A Heroic Fireman
The Johnstown Echo, referring to the late
heroic act of conductor McCoy, in rescuing a
child whose destruction seemed ineyitahle, re
lates the following of Mr. Wike, a citizen of
Wilmore, Cambria county :
"Some years ago, in the palmy days of the
Allegheny, Portage . Railroad, we,,get on the
engine of a freight train at Wilmer° to ride
to the head of plane No.l. On the way down,
a short distance below the 'Half Way House,
no
tv Surnmerhill, n Small child was soon sit
ting directly on the rail of the track on which
we were running. We saw, the child, and the
sight caused-the blood to tingle in our VeiDA.
In an instant - the engineer whistled down
brakes and reversed the engine, but the head-
Way of the heavy train could not be suddenly
checked, and wo were rushing fast towards the
unconscious child. While we felt that the
death of the child, was inevitable, the fireman
cautiously descended the step of the engine,
and springing off ran'with the fleetness of a
deer. Never shall wo forget the awful sus
pense of those few moments. With what
breathless, terrible fear and solicitude did km
watch the flight of the lircnian. He gained
sufficiently on the engine to reach the child just
as it was about to be crushed into s. shapeless
mass. The scene was thrilling indeed. The
lives of both _were in peril. As quick as
lightning he seized the child, and the moment
he did so the. birreper (fOr at that time there
were no row-catchers) struck his shoulder and
sent him whirling, but soon gaining his (spin
•hr stood proudly erect with the child
safe in his stalwart arms. At that moment with
what joy and admiration did wu gaze on tho
