and Beaver County Bond Cases.
-In the United States Circuit Court, on Thurs
daY, Judge Grier delivered opinions in the
cases of Wood and Adams against Lawrence"
county, and Woodhilt against lleaVer county,
suits on railroad coupons, tried. in that court in
May last.
It will be remembered that the verdict in the
Law rence county case was a special one, leaving
resertti.points' for tho decision of the Court.
The Court decided that according to the von-
Aitions of thespecial verdict, the plaintiff wits

hrid ti 'Ordered. The paragraph in the verdict
on which this decision is based was as fol

“The jury find that the bonds were disposed

the Act of Assembly of the 9th of July, 1553,

In the case of Nlalwell Woodhill against
Beaver icounty, the. Court affirmed the verdict
of the jury, which was for the plaintiffs in the

Coutmits declared an. The points in this case
were substantially the same as in the Lawrence
county case. • -
Both' cases will probably be carried to the
Supreme Court.

A Heroic Fireman
The Johnstown Echo, referring to the late
heroic act of conductor McCoy, in rescuing a
child whose destruction seemed ineyitahle, re
lates the following of Mr. Wike, a citizen of
Wilmore, Cambria county :
"Some years ago, in the palmy days of the
Allegheny, Portage . Railroad, we,,get on the
engine of a freight train at Wilmer° to ride
to the head of plane No.l. On the way down,
a short distance below the 'Half Way House,

ting directly on the rail of the track on which
we were running. We saw, the child, and the
sight caused-the blood to tingle in our VeiDA.
In an instant - the engineer whistled down
brakes and reversed the engine, but the head-

Southern mail furnishes the Now Orleans
Picayune of the 12th inst., from which the fol
lowing items of news are obtained: The gale
on the, gulf lasted ten days.
Elpre Gresso says two conductas of specie,
amounting to three millions of dollars, had
left San Louis for the Rio Grande,: and they
were feared to be in danger from the maraud
ing parties. Robles has lost ground with the
church party, who suspected him of the inters=
Lion of playing false. •
It was added in a postscript to a letter to
the Picayune, from Vera Cruz, that Doblado
had just entered Guanajuato with seven thous
and men.
It was officially announced this morning,
that tobacco and corn are excluded from the
list of free imports at the Canary Islands.
Both articles are still subject to heavy duties.
ASIIINOTON CITY, November 17.—A ru
mor was circulated here today that Brown's
`rescue was attempted, hut it fell still-born.—
The Richmond Dispatch states that the Edward
Matlitt, who was arrested at Lynchburg as a
suspected participant in Brown's. foray, has
been dismissed for want of evidence. The
identifying parties have proceeded to Wythe
ville for the purpose of examining another sus
pected fugitive. Several suspected persons,
mostly Northern peddlerA, have reeently'been
arrested at Culpepper Court-house, and it ale
pears to be the intention of the authorities to
place in confinement all who cannot give a
good ticomint of themselves.
