at three o'clock this morning was occa
sioned by the report of three guns. A senti
nel came rushing in and reported having killed
three• men, who, instead of halting, fired at
him. Scouts were sent out, but no men could
be found, and the town was in an uproar for
the balance of the night. The fact is, that the
soldiers regard their present occupation as a
frolic, and it is believed that some of them
under the influence of whisky were playing
pranks on their comrades. All has been quiet
to-day.
aLFLPEIt'S FERRY, November 23.—Major
General Taliaferro arrived on the express last
evening,, and assumed, by the direction of
Governor Wise, the command of .1l the forces.
General Taliaferro does not supercede Colonel
Davie, but was entitled, by rank, to tho com
mand of the whole forces. Colonel Davis has
been disfranchised under the anti-duelling act
from holding an ofl3ce, civil or military-, in
Virginia. Ho has acted here as an advising
officer.
Rumor was afloat here to-day that there was
a party of marauders in tho mountains Dear
Cherry Ran.
The sentinel., at Charlestown are reported to
have been tired on last night.
Gov. Wise exhibits no sort of feat of a res
cue, but thinks it best to have a good force out.
In reply to gentlemen who asked him this
morning if he bad any fears, he replied he
never bad the least, but considers it the finest
opportunity ever offered, to put the State in
military training. I can now teach my boys
to carry buiscuit In their knapsacks, and to ar
range bullets in their cartridge boxes.

Minister to Spain, Mr. Preston, is expected
home by the next steamer. The President
has given him leave of absence for six months.
There is such information in Washington as
warrants the belief that all the differences be
'tween the United States and Great Britain,
growing out of the Clayton-Bulwer treaty will
soon be adjusted, through the agency of Mr.
Wyke, the English Minister to Central Amer
ica. A part of the arrangement was the recent

Death of an Editor
NASHVILLE, November 23.—Mr. Eastman,
senior editor of the Cnion and American, died
this morning, of apoplexy.
THE_ success attending the use of Dr. J.
Hostetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters evinces at once
its virtues in all cases of debility and diseases of the
stomach. Certificates, almost without number, have
boon published, attesting its almost miracelous power
in removing those painful and fearful diseases And at
this time it seems idle to do more than call attention to
the great remedy of the ago, in order to awaken public
attention to its excellence. It is the only preparation
of the kind that is reliable in all cases, and it is therefore
worthy of the consideration of the afflicted. The Bit
ters are pleasant to the taste, agreeable in their effects,
and altogether valuable as a tonic or remedy for Indi
gestion.
